Journaling: Processing walnuts may seem a rather grotesque process since the fly larvae works on breaking down the hull so the walnuts appear “rotten”. However, they are perfect - the nut is safe, just push off the black mess, rinse, dehydrate to dry. Cure for 3 weeks. nature is amazing. | Oct 2025

This is beautifully done and very interesting, I had never even wondered about walnut processing before. I love the colours on this page, the clusters are so pretty. This Lo has been a joy to view.
 
If have to agree on the sounding grotesque. But hey, perfect for Halloween. Gorgeous clustering, too. Thanks for the intell, I had no idea.
 
@Jill & @glee Lol - I agree but as foregerchef says - 'make your peace with creepy crawlies, and let them help remove the green hulls for you' Those green hulls are impossibly difficult, otherwise. Even the squirrels like to wait until they have softened. Of course English Walnuts, the kind that are in the stores, are a different process.
