The shift from control to guidance to - eventually - trust - is easy to talk about but harder to navigate. As years of structure give way to open conversations, boundary setting and frequent push and pull of independence, I often find myself in the paradox where my pushing earns me an eye roll but my pulling back results in raised eyebrows and a bewildered 'what you don't care now?' I try to trade micromanagement for mentorship, which introduces chaos to his life as he learns to deal with life and choices on his own. There are years of curveballs and the unexpected on this winding road to the calm in the eye of the storm.
