We spent the weekend at our favorite camping spot - Campbell’s Lake, owned by a paper company, posted, but a secret hangout for locals anyway. The fresh water lake was a short way from the miles of totally deserted beach on the Gulf of Mexico (the white dunes are in the background of the above photo), but we camped on the lake side since gators had only been on the endangered list for 5 years and they had not yet rebounded. The few we saw stayed on the other side of the lake. We had so much fun that weekend, swimming (while watching for snakes), playing, egg hunting - and eating.. The big purple rabbit was a hit and almost everyone had a photo with it. That area is now part of TopSail Park and is still lovely (and the gators have definitely rebounded- no swimming in those lakes) but the magic of that weekend and others spent there exist only in our fond memories and photos.
