I was writing my mother's life story the other day (haha, that sounds as though I was making it up, I am actually working on it with her) and she was writing about the deprivations of the war. I am learning so much about her life... today's little gem:

That shipwreck visible from Formby shore is called the Pegu. It was en route from Glasgow to India carrying a lot of Whisky . It only intended to call in Liverpool to pick up Cotton but ran over the sandbank due to the early (1939) wartime blackout . The locals " salvaged " the Scotch, our own "Whisky Galore" story. Legend has it that your grandmother, my mum's, Uncle Jack salvaged a lot of it and kept it hidden. Jack inherited your great great grandfather's farm. They say he was never sober a day in his life after the rescue of the whisky from the Pegu.

"One night when we were sleeping in the cellar because of the bombings, a bomb landed in our back garden with a big whump and a thud. Water started leaking into the cellar. The air raid warden knocked on our door to let us know that the bomb had landed and had not gone off. Boy, were we lucky. The force of the landing had broken a water main. My mum picked up her box that had her marriage lines, birth certificates, identity cards and ration books and we headed for her mother's house in Formby. She would never go back to Bootle to live again. Interestingly enough, the shell of the unexploded bomb found its way to a spot outside Woolies (Woolworths) on Stanley Street and was used to collect money for those who had lost everything in the bombings. I was always proud that 'my bomb' had been put to some use."

My day always feels more complete when I can make Lynnie spew something on her keyboard or her cellmate.

For those of you who may not know or haven't looked at my username LOL , I am an avid quilter . I credit it with saving my sanity 16 years ago when a freak back incident left me partially disabled & living with pain 24/7. While terminally annoying , it is not terminal, and while I can no longer do certain things I enjoyed , I've replaced those with things I an do. I've sewn since the age of about 10, but about 14 years ago some friends introduced me to machine quilting and it's been one UFO after another ever since , no I seriously have finished a lot of things Are you relaxing a bit Lynnie ?

Anyway, yesterday Becky_a sent me a message on FB telling me I HAD to order a tee she'd discovered online , she was right , I did HAVE to and I DID! Here it is :

Isn't it AMAZING what those who came before endured and became stronger because of it _ They were SURVIVORS , they were strong , they had pride in their work & their work ethic. No one handed them anything and there was no sense of entitlement , if they didn't deserve it they wouldn't take it!

Good for you Lynnie for keeping those amazing stories of your mum's alive!

Lynnie, what great stories! Jeanne, that's a hilarious t-shirt! I'm glad you were able to find some new hobbies (obsessions? hehe) after injuring your back. I fractured my L2 vertebra years ago falling off a horse while jumping, and I'm so grateful it wasn't more serious and I can still be physically active.

Today I will be busy applying for TA (teaching assistant) positions. I have full funding through scholarships and fellowships, so I don't need to TA, but extra money is always nice and the teaching experience is important for securing a job after graduation. Fortunately I'm in a field with a shortage of PhDs, so unlike the poor humanities PhDs who have hundreds of people competing for one job, in my field (dietetics), programs are hiring people when they are ABD (all but dissertation - in other words, almost finished the PhD).

What kind of machine do you have ? Do you sew clothing or are you a quilter? I used to crochet a lot . It's easier on my hands than knitting which I also used to do. I'm in a couple of quilt groups on FB , I really enjoy them.

Brother- NS 1750D [includes 45 Disney embroideries]
Singer Futura- probably late 1990's, but the software to embroidery only updates to XP [and machine no longer made]
Singer XL100- early 1990 or 1991 ish.. it embroiders but uses a card to insert. Also no longer made.
Then going w a y back I have one the year I was born. LOL

My mother sewed. My great aunt sewed. and me.

I have quilted. I've made a day bed comforter, a king bed comforter [don't ask why- nightmare]. And several baby blankets.

I mostly sew for the grandkids and some for myself.

I no longer do alterations or creations for hire. That ship...has sailed! That train ...left the station. All done and retired in that dept.LOL

Those shirts are adorable ! I think an embroidery would be wonderful , but I think that ship has sailed as far as hubs is concerned .

I have a Janome 6500 in a cabinet that has an extension so I can set up my Janome serger at the same time when my grandson & I make pillowcases for the Ronald MC Donald House. Still kicking myself for trading in my 1980's Bernina when I got the 6500 . They gave me a whopping $125 for it. I also have a lighter weight Janome that I take to classes retreats. Hubs gave it to me a few years ago for Christmas. With my back issues the 6500 at 35 pounds was more than I could handle. I occasionally make pajamas for grands for Christmas , but quilting is my niche these days. The queen size I make I take to a longarm quilter to quilt.

I will still have time. Every non-trad PhD student I've spoken with has advised me to treat the PhD like a job - work 8 or 8.5 hours a day on PhD stuff, spend the rest of your time on hobbies, families, etc., or you will burn out (with the occasional "overtime" when things are due, or you need to get a grant application in, etc.) Makes sense to me - I'm all about balance in everything.

Well, the wedding was lovely and the reception just as lovely. And now after all that stress, I am really tired! Will hopefully have all the main pics soon, but hubby managed to snap a few that I can scrap right away. Phew! I'm off to try for a nap.

Today we are doing a grill-a- thon on our Primo Ceramic grill. Meat was the big deal with gas perks at the grocery store where I shop. We just put on 2 racks of ribs. They'll get the space for 6 hours, then we'll wrap in foil & add as many of the 20 chicken breasts and cook for an hour, while we eat , the rest of the chicken breasts then 16 burgers will get their time. This will all be done with the lump charcoal hubs added this morning . The grill is incredibly efficient and delivers tremendous flavor. The ribs are on today 's menu , menu is laughable , probably ribs & a beer The rest I'll vacuum seal and freeze , either for quick meals or to pull some summer out of the freezer this winter.

Best part.... I have $1.70 per gallon in gas perks on my card.:36_1_33::36_1_33:

We took our first ever "real" vacation this past month. We have 6 kids so when they were younger, it was hard to take them all anywhere (not to mention expensive) - we had a camper and did go on some overnight camping trips, but still not quite the same. Now that 4 of the kids are grown, we have a 10 and 11 year old at home. We went to Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, VA for two whole nights - the first time the kids had ever stayed in a hotel. Had a great time EXCEPT that I ended up with shingles! I was pretty miserable - had to miss work this past weekend (I'm a nurse and they told me I couldn't work quite yet - and I NEVER call of work) - still recovering - the rash is clearing up, but the stinging / burning / horrible sensation just doesn't want to go away! So yeah, just my lousy luck.

Oh no! Shingles is horrible. I hope you were diagnosed in time to take the antivirals. When I had shingles, because I was young (in my 30s), it was misdiagnosed as another type of rash, and by the time it was diagnosed as shingles, it was too late for the antivirals. I was in a lot of pain for a couple of months because of it! I hope that yours clears up more quickly!

Oh no! Shingles is horrible. I hope you were diagnosed in time to take the antivirals. When I had shingles, because I was young (in my 30s), it was misdiagnosed as another type of rash, and by the time it was diagnosed as shingles, it was too late for the antivirals. I was in a lot of pain for a couple of months because of it! I hope that yours clears up more quickly!

Yes, I got on Valtrex within a couple days of the rash beginning. It is terrible - the insane burning / stinging is awful! The rash is going away, but the residual feeling is still there. They put me on Prednisone as well and apparently it causes insomnia - which I already had - I haven't slept more than 3 or 4 hours a night in spurts since this started. It's been one big nightmare!

I am glad I re-read the last sentence! I kept thinking "Boy is she hungry!" Now I am just thinking "Boy, I wish I lived closer!"

I am so sad for you. Such a fabulous vacation and you end up sick, and so painful. Our neighbour is elderly and has been down with them for such a long time.

Just popping in. I have missed ya all! Soccer summer season just drains me physically and mentally. The heat is a killer but I love watching my son play. It is his passion and I love seeing my kids do what makes them happy. With that being said, I am so done! He played his last summer tournament this past weekend. They took the silver medal and we were so proud of them. They were down four key players so it was impressive that they did so well being so short staffed.
And my dearest and bestest friend in the whole world is here with me until the end of the month. We are having so much fun catching up. She lives in upstate NY but has a daughter in CO so when she comes in the summer to see her daughter I get to snag her before she flies back to her husband in NY. We really were sisters before this life I am just sure of it.
So, I'm trying really hard to keep caught up this month but if I fall short or seem MIA, this is why. I'm just refilling my friendship basket cuz it has to last until next summer. Maybe we will get brave and take some pictures together. We both hate that so much.

I don't do well in the heat either.... I am so glad Karen was a dancer and the boys just did brief football stints, and that was just with their school, so it was much easier and loads of less heat!

Take pictures, Heidi, at some point, if you are smart, you just accept how you look and love the friendship that is framed in the camera It doesn't really matter how we look, it is the love and friendship that is reflected in our smiles and our eyes.

Poking my head in here after being nudged by Lynnie....how is everyone? I'm finishing up almost 3 weeks of not having the kids because they are on vacation with their father. I haven't been scrapping but I have taken up working out twice a week...my back has really been bothering me and it's about time I worked on my core to support my back more, so it has been more physical therapy than a workout. Still on the hunt for a job...I've been on 2 interviews for jobs but haven't been chosen yet. I have a third interview next week, so fingers crossed!
