..I think maybe you might remember me, I recall having a catch up here at GS and identifying ourselves a while back. In case you cant remember, I was evergreen100 at DSP.

I certainly do remember you :hiand I know exactly what you mean about grieving when the old site shut down.

Sounds like you've had a lovely family Christmas.

Well, Julia, you made my day by jumping in here. I hope to see you scrapping again, you are such an awesome scrapper :)

Hi Jan,

I know exactly what you mean by "cheat meals." That is the terminology on the challenge we are doing, but there really isn't anything on our chosen eating plan that is forbidden. We take it to mean that for the length of the challenge, we follow our plan meals exactly with no exceptions. It is easy because the recipes are so great and the plan is easy to follow. Exceptions would be things like chocolate, cookies and other 'empty' foods, which we don't want to be eating anyway. We also want to only be eating whole foods and not things with a lot of chemicals, gums, etc. We actually discussed changing the terminology to 'exceptions' but it didn't fit on the journal pages I created.

There are other things on the challenge we don't really agree with. They 'require' that you drink a gallon of water a day on the challenge. We followed it for a while, but it didn't feel right, so we reduced it to an amount that seemed right for our age and weight. My friend actually got dangerously low on some of her electrolytes, etc. She always has a problem with magnesium, but her sodium was really low. Her doc reduced her daily liquid intake until her numbers stabilized.

On the whole, the challenge has been great for us and we elected to do a modified form of the plan without a break between the two. We love how we are feeling at this point in our lives.

The issue with prescriptions sounds horrendous. I can't imagine if you had needed medications and were not able to get them. It is scary.

Good morning, ladies. After a nice winter break, I'm back to work. I won't even tell you what my desk looks like. Let's just say it's going to be a long day here. Ha.

Lynnie, thanks for sharing your plan with us. I love that you have tasks for physical as well as mental needs. I love that there is a reading component, but curious why fiction isn't allowed. Hmmm....

Jill, if you're feeling hot, come visit me in Kansas. It's nice a chilly here without being too bitterly cold this week. I think our expected high is 45 degrees F today. I plan to go walk after work (whenever that may be)... it will most likely be at the gym or at our shopping mall. Our poor mall is nearly a ghost town. Only one out of every five stores is actually open. Most of the people there are the mall walkers.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Well, I was supposed to go back to work today, but mother nature had other plans and we have a flex learning day today so I'm working from home! YAY! I think CV taught them that it's easier to call these flex learning days and protect our kids since we still get federal funds as long as the kids are "in school". I love it because I get so much more done when I'm at home. I had no idea how much more efficient I was when I wasn't bothered by "people" until CV. Sorry... I've grown into a hermit lately. lol
Have a great Tuesday. Be safe wherever you are.

hi all!
Lynnie, I have to tell you that my grand-da was a black haired Scotsman and my mom always told us it was good luck if a black haired man crossed your doorstep first on New Year's Day. So Andy would make the rounds and come back quite tippled from all the toasting he did along the way. My hair is also black, but alas, I'm a wahine. I always hoped I'd have black haired blue eyed sons, especially when I married a guy w blue eyes like my mom. Not to be, both have brown eyes and brown hair!
happy hogmanay!
( i was actually sick this NY and spent it prone, holding my CBD drugged grandDOGger who was terrified of all the loud firecrackers and bombs blowing off around us. An old school Hawaii tradition that needs to stop.)

Shana, I don't know why fiction is not supposed to be part of the required reading. My friend and I decided that good fiction is very beneficial and that we could intersperse that with the regular reading.

Carla, I actually enjoyed the hermit like existence during COVID.The days were a little more relaxing, assuming you weren't struggling with COVID.

Glee, my grandson Mark was the first across the door so we should have great luck this year. His hair is very black. My dad had black hair and he was always the first across when I was growing up.

For Christmas, I gave my friend Lois a movie a month for a year. It is a chance to spend time together. She lives alone, so it is a real treat for her. Today she picked "Avatar Way of Water." I am amazed by the quality of CGI these days. It would not have been my choice, but I was enthralled.

I am pretty tired though. I did not sleep well last night and I am ready for a nap!

Shana (it will take me a while to get used to that name having been calling you Breoni in the gallery for a long time), I would love to visit somewhere cold...it is too hot here and my air con is not working...eeeek!! It is a ducted evap cooler which is many years old now and most people go for the refrigerated variety now, but when we had ours installed it was the most recommended type for our hot dry summers. The pump has obviously stopped working because only air is coming through the vents, not cold air (created by fan blowing through wet filters). Maintenance man can't get here until Monday...I will have turned into the lump of grease by then!! People do their exercise walking through malls? Not a thing here where I live (maybe in the big cities), interesting though.

Glee!!! How lovely to see you here!! My resolution this year is to take part in this thread more often, be a regular instead of a random.

I quite enjoyed Covid lockdown as well, Lynnie, I am a tad reclusive by nature and didnt mind the isolation...I was quite happy with TV, movies, books, computer, phone chats, forum chats...I missed my daughters and grandkids company though. It was mostly through our winter when we had our longest lockdown so it was a treat to stay in bed for longer and not worry about someone knocking on the door and catching me unprepared for visitors..lol. Had my dear husband been living during the lockdown, I think he would have been climbing the walls in frustration though.

No CV for us, Lynnie! (well, maybe, but never confirmed and it didn't last long) I quite enjoyed the respite from "peopling" too. We have another "snow" flex learning day today. The roads were HORRIBLE yesterday. Hubby told me when he got home and then I texted Anne late last night to make sure she got home eventually. Her two word response, "SO BAD".

Jill, feel free to call me by any name! LOL! My birth name, Shana, is pronounced Shay-na... and no one ever seems to be able to pronounce or spell it correctly. So I'm used to answering to all sorts of names! At the office, I'll get calls for Sharron, Shannon, Shania, Gina... yeah... it runs the gamut! :)

Lynnie, what a neat idea to give a friend a movie a month. Randy and I want to see the new Avatar movie, but we haven't made time for it yet. We just learned that one of our theaters is closing permanently. A new theater opened just at the start of Covid... they managed to hold on, and their theater is so beautiful and they have all the fancy screens. So I'm not surprised the older theater couldn't compete.

I'm going to Avatar today! Lucky to have a totally redone fancy reclining seat theater w small audience sizes just a few minutes from my house. When I first moved to this side (windward) of the island, Kailua had a drive-in and 3 movie theatres and nearby Kaneohe had another one plus a multiplex in the big mall there. Now, only the multiplex mall one and this semi-recently redone one near me have survived.

I'm not sure if mall walking is all that popular in Hawaii, but we don't need it since it's almost always walking weather. (except for today, i bet they are walkiing the mall today!!) My house doesn't have a/c as we usually have the tradewinds. But I notice all the newly built house have it, so guess everyone is global warming ready. This past summer was nice and temperate, but I think the one before was horrible hot.
i'm off to the blue world....

Interesting spelling variations between countries...I keep getting a cheeky red line under some of my words (How rude!) Theater/theatre has attracted my notice today..there is that cheeky red line popping up again beneath my spelling of the word. We have a single theatre complex here consisting of about six smallish theatres. Sometimes when I go to the movies with my friend, there are only a dozen or so people in attendance which makes me wonder how they stay afloat, but on the other hand, the day the granddaughters took me to see the latest Jurassic Park earlier this year ( I LOVE dinosaurs and always have to drag along a grandkid or two to justify this little old lady's attendance at a dinosaur movie:) ), we were in a long line and only just scraped in before they turned the rest of the people away.

Shana, in my mind I pronounce your name Shayna (but I will probably always think of you as breoni)

The washing machine is calling to me to come peg out the laundry...I wish it would peg it out itself!!

Have a great day ladies.

A GREAT eye doctor appointment yesterday. I could 'read' the smallest line of text on the little card they give you to hold at reading distance. I do get antsy on those- is one better than 2... 3 better than 4.
She had so many drops in me checking everything I was a nervous wreck and couldn't even come on yesterday to type! My eyes so dilated.

I told the ophthalmologist- Your friend made me nervous. He asked why? and I explained. I am seeing well. Leave me alone! AND I think cataract surgery should come with at least ONE full house cleaning service. Oh the dust I can now see.

G'kiddo's all the week until 4. Hope to catch with everyone plus scrap.

I was raised in the snow, but never lived in it as an adult. I am not sure I could cope.

I have been pronouncing it "Shah-na" in my head. I am going to have to retrain myself. I called Ane "Ayn" in my head for a long time before I learned how to pronounce it. One of the trials of living online :)

It was the best gift I could give her. She is the sweetest person, but does not have a lot of friends and lives alone. Her family is a long way away, so we are really all the family she has. Although I met her first, she is a little older than I am and spent a lot of time with my mother. They would go out to eat once a week, to the movies and do all kinds of things together. After my mother died, she became increasingly reclusive, so we have been working hard to give her some company.

I have to say, I really enjoyed Avatar. I am going to take my grandson to see it in 3-D, although I am not sure I can handle the flying parts haha.

You will have to tell us how you enjoyed Avatar. There were not that many movie theatres in Hawaii when I lived there a million years ago. I also had a small child who did not settle well in the theatre. I do enjoy going to the movies these days if there is a recliner involved haha. Otherwise, I have a MASSIVE TV at home (60 inches) and I sort of like watching films in my pajamas with a blanket and the loo close by.

I am torn between two worlds spelling-wise. Both are so familiar to me that I never really know how to spell things any more. The 'our' ones I tend to spell the English way... Honour, Neighbour, Saviour, Colour, etc. The "mme' ones I don't usually... Programme. "ise' words confuse me " Organize/organise. Theatre, centre, metre can go either way. Moving from one country to another confused me on both spelling and expressions. I am a haphazard mixture of both.

I love dinosaur movies. I am a huge Jurassic Park fan. I read the book before they thought about movies. I love Michael Crichton. I used to own all his books. The movies are breathtaking on the big screen.

A GREAT eye doctor appointment yesterday. I could 'read' the smallest line of text on the little card they give you to hold at reading distance. I do get antsy on those- is one better than 2... 3 better than 4.

I find eye doc appointments stressful. I can't tell a lot of times which is which. Plus my eyes are not that great even after I have new glasses.

Haha about the dust! My cleaning life is much easier if I wander around without my glasses. Eveyrthing is blurred and looks very clean :)

Ok so enlighten me as to how Ane is pronounced? In my head I pronounce it as Ayn as in gain, pain etc. In my head, you all speak with an Aussie accent too. English is a confusing language, sometimes the spelling of words just does not make sense, it must be so hard for non English speaking people to learn the written language.

Ive read a lot of the Michael Crichton books, although I seem to recall not enjoying all of them. Loved the Jurassic Park ones though and, like you Lynnie, I read them before the movies were thought of. I was so excited when I heard movies were being made of them. I was surprised to learn a few years back that Michael Crichton was the creator of the ER TV series.

Hey Jill, my name is pronounced like Ann or Anne. It's not English at all, so don't blame yourself for not knowing. :) It's the Danish version of Ann or Anne.

Happy Thursday.
I think I have all the names pronounced correctly! Growing up 'Michelle' was always pronounced as "Michael" the first day of school. Plus my last name [maiden name], wasn't pronounced or spelled correctly. Add to that...I went by a nickname- "Shelley". So embarrassing as a young one in school.

When we moved to Florida, I was still 8. Starting school in the fall [now age 9] with a new school, new grade, new teacher who didn't believe in nicknames- only given names. Well much to her surprise, I never learned how to spell Michelle! So she kept handing me back the papers on that first day of school due to misspellings.
Extremely frustrated- I must have gotten my Irish up and then turned the papers in the just 'm'.!!!!
m

Now my name is LilyAnn and I was named after my both grandmothers. I usually don't leave a space between the two names but capitalize the "A". On my birth certification they have Ann as my middle name but my parents always called me LilyAnn. I was called Lily by lots of people. I do prefer the full name but my family call me "Lil."
As for the spelling by others, it runs the gamut. I guess you get used to it, but it is annoying.
I very rarely, if ever, find any souvenirs with my name spelled correctly.

Interesting conversation about name pronunciation...pronunciation is an interesting topic in general along with spelling differences and weirdness I believe. It is hard to actually describe the pronunciation of words with written language when trying to explain how words are said in different countries.

Michi, my younger daughter's name is Michelle, she has always been called Shell or Shelley. My name is just plain Jill, not short for anything...I occasionally get Jilly and I quite like that, it gives me the feel that that person likes me.

Wow, I was busy for a couple of days and had 3 pages of posts to read! Good to see you joining us, Glee!!

I spent a couple of hours at the pharmacy/grocery store on Tuesday; I couldn't wait any longer so I threw my pill bottles in my purse and went in person. There were notices up everywhere describing the IT failure and what they weren't able to do, plus a plea for people to be civil (I'm paraphrasing). The pharmacist at the counter said she could give me 3 months' worth of the two I needed, and she'd be the prescriber of record. But it would take at least an hour to fill them because there were others in the queue. (Like the lady in front of me who had at least 8 bottles she was refilling...) I "shopped" for as long as I could then went to sit in one of the overflow waiting room chairs for the walk-in clinic. While I was there I got a message from my sister. Our brother-in-law had collapsed at the gym (he's 65 and has a LOT of health issues) in cardiac arrest. But his stars were aligned - a flight medic was working out next to him and saw him go down. He started CPR, got EMS arranged, called for an AED and got his heart beating again almost immediately. By the time the ambulance got there, he was sitting up talking. He spent the night in the ICU then went to the telemetry unit, which made him happy because he CAN'T do bedrest. He had to be transferred to a bigger centre for definitive treatment and I haven't had an update today. I'm not bugging my sister; she'll text me when she's ready.

I finally made it to Kamloops to see my parents and other siblings yesterday. Our houses are 176 km (109 miles) but over a mountain highway; in summer it takes me 2 hours and 15 minutes to make the trip one way. Outbound I made pretty decent time, and there was only one short stretch of iffy road conditions. We had a lovely visit; my mom hugged me at least a dozen times! My sister plied me with all the tea I could drink and my brother gave me my annual butt-chewing for giving him a Christmas gift. I knew I'd have to head back home by 3 pm so it wouldn't be dark for most of the trip. My night vision isn't great, and the bit of highway between Vernon and Lake Country is really challenging to drive. I didn't take into account the traffic in Kamloops at the on-ramp to the Trans-Canada, or that there's be 3 times as many cars on the road as there were on my way up. (Nowhere to pass in the mountains.....) I ended up driving through Vernon at rush hour, in full-on dark. So that leg took 25 minutes longer. I spent more time in the car than I did with my family, but that's okay. It was worth it. Now to figure out what to do with the bottle of peppermint schnapps my mom sent home with me... :(

Jan, I'm so grateful your brother had everything in place for his resuscitation and recovery! PRAISE GOD!

You can only imagine what what people do with Carla and my maiden name was Letch. That was so wonderful growing up. I've put it out of my mind. Our youngest, Anne, has a darling story of her 6th grade teacher running roll the first day of school and calling her name and UNLIKE your teacher Michi, she said, "Do you like to be called Anne or Annie?" Anne said she didn't care so Mrs Chamberlain said, "Well, what does your mom call you?" and without missing a beat, Anne says, "Peanut". From then on and to this day, Mrs C, who actually works in the building I'm in now, still calls our Anne "Peanut". Saw her the other day and regretfully had to inform her that her "Peanut" turned 30-years-old and proceeded to show her pix of "Peanut's" two kids! LOL

Wow, Jan... your brother was so lucky! Glad this story had a happy ending!

LOL Carla... love the Peanut story. We have a professional in our small community (was a police officer and is now a businessman) and people to this day still call him by his grade school nickname of Toad. Officer Toad? LOL!

Glad it's Friday. It's been a crazy busy week. This afternoon is the funeral for my husband's farmer-producer who choked on a piece of steak before the holidays. We're expecting a huge turnout so we've been asked to arrive early. I've helped the widow gather photos and send in the photo for the obit, things like that. She seems to be doing remarkably well.

Tomorrow, I'm spending the day with Randy's brother, my SIL, and my nephew... we're going to a museum in Kansas City that has a temporary art deco exhibit, so that should be fun. Hope everyone has a great day!

I had a scare today that requires follow-up. Went in for blood work at 8am for diabetes meds. She listened to my heart and didn't like the way it sounded so she took an EKG. My heart was beating pre-maturely every second beat. She insisted I see the cardiologist upstairs and that she would recommend not waiting until after vacation (I'm leaving tomorrow morning). I was supposed to go into work at 10:45 as 1/4 day. They rushed and made the appointment for cardio at 10:45. I went home, had breakfast and went back to the appointment. Doc said I'm good to go on vacation but scheduled an Electrocardiogram for Jan. 24. I'll need a stress test (which will probably be the nuclear one because I can't walk that long due to my knee issues). I than went to work for 1/2 day.
Hoping this is not all I'll be thinking about next week.

Stay well. Talk to you soon. I will have my laptop with me!

Glee- Avatar is on our list. We hope for the big comfy chairs as well.

Jan- Wow- that your brother in law was in the place he was and with the right people. Glad he is doing well.

Carla- I wish I had had Anne's teacher! For the 40 years I taught school, I made it a point to pronounce kids names correctly and let them be called what they wanted. Well all expect one. Stephanie. For whatever reason she was a "Melissa" to me. Knew the family quite well. They gave up on me and signed Christmas cards with her name as Melissa. Ran into her at Target one day when she was in her late 20's about age 30. She called out- Hi Mrs. B- it's me- Melissa!!!

LilyAnne- that is a scary situation and glad they got you checked out!

G'kiddo's today. It was a nice day with them.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. I'm planning on a Joann's trip for fabric to remake outfits for my cousin's Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls her grandmother made. Plus granddaughter requested more thicker yarn to make loom hats. Now I have a lot of yarn here but she wants the thicker to go with the larger gauge loom. We traded looms today. I guess we are sharing.
and of course- football.

Good evening and Happy New Years, ladies.

This last year has been very difficult. I am trying to keep things balanced and it is not working very well, but gosh I am trying. Work has been extra messy, and in a lot of ways is indicative of the turbulent economic systems worldwide right now- a lot of cost cutting measures, a lot of trying to make a full fondue out of two sticks of string cheese and a tealight. It's creating stress on an already stressful position- I had the last week of the last year on vacation, and on the 22nd I requested five other people work to cover one task that I tend to spearhead- it's not something only I can do. It's not something only I SHOULD do- it's a feedback inbox, as long as someone reads English, it's easy. Well. I came back on the 2nd to 100 mails going through the 23rd- the day I went on vacation. By the time I was done with invoicing, it was at 160. I filed complaints with the heads of the EU and US offices and said that they can figure out a way to make this not a 'me, personally' problem now, or they can do so when I'm on a month long sick leave because I can't do it any more. The US office answer was to say I could have A and M to help. A barely comes in the 3 days a week she is supposed to, M is supposed to be full time but is chronically late, full of excuses, and maybe works 15 hours in a 42 hour expected week. I'm not sure how giving me someone who has, on the 6th day of the month, called in sick every single day so far. I don't know that this actually has a solution yet, but I am willing to go through with my threat and take sick leave if I can't get the load rebalanced in a way I'm not being crushed.

LillyAnn - Scary!! I am glad that they got you in for a check right away.

Oh this group moves fast and furiously I really must say! Wonderful to have such a dear group of women friends worldwide!!
Due to scheduling, Avatar got postponed til tomorrow. Today was a fun trip to a big garden pot importer warehouse for my son to use the Cmas gift cert I gave him. I love that place and was so happy to finally share it w him. He loved it, too.

Scary good timing for both Jan's BIL and Ms. LA (LilyAnn). Yikes. Also, that night drive sounded harrowing, Jan!!
Sylfie, that work sitch sounds just horrible. Yuk.
Tonight, it's full moonrise walk at the beach w my guy. Still a romantic old geezer!

LilyAnn - I hope you have a marvelous vacation and all good news from the dr when you return.

Sylfie - I'm so sorry for your work situation. I had to laugh when I read your "make a full fondue out of two sticks of string cheese and a tealight"... I'm going to have to borrow that phrase!

Glee - how wonderful that your and your "old geezer" are still setting romance goals! <3

We attended the funeral yesterday and I'm so glad we got there early. The venue held 300 people in the main hall... there had to be 400 in the main hall, then they put people in the basement room and the balcony, and then they had to put people on the west patio (outside). Luckily, it was 46 degrees F and no wind. So the family can feel honored by how many people came to the funeral. It was officiated by a Baptist minister who knew the deceased well and who had a great sense of humor. So while there was the appropriate mourning there was also a lot of laughter. And that's always healing. After, Randy and I took a group out for a late lunch / early supper. We got home about 6 p.m. and we were in bed and asleep by 7 p.m. He's just completely tuckered out.

I'm going to have to wake him about about an hour or so to get ready for the museum trip with his brother and family. So in the meantime, I'm doing exciting things like laundry and shopping online. LOL. I got a needle felting kit for Christmas and made a cute little kitty cat for my first project (and only stabbed my fingers a dozen times). So I'm now debating if I want to get more supplies and continue that hobby. Only this time, I'll purchase the finger guards!

OMGosh, LilyAnn! That's so scary! Glad you got in and tested so quickly and are getting the care you need.

Michelle, made me think of you right away. So funny that "Melissa" said that years later.

Syl, I'm so sorry you're still having issues at work.

Shana, how wonderful to have so many people turn out. Hope he knew how treasured he was.

What fun stories of names! I didn't know I'd spark that with my reply. :)

Lily Ann, I'm glad you are all right for the moment and hope your health improves.

Shana, wow, that is a well-attended funeral! I'm glad you got to help.

Sylfie, I wish I could lift all your work troubles off of you and fling them away! So not fair to you.

Me, I'm ambling along, not accomplishing a whole lot. Hubby's birthday was Friday, so we went out as a family plus Eren's boyfriend. We're having his cake today though, because the last few days have just been so busy for him. We're almost at Eren's last week before they go back to school. We'll get to see them again at spring break and Easter.

How is everyone's weekends going/have gone?

It has been a wild week, I have sort of lost track of myself...

Grandson Bruce starts a learning intervention program tomorrow. He is three and has speech issues. He can say vowels, plus M and B and sometimes N and P, but that is all. Kitty is "ee-ee," for example, and Daddy is "a-a." He can count all his numbers and say the alphabet, but everything is pronounced in vowels. He knows his numbers up to 100 visually and does all kinds of fun stuff. He draws quite well, and writes his letters and numbers, but he cannot pronounce things.

HOWEVER, the program is from 12 to 3:30 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Steven and Nessa are off Monday, but they need W-Th-Fri covered. Of course, I volunteered. I wish they were closer. It is 45min to an hour drive each way. I will have to watch him all day because he can't go to the sitters, which means 9 am to 7 pm. I am trying to reschedule the appointments I have already booked. It came up rather suddenly.

Husband Rand has been very sick. He gets bad cases of vertigo and is in the middle of a particularly bad spell. This is bad timing, though. We are taking down Christmas and he can't help, which means I am taking down Christmas.

Every day feels so busy. I need a nap :)
