Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Good morning, ladies. It's been quiet here, you must all be busy! I've got lots of desk work and chores so just popping in to say hi hi quickly. I'm hoping to scrap a bit this afternoon. Hope you all have a great day.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Lynnie, big squishy hugs.

The squishier the better!

Lynnie, what lovely heartfelt thoughts you have shared.
Not sure who said this but..... " It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all"

The words I often use in sympathy cards: Memories keep those we love close forever...

I love that! I need to remember it.

Lynnie - you are so wise. Big hugs to you today.

Not wise, but experienced, sadly. Lots of loss means you have to find your way through or be miserable. I had to make a choice, that's for sure!

It has been quiet.

I have had so many projects I don't know if I am coming or going.

I am working on our annual calendars right now. I scrap the top part, so it is loads of fun.

I am going to start on a family heritage album. I am really excited and some friends have shared some wonderful examples of interesting things to scrap for the albums. Things like the history of an occupation - like "Cordwainer," which is a shoemaker who makes from fresh shoe leather vs a cobbler who cobbles together shoes out of old leather. I have multiple ancestors who were cordwainers. Scrapping about a common ancestral town and what it was like when your ancestors lived there. Scrapping a page of all the people who had a common family name. Scrapping about an event that affected your family (like an earthquake or flood). IN my case it was a shipwreck. The ship was carrying a lot of whisky and the locals carted it off before the customs men arrived to confiscate it. My Great Uncle Jack buried it on the farm and always had a nice glass available when needed. Anyway, I have loads and loads to scrap about, so I need to get started.

I am taking a genealogy class tomorrow night. I have always been really interested, and am quite good at it, but have had no formal training. I need to learn things that will help me bypass places where I am just blocked. How do you decide which William Henry Morrison is your ancestor!!

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

QUESTION!

I need your input

Do you prefer this as one big thread, or would you prefer to break it into a new thread each month.

REASONS TO BREAK INTO MONTHLY THREAD

  • Newcomers would feel more welcome
  • Some folks find the size of the thread overwhelming

REASONS TO KEEP AS ANNUAL THREAD

  • We tend to lose people when we begin a new monthly thread
  • People answer the wrong thread and we end up with multiple active threads

The question was raised recently and I am happy either way. I did have it as a monthly thread for a while, but changed to an annual thread for the reasons above. However, the reasons for having a monthly thread are really valid and I would not want people to not join in because the thread is big and insular.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Hi Susan, I watch Hallmark Christmas movies too! Or did you say Lifetime? Either way, those movies are addictive! We'll probably start watching them next week or so, because Christmas, hello! :D

I like both channels, but I think Lifetime's Movies are actually better - not as campy.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

I can't even imagine! Hugs and love!

Today would have been my son, David's, 45th Birthday. He died 3 years ago at the beginning of this month and left behind a son, who is now 23. I was looking for some pictures for my calendar and found a folder of pictures I don't remember taking that were the last pictures of my kids together before he died. They were wonderful, what a beautiful gift to find. I finally added his date of death to my family tree. Somehow doing that makes it terribly real. I am so glad I had him in my life.

C.S. Lewis grieves Joy's passing and says, "Why love if losing hurts so much? I have no answers any more. Only the life I have lived. Twice in that life I've been given the choice: as a boy and as a man. The boy chose safety, the man chooses suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal. (from the movie Shadowlands)

This was one of the things that really made me think about if it was worth having him in my life, only to miss him so much now. The answer is a whole-hearted and enthusiastic "YES!" Do I wish he was still here? Absolutely. Do I wish Chris was still here? Absolutely. BUT, if I have a choice between never having had them in my life and knowing only blissful joy or having them with the sadness and wounds that are left behind, I would choose having them every single time.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Good morning, ladies. I vote for annual thread. I just click on the latest page of the thread and can easily keep up with it. But either way, it's not a big deal so....whatever :) I'm good with any decision.

I was out in the garden for 30 min snapping pics of the birds in the morning frost. It's so much fun to sit quietly, listen and watch (and snap pics of course) and I'm getting to know the different bird calls and am learning that most announce their arrival with a call. I heard the hummingbird call before he got to our yard and snapped a few pics of him in the tree.

Lots of desk work, CT work and puttering around the house. Tomorrow afternoon we leave for our trailer in the US to close it down for the winter. I should have internet for Fri and then will turn everything off Sat or Sun morning before we head home again. It's going to be cold and raining, not looking forward to it, but it needs to be done before temps get too cold and freeze the lines which causes big problems.

Lynnie - your ideas for a heritage album sound really interesting.

I'm getting out of here and back to work for a bit. Have a great day, everyone.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

I had my Bible study last night, which was great and have a Heritage (Genealogy class) tonight. Then tomorrow I rest. I really need some downtime. It is all fun stuff, I am not complaining, but I need a rest from having fun, if you can understand that.

I am so incredibly addicted to genealogy puzzles. I pick and twist knots until they come apart, or I acknowledge that I have to admire the knot and move on :) I saw someone with an 80,000 person tree on ancestry the other day - he called it his 'forest!'

I seriously need to get some scrapping done and posted. I am scrapping, but haven't really had time to post in between everything else.

I love my life!

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

At first I missed the monthly threads, but I think I like the annual one better. It hasn't gotten too big, I think.

I've had a pretty quiet week so far, except for yesterday when I took H to get their braces off and to their therapy appointment. It seems I hardly get to drive these days, LOL!

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

I like the annual thread.

Today was busy busy running around.
My son had a dentist appointment for two fillings on opposite sides. His anxiety is very high, it’s always tough to get done.
He did wonderfully but was very worried about where an hour of his time went while being unaware under nitrous gas.

since his mouth was fully frozen and he was missing school anyway, I took him for a haircut. For him just adding insult to injury. He is not happy with me.

I then went and met Nancy (physioscrapper) for a drink and visit in the afternoon.

Stopped at the pet pet store and bought the bunny some food to try. He has been on a eating strike. We recently had our normal supplier switch types and he won’t eat the new kind. We are trying another. Wish us luck.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Hello all, sorry for the MIA...so busy these and just couldn't find time to post. I like the annual thread but will go with the majority as well.

Well what have I been up to...looking after Mom, she is doing better and is coming for dinner tomorrow night, celebrated by youngest son's 30th birthday, Oct 30. Attended a 3 day weekend crop with my dil and her mom and sister...so much fun! I do paper crafting as well and I was happy about the amount of cards I was able to do. Currently I am working on a card project , learning new techniques with coloring and shading and it will be off in the mail today for a card exchange. My grand daughter was chosen with the choir at school to sing with the Winnipeg Orchestra, what a treat that was for her and for all of us. Also working on some sewing projects for Christmas gifts. Along with working full time, I am in need of a break so today hubby & I are eye-glass shopping and out for lunch.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Funny story - after saying I don't watch Christmas movies before Thanksgiving, I came home to watch husband Rand watching one. He is a sucker for them, which is so funny to me. His favourite movie in the world is the Devil Wears Prada. He just makes me laugh, he is so unexpected.

I wish I could recognize birds and bird calls, I am hopeless. They need to sit still for an hour while I browse through a book before I can find them.

I got another link to amazing albums. I am so pleased. I have loads of ideas now. I would like to get them printed before Christmas, if I am lucky.

I envy you your quiet weeks. But I think I inflict my chaos on myself, so there is no excuse.

I am SO pleased to see you back :) I have missed you! Glad to know all is well. It sounds as though you are a little overwhelmed with activities and projects. Prayers all goes well and you get everything done nice and smoothly with loads of fun!!

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

I like the idea of monthly threads and have each month locked once a new one starts.
But now I know the trick of clicking on seeing current posts since last visit I can handle the annual better.

So Lynnie... you are the host for this so I am happy with whatever you decide.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

@lynnie our bunny ate it!!! So relieved.

thinking about going to the festival of trees this weekend.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Good morning ladies. We are at our trailer for the wkend to close it down for the winter. Have spent the morning snuggled on the couch and reading. I’ve decided I’m going to try making bird suet cakes as it should be cheaper than buying them. Our birds go thru a few a day and it’s getting expensive. With all the feeders and stuff we put out for the birds, it must be like a luxury hotel for them lol.

We’re heading into town for some Xmas shopping in a bit, then hubs will drive back later as I’ll stay in town and my daughter will meet me for some more shopping. I’m sure I’ll be exhausted by tonight. If we get back early enough we’ll watch a movie before bed.

ill be back to read thru personals later or tomorrow as I’m on my iPad which takes me. A lot. Longer to type on. It keeps auto correcting and grammar correcting which can be useful but also so time consuming. Bfn

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Lynnie, What a wonderful idea for gifting. We always set a price and we have a family gift app we use, Giftster. Our gifts choices are always practical or things we need. We don't do sibling gifts anymore, just for Mom, I usually do a take her out gift unless she reallly needs anything. This way I can spend time with her, just the two of us and she likes our time together. I have a cricut to but would love a heat press to do family t-shirts...maybe next year. Hope all your gifts work out and everyone I am sure they will love them.

Rae, We do some bird feeding too in our yard. For years it was just crows that had taken over the neighborhood but we had a few owls move in the nieghborhood and we are seeing a lot of woodpeckers and some smaller birds that I haven't seen before. They are so tiny, I am not sure if they are finches? Your oasis sounds wonderful!

Sherri, were you able to do the festival of trees? Was it wonderful? I am hoping to do the Christmas Parade of Lights that is set up here every year. We haven't been for a couple of years but we always enjoy it. Having a hard time to find things to do with my 9 yo grandie. Usually every year we do the Santa thing but last year that gig was up so I took her to see the "Nutcracker" and she loved it but I don't want to do the same this year. Any suggestions?

I am kicking my Christams into high gear on December 4th when my favorite singer is in town for a new Christmas show, Mr Johnny Reid. I think Sherri knows him too...hehe! My longtime friend is joining me again this year, I go ther hooked last year! Johnny is a wonderful singer, performer and an even more a wonderful person. I am eagerly waiting for him and his wonderful band to entertain us and... we have meet & greets too!

Happy Thangsgiving to all my "US" friends...take care everyone!

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

@Route66 have fun with my Johnny, I’m not going to get to see him this time round. So sad. He is a fantastic performer.

@lynnie Alexis and I did make it to the festival of trees this year. It was very nice. Sign of the economic downturn in Alberta though when such a wonderful charity scaled back so much.

Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day. Then today that cold strong wind blowing again. The constant change in barometer is playing havoc with my pain.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Good morning, ladies. Tired and sore today. Had a busy wkend of cleaning up and closing down our trailer in WA for the winter and out shopping for hours on Saturday for Xmas gifts (managed to get quite a few) and did a lot of grocery shopping (especially Trader Joes) as I like to stock up for the winter months since we don't start going back until at least April (aside from driving down for a few hrs to pay our maintenance dues after Xmas). TJ has a cauli rice frozen mix that I love and cleaned them out, grabbing all the bags they had out (about 12). Love that stuff. I also love TJ organic popcorn and baked cheesies. I don't often eat much carby type snacks but these are my go-to when I do.

Back is a bit stuff today from all the lifting and carrying over the wkend but not too bad. Just feeling like I don't want to do much today aside from work and taking Taz out. I do need to get my car over to the shop later today or tomorrow when there is an opening b/c my back brakes started grinding on Saturday so that'll have to be replaced ASAP. Ugh...just what I wanted, another big expense just before Xmas. It's really hitting us hard this year, we've got 5 big bills to pay out this month so money is definitely going to be tight for awhile. Such is life....there's always something isn't there?

Karen - I'm not sure what our itty bitty birds are...maybe finches. They come in groups of 15-30 together, never alone. They are so cute...so tiny. They swarm the suet together and then they all take off together. I just call them my "itty bitty birds" when talking about them LOL. I'm terrible at identifying birds. I have learned a couple though that we get....pileated woodpeckers (huge birds), small woodpeckers, towhees, finches, chickadees, thrushes, bluejays. That is so cool about getting owls. I really would love to photograph them. I never see any around our area, but hopefully some day I'll finally get some pics. I saw one at a park last yr but he was too high in the tree and it was too dark to get any photos.

Hope you all are well, had a great wkend and have a good day today. I'm getting to work now. BFN

Happy Thanksgiving to all my "US" friends...take care everyone!

I could see the Nutcracker every year and never get tired. I like to see the Dance School nutcrackers, though, they are the most fun, and way cheaper. Towns usually have a Christmas Tree lighting that is fun, too. Find somewhere that has a carol singing, or maybe even go out singing Christmas carols. We would do that some years and stop by all the friends we have neglected, knock on their door and sing Christmas carols. It was lovely. We often picked up a few extra voices.

The gig was never up in my family with Santa. Even when the kids became aware that, perhaps, Santa wasn't quite what they thought, we still pretended with winks. Ask me if Father Christmas exists, I dare you!

We use Elfster, which is just like Giftster. I sometimes pick stuff from there.

I always get my brother a present, but it is usually made because he doesn't really want anything. I did find a second hand copy of a really cool book on the Beatles that is not in his HUGE collection. He will love that. His girlfriend is the same way about presents. Plus she is quite well off, and doesn't need anything. She loves her dogs though, so I think I am going to do something really awesome with her dog pictures this year. She has a great digital frame that my brother gave her a few years back and that has pictures of her dogs, several of whom have since died. She has four now, all rescue, and last time I went up I took dozens of pictures. I think I will give her a new set of pictures on a little scan disk. I can include all the old ones, because I took those too!

Mum is hardest. It is hard to get her out and about now and she doesn't really want anything.

I just had the best new idea for a gift. My friend was talking about all those pictures we used to get of the kids in school picture packets and was wondering what do do with all the extras. I suggested attaching them to playing cards so you can play the memory game where you turn over cards to find matching ones. How fun would that be for old pictures in general where you have duplicates and they won't be used or stuck in a scrapbook! I was so excited with the idea. I might do this for some of the little kids.

I also thought of Christmas ornaments of the favourites, that would be fun, or a collage of them from young to old. Use them on birthday cards for the kids - there are dozens of uses for duplicate pictures or pictures that won't get used otherwise.

My youngest son, Steven and his wife are holding Thanksgiving this year. It has always been our tradition that we put our family pictures (including grandparents, great grandparents and great-great grandparents, as far back as we can). We introduce our kids to the family history this way. As an early Christmas present, I have collected pictures from Nessa's family and growing up and will print those out tonight so, as they take on the tradition, her family is included. They will not be attending Thanksgiving, but it is a wonderful tradition and it gives us a chance to learn the names of her mother's siblings (there are twelve, including her mum , each having spouse, children and some grandchildren) and her father's siblings (there are nine including her father!) I can never get them all straight.

Plus I am working on a family tree album for her!

And a family tree for my kids - whew, I am exhausted!

@Route66 have fun with my Johnny, I’m not going to get to see him this time round. So sad. He is a fantastic performer.

I am glad you got to the festival of trees. It sounds wonderful. Many charities are feeling the downturn. Sometimes it is even that the newer generation is very focused on more political causes and the old charities are feeling the pinch. I see it often here, too.

Those nitpicky things like car brakes do get in the way of using your money for fun things! My daughter was complaining that 'adulting is all about money!'

I would love to be able to identify birds. We have so many different varieties where I live, but I have no clue what they are.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

I had planned this whole weekend for the luxury of doing NOTHING except scrap and a few projects I am working on. Of course, life got in the way.

Friday I did pretty well, working on the family calendar and the family tree. I was adding loads of pictures to the family tree on ancestry, which was loads of fun. I got the calendar finished and the proof uploaded to the printing company. I felt very accomplished. Around eleven, my daughter-in-law texts to ask if I would come over the next day to help Steven with Bruce because he was really fussy. Steven could manage just fine, in reality, but neither of them had much sleep, so she thought it might help. She works Saturday and Sunday. So, I spend all day Saturday until pretty late helping with Bruce. It was wonderful one on one time with Bruce and Steven. I also had some excellent DIL time when Nessa got home. I feel very blessed by both of them. BUT, it did mean I was busy all day Saturday.

Not only that, but I had mentioned to Steven that I wanted to add Nessa's family to the tree. He brought out a book that her aunt has made of the mum's side. It has all twelve of the siblings, parents and grandparents. In addition it has all the sibling's spouses, children (and spouses, if any) and grandchildren. All had birth and marriage dates. There were a couple of death dates, too. I entered it into my family tree. It was exhausting. When Nessa got home, I added the names of all her father's siblings (there are 9 total in the family), parents and grandparents. I did not add their wives, children, or any dates, because I don't have that - YET! But I'm working on it. It is also my first experience sourcing records in Mexico. What fun! I don't even read the language. Nessa was pleased.

When I got home I checked email and I had the proof back on the calendar. I had miscalculated the print area, so there was a lot of work fixing that. I started, but did not get done.

After church on Sunday I changed BACK into my jammies and settled down to fix the calendar. Then daughter Karen called to say that she was really sick. She left middle of the week to fly up North to spend time with friends. She was way too sick to fly back. She had terrible vertigo and all kinds of other unpleasant symptoms. I said I would drive up to get her (about a 7 hour drive each way.) Fortunately her friend said he would meet me part way. SO, I spend Sunday driving up the five freeway across miles of boring flat land to get my little girl. She was very grateful. It was four hours each way, plus a very short break when I picked her up. I dropped her off at her place (she lives with her Steven and Nessa) and then headed home (about another 45 minutes). I was SO glad to get home. I did change into my jammies again then. I finished up the changes to the calendar and submitted the new proof and got to bed by midnight.

I have been tired all day today at work. I wonder why.

The new proof looks awesome. I think I have already told all this in a prior post, but that is ok :)

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

I finally got my family tree pages posted:

Parsonage-Family-Tree.jpg
Parsonage---Descendents-of-Catherine-and-Alfred-William-Parsonage.jpg
Parsonage---Descendents-of-James-Alfred-and-Esther-Parsonage.jpg

Parsonage---Descendents-of-Edward-Ogden-and-Hannah-Collins.jpg
Ogden-sisters-and-husbands.jpg
1967-40th-Wedding-Anniversary-Page-1.jpg

The first three are my dad's family tree. The woman in top center is my great, great grandmother and her children. The one on top right is my paternal great grandmother and great grandfather and their children, one of whom is my grandfather. Bottom left is my paternal great grandmother and her six daughters, one of whom is my grandmother. The center picture is my grandmother and her sisters along with their husbands. They were incredibly close. The last one is my dad's parents renewing their vows for their 40th wedding anniversary. It is so strange that I am coming up on my 40th next year.

I am so pleased with these pages. I am debating the background colours. I really do like the green ones and might stick with that. The lower right is more modern so it is probably okay. I think I will also work on the greenery so they does not look so similar on the family sheets. Once I have a pattern, I will be able to turn them out at a quicker rate.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Sad thing, I spent several hours last night fixing place names in my family tree on my local computer. When I sent to sync with Ancestry.com it crashed and it made a bit of a mess. I had to restore the tree to before place name fixes and start fresh. I was not pleased with myself for not backing up right before the sync.

It was not major - just work. I had reduce my place names by about 250, by standardizing them, a bit of an OCD thing, I think. I am trying to make up my mind if I should standardize by the city, county and country (they are all England) and put the addresses in the details, or if it is beneficial to keep the address in the location. I can't make up my mind.

I need to take a genealogy course to answer the best practices for things like this.

:)

Those are exquisite!!!!

I finally got my family tree pages posted:

The first three are my dad's family tree. The woman in top center is my great, great grandmother and her children. The one on top right is my paternal great grandmother and great grandfather and their children, one of whom is my grandfather. Bottom left is my paternal great grandmother and her six daughters, one of whom is my grandmother. The center picture is my grandmother and her sisters along with their husbands. They were incredibly close. The last one is my dad's parents renewing their vows for their 40th wedding anniversary. It is so strange that I am coming up on my 40th next year.

Re: Thread: Everyday Chatting & Waffling {2019} Let's get to know each other!

Good morning, ladies. Spent a bit of time in the garden, photographing the birds and squirrels. Now I'm doing my desk work until the shop calls this afternoon with my brakes fixed and they'll check the electronic locks which have been acting up and I'll walk over to pick it up. Should be about a 20 minute walk although I never walk on our main roads here, only drive so I'm guessing LOL. Will get a bit of scrapping done this afternoon and still need to figure out what's for dinner tonight.

Lynnie - the pages look great. What a good mom you are to drive all that way on Sunday. Yes, no wonder you were tired yesterday.

Hope everyone has a great day, I'm getting back to work. BFN

Lynnie, your pages are wonderful...I adore all the photos you have of past generations.

Wow! Love those!! Are they templates? I want to do something similar for each of the book I do for my grandkids. Kind of, where you came from, type of thing.

Hi Heidi,

The first one, the family tree, is a template from my old scrapbook place and is no longer available. There are similar ones available, though, at various places. Here are a couple of templates here at GingerScraps. Looking at them I might have to buy a few more (dang it!) If you click on the image, I have linked them.

This is one I did with Kristina's family tree. I loved working with it. I might use it again for some of the layouts I am doing.
I am so inspired by this project and can't wait to dig my teeth in. I don't see how something like this can ever be finished and I have no idea how to arrange the pages inside the album so it is easy to follow.

All this talk of genealogy! :D I need to work on mine, and as I don't have younger kids at home anymore, I don't really have an excuse to not do it. Just pure laziness.

In other news, I made 2 pies today. I have 1 more to do but I've decided to do it tomorrow, because making pies on Thanksgiving is my little tradition. DH wanted to do them all today, but I told him no, for the reason I've said. I have been doing this for so long it would just seem weird to do it all the day before.
