Totem Poles

I live in Alaska and these photos were all taken in Ketchikan and Saxman where I lived for 5 years. The main cultures in southeast Alaska are Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. Totem Poles represent ancestry, history, and cultural stories. These poles, often made from red cedar, serve as visual records of lineage, important events, and clan crests. I know 5 totem pole carvers personally.

Those are usually memorial poles to honor a deceased loved one. The top carving is the clan crest. They may also have something carved on the bottom to represent something special about the person or their family.
