Parade of colour & Cape spirit
They are the Cape Town Minstrels, the Coons or the Kaapse Klopse we know & love
Dressed to Dazzle
Every New Year, Cape Town erupts in colour as thousands take to the streets for the iconic Kaapse Klopse. The tradition dates back to the 1800s, when enslaved people in Cape Town were given one precious day off on 1 January - sparking a celebration that grew into today's vibrant carnival.
This year, 2025/6, was extra special: my nephew --------- and his son ------- joined the parade with their friends, suited up, sparkling and full of spirit. Their joy and energy shone through.
Over ten thousand Coons/Minstrels- bright costumes, banjos, painted faces - march through the city before heading to Green Point Stadium for music, dance and costume competitions. With classics like Take Me to Mannenberg echoing through the streets, it's pure Cape culture, rhythm and New Year magic.
The bolder the outfit and the livelier the beat, the better the vibe.
