I have the iPhone 13 pro max and it's my primary camera. I'm not great with my big Nikon, so I always get better pictures with my phone. The low light and zoom have gotten so much better since my previous phone (iPhone 8 Plus) I think it would depend on what you want to take photos of. I've gotten really great portrait and macro shots with my phone, and I love the wider angle lens. But if you want to take amazing bird photos like Katherine, a big camera would probably still be better.
What I've found with my phone is that I actually enjoy spending time with my photos. I have iCloud, so I have access to all of my photos anywhere I go. My phone has helped me tremendously with CT assignments (need a beach photo for a beach kit? Do a search on your phone and there are lots of them, spanning many years) My phone reads text in photos so I can search for photos that way too. Every day my phone gathers up a set of photos and makes a little video for me. which are so fun to share, either by sending the video to someone or adding the photos to my list of things to scrap. If there is a funny quote or story that goes with a photo, I can add it to the metadata right thee on my phone. I interact with my photos so much more on my phone than I ever did on my big camera. It's something I enjoy doing almost every day.
