Space is at a premium in the cemetery and for the most part, plots are leased for periods of 10, 30 and 50 years. In recent years, the only people who seem to be able to get permanent “forever” plots are famous people – artists, authors, and so on. Families often bury multiple family members under the same headstone and add pieces to show the identity of the recently added family members.

When a lease is up and not renewed, the remains of the individuals buried there are recovered and placed in a container with a name plate in the ossuary. The gravesite is then reclaimed and recycled to be leased out to someone else. The combination of multiple-use graves, recycling gravesites and other options like a lawn designated for the spreading of ashes means that the cemetery is home to the remains of well over a million people and it is still in use today.
