Martha McDonald, an interdisciplinary artist
created a beautiful mourning gown from black
crepe paper, which she activated and animated
through performance by standing beneath dripping
water. Using gesture, singing and narrative,
“The Weeping Dress”
functioned as both performance and installation,
arising from detailed research into Victorian
mourning culture. The artist discovered that during
a Victorian woman’s first year of mourning,
nothing she wore could reflect light. Dresses were
therefore made from materials such as wool bombazine
or crepe, fabrics that did not readily hold plant-based
dyes. Over time, exposure to rain and heat caused
the colour to fade and run, staining the body and
gradually degrading the fabric. In the live
performance, the dripping water—designed to
evoke the tears of grief—caused dye to leach from
the black paper, leaving the dress faded and stained,
echoing the effects experienced by mourning women
in those Victorian times

2019....I didn’t see the performance but the actual faded and stained dress along with a video and description of the performance and a photo of the dress in its original state were part of an art gallery exhibition in our town. Art comes in so many forms and I am forever amazed by people’s creativity. I often wonder...how on earth did they think of that!...and sometimes...why didnt I think of that!!
What a great page Jill and what an interesting story. Love the dress, it's hard to believe it's made from crepe paper.

love how you placed the photo of the dress in the mask. it really blends so awesomely. Great history and journaling too. perfect kit choice....looks like paper and vintage . so pretty

Wowwww, Jill, this is amazing!! Thanks for sharing. I knew they always had to wear black for a year or so, but the non-reflective part, jeez! What an incredible art statement/performance, I'd love to see that vid, too. I like the way you did the two different fonts to differentiate the art story from your own story about it. That lavender bow is an incredible accent due to your perfect placement. I'm loving all the scatters, too. I also appreciate the attention you put into the bg papers and edges, though not large in expanse, they have impact and perfectly add to your overall composition so wonderfully. I just did my Baker's Best nomination, darn it! This is stellar work, my friend. Now I want to look up this artist and discover what else she has created.

You did a great job on this layout, all that history, the photos the story that goes with, very interesting. I knew about the black mourning dress but not the wet bit. I love how you put this together, the mask, the lace and the photos and the perfect colour pallet! I keep telling you - 'Your good you are'!

As always, your design feels creative without being overwhelming. It’s very well balanced. Your use of lace echoes the feel of the time also. Love the tiny white flowers and that pretty bow so firmly pinned down the right of the journaling. Interestingly enough, after mourning, the ladies would wear half-mourning, which was greys or lavenders for a while.

Oh my, the Victorians were sooo...well...Victorians.
Fantastic story and presentation. Awesome before and after photos.
LOVE how you accented the page with vintage lace, subdued saturation from the era and the very attractive photo masking, frame and border work. It really has a genuine, authentic feel.

In real life...(I got to thinking...and God save us...here it comes:)
Wonder how many times one woman needed to wear all black for a year.
Well, Fiddle-dee-dee I can think of one already.

My questions would be:
1. Underneath it all, would we find a blazing red bustier, or just the normal very hairy Victorian legs?
2. A cache of arsenic for the next dude that treated her wrong?
3. A lifetime credit account to Curtains-R-Us?

I'll think more about that tomorrow.
