I read about all the famous graves at Pere Lachaise in different online posts about what to do in Paris. I tried to book a walking tour, but it wasn’t really happening – the online price said 22 euro but when I went to check out it was over $280 so THAT wasn’t happening. I tried to find some kind of map online to figure it out myself but just kept coming back to these different tour links that all came back to that same place. Frustrating. I read online that you should NOT hire a random guide in the cemetery – clearly a trap for the unsuspecting. I went to the cemetery mid-morning on a Monday and inside the gate was a map with a QR code that didn’t work. There was nothing else to indicate how to find anything. I wandered aimlessly for about 40 minutes and then an older man with long curls and a bald head, wearing a raincoat and carrying an umbrella started talking to me about the cemetery. He asked me which graves I thought I particularly wanted to see and then we walked, sometimes almost running, all over, in between graves, around crypts and up and down. He was full of information about the history of the cemetery, the people buried there, the regulations around who could be buried and for how long and some of the stories around the more famous graves. I didn’t see everything I had hoped to see, but I saw most of it and a lot that I didn’t know about in the first place. He was funny, personable and after about an hour and a half we parted ways and I paid him 40 euro and felt I got the best tour possible and worth every penny because I had my own personal “guide” and a tailor-made tour.
