A scrapbooking question (or two)....do you have favourite go to elements that you use frequently? Are there some you rarely use?

I love so many....curling ribbons and string, lace, brackets, scatters, paint swooshes and splats, flowers and foliage.....

I rarely use...journal cards, word art (not including word bits and strips which I do use from time to time), preconstructed clusters and titles, heavy frames....

Interested to hear your preferences.
 
Update! It was actually my *monitor* that went bad. That's what hubby figured out when he got home. It was that from the beginning (Friday). I screwed up when I thought it was the computer and botched a windows re-installation, so it had to go to the shop anyway to get fixed. It also got a new SSD that's bigger and new antivirus. I will get a new monitor tomorrow, but for now I am using one of hubby's. It is huge, LOL!

I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day! We went to a cute church dance and had some fun remembering moves we learned when we took dance lessons 20+ years ago! :)

OMG, Ane I was just heartbroken for you and now I'm overjoyed! What fun to have a HUGE monitor for a bit. Now go get one for yourself, huh?

Jill... truthfully, it's been so long since I've scrapped, I have to think, but I'm a wordaholic!!! I have to have word art on my pages. I also LOVE ribbons, scatters, paints and splats, flowers and foliage even on guy pages.

Now... if there's a heart, butterfly, dragonfly, FEATHERS, "starburst/firework-ish" element included, I WILL FIND A USE FOR IT!!!

I really don't use alphas, string (as opposed to ribbon... I like heavier), lace, brackets, journal cards, preconstructed clusters (REALLY DON'T LIKE THESE) or frames of any kind.
 
Oooh... good question, Jill. If it's metallic, especially copper, I will buy the kit and stage photos just to use it! LOL! I like flowers, string, ribbon, and anything that could be classified as office supplies (staples, paper clips, etc). I'll use word strips, word art, and journal cards if they support the photos.

I rarely use premade clusters (the shadows are never match the rest of the page and my OCD kicks in). And I never use paper dolls or overly "cutesy" elements. If the element is going to distract the eye from the photos, I don't use them. I like the photos to be the star of the page.

I am bad with patterned papers - I see wonderful pages with them, then I try to use them and they look so busy.

I also never use heavy frames. I had to use a few as CT and hated the pages I did with them.

I love journal cards, but very seldom use them unless it is a template that has spots for them. - like a project 52 template.

I love word bits, but struggle with word art. Sadly, I love it and buy a ton. I tend to use it on things other than scrapping pages.

I sometimes use pre-made clusters, hanging off a page. I use them a lot on other things, like slide shows.

AGREED, Shana! Really dislike that the shadows are totally wrong and totally "hate" cutesy. I used to CT (admin) for a designer that created those and it was really difficult. Tried to stick to the papers, words, ribbons and, yes, staples are good.

I usually put the patterns behind the solids, Lynnie, or use them as strips or in pieces, but I absolutely get what you mean.
 
I love using flowers & leaves, stitching, strings, office supplies, word bits, page borders, paint splats & stamps.

I rarely use journal cards, premade clusters, frames, buttons, cutesy items (like people/animals).

I am lucky- I work for a designer that makes stuff I love to use! :)
 
Happy Friday, all!!! I've managed to catch the sinus crud that sweet hubby has been fighting all week. We've both been tested and it's not Covid or Strep (which is making its rounds in this part of the world). So I'm working from home today with a big mug of hot tea and fresh box of tissues. I'm hoping to actually get back to scrapbooking later today! I'm supposed to go to a crop tomorrow, but we'll see how I feel (and I'm sure the ladies don't want to share my germs, either). LOL. Hope you all have a great day!
 
Jill, I think you already know all my scrapping faves. Feathers, clocks, word art, ampersands, brackets, frames behind photos.

And then there's the rarely used: cartoony cutesie figures. They just don't appeal to me. And flowers, I keep hoarding them, but as you know, mostly use a single leaf or branch. What is my issue? I can not say... clearly, I need therapy.

Karen- yes- my granddaughter has some serious opinions. When working on a page for Miss Fish this week, I told her I needed 2 more gymnastics/dance position-poses to go with 2 others I already had.
S- says why 2 and not 3 more.
Me- I have the other 2 already and it is a 4 photo template.
s- Can I see it?

S- hmmmm- I don't like those other splits and not fond of the page you started.

So- we took 5 new photos!!! Posting soon.

This week has been rough [actually 2 weeks] Hubby fell. Hurt his back. FINALLY went to the doctor on Monday. Then X-rays.... Saw the orthopedic yesterday and needs an MRI. He has a compression fracture T-12. Now in a back brace, but still not moving much.
Finally today got an MRI appointment for next week. It's been rough.

And the kids teachers loved their Valentine's Day gifts with the candy [scrapped card and wrapper] plus I embroidered coasters for them.

Ironic news on the important paper front, he didn’t need it anyway. Facepalm.

The hiring fair he went to yesterday was strange. It was pre-registration, which was fine. But apparently the company had emailed certain peeps back. Those peeps were called into the room and interviewed immediately and everyone else was told if they stick around they might get talked to. 45 minutes later he called it quits.

‘’today he went for a interview and he sounds positive about it. Fingers crossed. Work is very hard to come by here, throw in transportation issues, special accommodations and no experience it’s not been a great experience

the warm temperatures and melt is great for snow mold, and my allergies are terrible with it. I whistle with every exhale and just feel exhausted. I haven’t done anything, let alone what I should ge doing.
 
Little Miss is WAY ahead of the curve michi:) She was just a baby when I came to GS and now look at her...critiqueing her grandmother's scrapbooking:) Ouchie re the damaged back!!

glee, the reference to cutesy figures raises an analysis in my own head....for me it depends on what I am scrapping, for instance if I am scrapping about Harley, my greatgrandson, who is 20 months old, I happily use cute animals and elements. For my Australiana pages, I regret that most Aussie themed kit elements , with a few wonderful exceptions (such as KMess's gum leaves, blossoms and nuts in Jack Jill and Joey) are cutesy. Cute koalas and kangaroos dont work for me, I want more realistic style in those, and bright primary colours in the papers are not appropriate for my Aussie LOs. Australia is browns, ochres and dusty greens, muted dirty oranges, yellows, reds. More broadly, I really like some of the sketchy doodley characters and elements that are appearing such as in Neia's kits.
 
I had my stress test this week. Part 1 was Monday. I had a bad headache the rest of the day and my son said, I don't know how you are going to make your full shift at the library tonight. But I did. Part 2 was Thursday. I took the day off. The test wasn't as bad as Monday. I did have a little headache after but not as bad.
Thursday we went for the MRI results for Philip's wrist. All is good there. Wrist is overworked. He's excused from piano class until his next visit at the end of March and he has to go to OT. We thought he might have had a cyst, but thank goodness he doesn't.
Other than that, I'm still unpacking boxes that are in my bedroom from the move downstairs. I just have 1 more little pile of papers that have to be weeded and filed. Now I have one plastic box with ALL the papers in it except safe deposit worthy which is in a different place. My room is getting there slowly but surely.
It's the little stuff that I don't know what to do with. (Collapsible cup, extra lanyard, a bunch of masks, a few memorabilia that I can't depart with yet, extra charger, spare eyeglasses, bookmarks, nail clippers, extra labels for files, that one purse I'll use someday). They all seem like junk draw items. Two boxes worth. Uugh! What to do with them.
 
Happy Saturday. A chilly but beautiful day here in Florida.
We went to the local theater last night for a play- The Glass Menagerie [by Tennessee Williams]. I had no idea what to expect. It was deep in several places. The acting was outstanding.

Sherrie- Crossing fingers for your son's job.

LilyAne- sending good vibes on the testing.

Jill- yes- she was a baby when you 'met' her. A fun child to love. Both g'kiddo's are. She's into: school, dance, gymnastics and crafts. He is into baseball [big time], along with any sport he thinks he's playing.

As for elements used and not used: For me it depends on the theme of the page. Plus the designer's kit. I can scrap all styles.
Usually not a fan of white space [because I take a lot of photos]. Not a fan of flowers on boy pages.
Sometimes I like the clean lines. I do enjoy masking and paint and blending. I like themed elements.
Not too much on frames or journal cards.
And a couple of element styles I just avoid.

Does anyone ever buy kits that they just love the look of, even if it is not quite their style, just so they can look at the elements? I love cutesy little people but hardly ever use them.

I do use pre-made clusters, though. I did a whole album for a friend who was stuck doing a 50th Reunion album at the last possible minute - so I threw it together:

Hi all - Sorry I've been a little MIA this week has been crazy. I took a promotion at work to a different grant offered by the VA and have been learning all the little nuances that come along with it... Add to that my son took his oath to the Army today at the San Antonio Rodeo and we're having his 18th birthday party tomorrow and I am one exhausted momma. (Also probably why I'm fighting a migraine at the moment lol)
 
OMGosh!!! Stephanie, that's amazing. Thank you for his service AND yours. The military is a family service, let me tell you, from a Marine Mom. Good luck on the roller coaster! Let me know if you ever need a shoulder to scream on. Sending hugs.
 
Lilyann hope your testing results are good.

kits: hmmm, being on CT's I have learned to use whatever is thrown my way, but things I look for to actually buy myself are typically niche kits. Cars, geocaching, rabbits, for actual items I like to use is paint, graffiti, I love the boyish stuff like gears, stars and foliage so I do not have to use flowers on those layouts. I find masculine is hard to find. I find conference stuff hard to find. Volunteer stuff hard to find. Handicap, accessibles, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, boots, braces, casts, impossible to find. Yet part of our everyday life. I prefer realistic flowers over paper flowers, but love textures too, so contradictory, This year I am doing bullet journalling physically so I find myself attracted to digital ones. A good heart health kit would be nice, JoCee used to have one when she was here, I miss using it all the time, my most overused kit ever. I would love a everyday Canada kit, versus one as a travel destination. I do use premade titles, and word art all the time, if it is in the kit I will use it. I do wish that kit designers would leave a blank word strip that matches others that are premade so that I can use words like colour, favourite, honour, etc. So much is spelt wrong for us here in canada.

Alexis is getting ready to read out on a trip this week and of course storms are forecast which will make the roads treacherous.

Austin is so disappointed he hasn't got a call yet about the job, I've explained its a long weekend, but he is so down.

And is it a long weekend where you are and why?
 
Ive been enjoying hearing about everyone's scrappy likes and dislikes. Sherri, your comment about wanting blank wordstrips brought up one of my own wishes. I wish the designers would identify the fonts they use within their elements. There are occasion when I would like to match them on my page. Not a long weekend here, but holidays dont make much difference to my life these days. One day is much like another. Sometimes when I wake in the morning, I have to think what I had done the day before in order to figure out what day it is...lol
 
Sherri and Jill -- 100% agree about the blank word strip and knowing which font was used! How awesome would that be!?

I ended up NOT going to my crop and hanging with the girls on Saturday. Instead, my sweet hubby shared his sinus infection with me so I got some antibiotics and slept most of the day. I did mask up and left the house long enough to take some photos at my nephew's track meet. Luckily, it was local to me and he only had one event.

Despite sleeping most of the weekend, I did manage to create a few pages, so I feel like I'm getting back in the swing of things. I have this week to recover, but I'll be traveling for work again Feb. 28 through March 8... but at least I'll be taking my laptop with me for those events.
 
TOTALLY agree about wishing the designers would share the font they use in their kits, ladies! OMGosh that would be wonderful. I've even gone so far as to ask some in the past when I've become that desperate to match it. Unfortunately, some are not free, dangit.
We have today off for President's Day AND tomorrow for a teacher workshop day and I work a student contact schedule, so I have a very long weekend! It's supposed to snow a bunch tomorrow, so who knows what "might" happen Wed-Thu. Yes, "THAT MUCH".

Some designers do share the fonts they use. It is often on the text paper with the kit. Many template designers share the font as well. I often make my own word strips blank. I take an existing one and fill in where the words were so it looks blank- then type my own.

I also wish all kits came with a white or just off white solid paper. Plus not a fan of only patterned papers. Makes my head hurt to think too hard. LOL. Also not a fan of flowers on boy pages.

Lynnie- that book is fabulous and just the right amount of accents.

It's been interesting to see what everyone likes and dislikes in kits! I also appreciate solid-colored paper and knowing what font the designer has used. I've been known to alter elements too, Michi, to get the look I want. It helps to remember the tricks I used when I was a designer.

Things are going pretty well for me. I got a new monitor Saturday, and it is huge (27 inches). I feel I need to sit further back from it than I am, LOL! In just over a week, we're going to Utah to see friends and celebrate spring break with my family. My oldest and Eren have spring break the same week, so that's why we decided to do it. Since my DIL is pregnant with #2 grandchild, we're going to keep it close to their home, just in case she comes down with preeclampsia again.
 
I agree, knowing the font, and at least one neutral solid paper.

i did have to do a change to the word strip on my recent mail tree page.

Oh- now isn't this a hoot!! After me stating I like solid papers.....[and I do] - I just completed 2 pages that all I used was patterned papers!!!!

My Designer Name was AJsRandom Scraps. I worked for a couple of small stores that are now closed- Sunflower Scraps and Moo Two Designs

My ex husband (Jacob's dad) was also Army but I know it's gonna be soooo different being a Military Momma instead of Wife lol
Military runs in our family - Uncle and cousins were Navy, Brother was Air Force, and had friends who were Marines... Jacob's girlfriend is joining the Coasties so we'll have it all covered lol
