Hi,

My name is Andi and I live outside Duluth, MN. I had handmade scrapbooks for all my kids and we had a house fire in January. Most everything was lost to smoke damage. I had my books "cleaned" but I'm not loving how they turned out. They still smell like smoke. I'd like to try digital scrapbooks to replace them but I have no idea what I'm doing. I just downloaded some templates, but I don't know how to even add pictures to them. Any video links you can share with me to show me the basics would be greatly appreciated. I've searched the blog, but even that is overwhelming. Also, when I make a design, what to do I do with it? Do I print it? How do I put things into albums?

Hi @Andi welcome to GS!
I will recommend you the next:
- chose an editor: start with a free one, like photopea
- watch youtube videos, once and again till you dominate at least the basics, there are a lot of tutorial for photopea.
- scan your photos or download your photos from your camera into an specific album.
Digital layouts can be printed as individual pages and added to traditional scrapbook albums, just remember to save them in 3600 px, and JPG for a good print quality. I recommend you to create a folder for your layouts.
Basic things that you will need are papers (12 x 12), elements saved in png and mixed media (doodles, painting, etc). Once you have your editor, you can start layering the png files and photographs on the paper or papers. I highly recommend you to search and watch youtube videos.

Welcome to GingerScraps. I hope you are able to enjoy creating digital Scrapbook pages.
I know what it is like to lose treasured things. Our home was flooded 3 years ago and I lost just about all my photos from before digital cameras along with all the paper scrapbooks I had created over the years. There was only one saved wedding photo because it was in a frame above the flood water level.

@Andi I totally forgot, you can always use quick pages. Whether you are paper or digital scrapper, it takes few minutes to have done a page, actually it's the faster way of creating layouts. All you'll need is an editor (you can choose the one that suits you, I suggest an editor online), upload the quick page, add your photos and depending on the editor you're using try to follow the instructions, when it's ready, and you like the result, save them in 3600 px so you can print them and that's it.

There are already a lot of tips, so I only say welcome to GS. Don't hestitate to ask.

So sorry to hear of the fire. You've come to the right community to start digi-scrapping. Can't wait to see what you will create.

Welcome to GS @Andi - So sorry about your fire, such a devastating loss. I hope you find digiscrapping an effective way to recreate all your paper layouts. Once you learn the basics you’ll be on your way!
On get started: it will depend on what editing program you decide to use as to the steps you’ll follow. I’d recommend trying a free one such as @Grace has suggested. That’s how I was introduced to digiscrapping years ago. I searched for a free editing program, read some tutorials, watched some videos, and found a digiscrapping forum where I asked a lot of questions!! And don’t forget to check out the Welcome Wagon thread for some fabulous gifts from our designers to get you started!
Again, welcome, good luck, and have fun!!

Welcome,,, this is an awesome forum, I am sure you will love it... I use a free program called GIMP & I also use Glimpse, they are alike in so many ways. And there are a lot of tutorial videos on you tube for both. It can get frustrating learning everything in digital scrapping, but if you stick with it, one day you will say wish I had done this sooner...LOL Good luck on your journey. And there are so many wonderful people here if you have ?'s. Have a wonderful day!

I am so sorry to hear about the smoke damage to your scrapbooks!! Ouch! This is a wonderful community! Ask any questions and I know there is someone here to help ya!
Welcome to GingerScraps!

Welcome to Gingerscraps, Andi!
I'm sorry about your scrapbooks. I lost my scrapbooks a few years ago when my external hard drive broke.

So sorry to read about your lost scrapbooks. I started with paper before going digital and would be heartbroken to loose them. I'm trying to convert them over. You'll find lots of help, answers and friendly scrappers here. Welcome!
