Mr Moment was my Std 3 (Grade 5) Maths teacher. I remember being pretty good at Maths and always finishing ahead of the class. In most subjects that would mean I'd start chatting, but Mr Moment was a step ahead. He would always have extra "puzzles" for me to figure out. Sums that would be a bit more challenging. I loved it! It made Maths into a game and I had a blast. Thanks to him, I went through school loving Maths and seeing it as a game, something fun that I did happily..
Mr De Klerk was my Standard 5 and Standard 6 English teacher (possibly before that too). He would give us all kinds of interesting topics to research and made reading and learning and all things related to "English", fun.
I remember spending many happy hours in the library with my classmates when most of us should have been in madrassah. We were there so much the librarians knew us by name. They were always very friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. Even though I imagine we weren't always as quiet as we could or should have been, I don't remember any of them ever being harsh, strict or reprimanding. We had a blast hanging out at the library researching various topics.
One that I remember quite clearly was a Spanish tomato festival, La Tamatina, just because it was so odd. A festival where they threw each other with tomatoes LOL Imagine that! A giant food fight in the streets!
Mr De Klerk classes made us curious about the world, eager to read, and very familiar with the Dewey Decimal system LOL

Encyclopedias were no stranger to us and research was a game.
I believe it was in his class that I first started enjoying writing. Initially I'd write essays as a way to vent (I was an introvert) but later for the fun and creative outlet, and as time progressed I started writing poetry and entering competitions both locally and abroad. My work is published both as a book and in various anthology.
