Anyone considering the Keto Diet in the new year?

I have been following it pretty strictly for 3 1/2 months now. Have to say it is both one of the easiest diets I have done ( never have to feel hungry and being impatient for the next meal) and most boring- life without the grain food group is pretty limiting. I have lost 18 pounds and nearing my goal weight. Will have to start researching how to maintain the keto lifestyle and maintain a weight as I really do like the additional benefits besides the weight loss. Am anxious to see if it really did have a positive impact on my cholesterol levels as many articles suggest. May have to splurge on a blood test rather than wait another 6 months for my yearly check-up.

My hubby and I have not done Keto, but we have done Paleo in the past and are considering going back to it for the new year. We lost weight, but more than that, we felt so much better! I'm diabetic and I don't take care of myself like I should. Maybe this will just push me in the right direction :)

I am not real familiar with the Paleo diet but I know a lot of their recipes are keto friendly (and a lot of keto recipes I have encountered are acceptable paleo). Keto is "supposed" to be very helpful with type 2 diabetes but if you are taking medications be sure to consult with your doctor. I don't have any real health issues so I kind of plunged into it without medical advice. The "feeling better" aspect is so much tastier than the sugar cookies I couldn't indulge in this holiday season! I think that is the main reason I have been able to stay successful with it.

I am considering it. I was doing so great before Thanksgiving, and then it all fell apart. The whole starting over thing sucks so kudos to you for maintaining through the holidays!

I tend to rely a lot on YouTube videos and have hopped around all over the place. Some of my favorite resources are:

https://www.ketoconnect.net/ - They are very actively involved with the keto lifestyle - offer programs, have published cook books, have an active blog and very active youtube channel and lots of recipes

https://ketodietapp.com/Blog - A rather new discovery for me - lots of recipes but also informational articles. The primary blog poster/app developer turned to a low carb lifestyle for health reasons. A lot of recipes are geared toward both keto and paleo. I have also seen several recipes alterations to accomodate those who need a non dairy version. Also a youtube channel.

https://www.ketogenicforums.com/ Also a new resource I found when searching possible causes for a return to the constant fatique I had prior to beginning the keto diet. For the first couple months I felt fantastic - more energy, seldom fatiqued and seldom had the desire to nap. Reading the discussions helped me narrow it down to electrolyte imbalances and also an increased use of artificial sweetners. When I first started I tried to really limit their use but discovering some truly tasty "sweet" treats I had begun indulge more and more often in foods with artificial sweetners. I have cut back quite a bit on those "sweet" treats and the fatiqued feeling has diminished again. Since it is a forum, there is TONS of info and questions to sort through.

There are so many other blogs with recipes. I was surprised by the number and also the number of keto related youtube channels. If I am curious about how to make a keto version of something, I just do a google search and get several different possiblities.

The first two resources, of course, are hoping to make money. They offer special meal plan/recipe programs and cookbooks. I have resisted the temptation. There are so many free resources for recipes - even from those selling cookbooks - that I see no need to buy a book because it seems most recipe books (keto or otherwise) have more recipes I consider unappealing than ones I find interesting to try. I am pretty boring in my eating habits - never was fond of cooking- and like to keep it simple.

I am sure there are many other quality resources out there- - just not enough time to find and study them all. In the beginning, I did do a search for free kindle keto books and gained some decent background/starter information from them. Also Netflix has a documentary on a low carb/ high fat diet and the impact it had on some different medical issues - The Magic Pill. I found it interesting.

me, me!! I started on Oct. 21, but I wasn't doing it correctly, I was way off on my macros and had too much fat and calories... I was basically drinking about a quart of heavy whipping cream a day! lol...

I wasn't losing losing weight, but thankfully I wasn't gaining either. After Thanksgiving I really made an effort to cut out heavy whipping cream for coffee. It was difficult, but i have to think of the benefits. I did "cheat" here/there this past week with Christmas and New Year, but overall I think I'm still in ketosis.

All in all, I've lost about 10 pounds...NO exercise! But now, I'm going to really try and focus and will start hiking/walking more. I used to be really good about getting my 10k steps, but i
t has been a super busy past couple months.

I went from 159 to 148. From a tight size 10 to a comfortable size 8!!

I started because my mom has been having lots of health issues lately, mainly from being overweight. I don't want to go down that path. Her way of life is difficult now, she can't go out, walk too much, etc.. Also, I refused to buy bigger clothes. It just seemed that I kept gaining weight every day!!

I did go hiking the other day and it was much easier going up the hill minus the 10 pounds!! woohoo!!

Yes! My 18 pound loss is also without the help of exercise. Love that I feel better, don't have to exercise to see progress and seldom have to go/feel hungry as with other diets I have tried.

I have started walking more often - more as a medical recommendation. I am supposed to be doing 20 minute continuous weight bearing activity because of osteoporosis. Apparently the steady amount of time is suppose to trigger the bones to create more bone cells. My dog loves the medical recommendation! I am considering buying an 8 pound vest to wear during the walks in hopes it might promote the walking benefits more. Seriously need to work on some light resistance/weight training for my upper body strength. . . age and a slower life style have taken a toll. I am approaching my desired weight but I am soooooo far from being considered "fit"

Think I will take a break right now and "play" with my lil' 2 pound dumbbells!

That's a good idea. My mom has osteoporosis, I'm afraid I might end up with that, too. I also have arthritis and sciatica, lol.. I'm just a mess. I didn't know that about creating more bone cells, that's interesting! And good idea about the 8lb vest, don't need to hold anything. I have ankle weights, maybe I should use those next time.

I'm type 2 diabetic and my doctor's all recommend Keto/Paleo. Because I'm also lactose intolerant, I follow Paleo (Keto allows dairy) because it's less substitutions. I always feel better and my blood sugar is more stable when I'm good about following it, but I agree, it gets so insanely boring. I love vegetables, but some days, really, I look at lettuce and think, I'm just so tired of chewing. lol

If you’re a Facebook user, this is a good group. Mostly inspirational.... people post before/after pictures and tell their success stories- like getting off meds and other health benefits. Recipes are often posted as well. You can also join an email list which sends a free weekly meal plan, but I never use it, lol. I like the group for all the inspiration.

I am not doing Keto but my dietician has told me to cut down carbs and increase fat. I now make lots of Keto recipes to achieve this. I got told this because I was having massive energy dips where I felt like I was going to pass out. My body had trouble processing sugars and carbs since having my oesophagus removed 3 years ago. Since increasing my fats and lowering my carbs my energy has remained more balanced.

This is SO interesting to me! I am basically the complete opposite. I have done Starch Solution the past few months and have lost 25 pounds. Basically I eat super duper low fat and all plant based. I did low carb a few years ago and lost weight, but I didn't feel well and didn't like limiting carbs at all LOL.

Thanks for your comments Lindsay and Kelley. I think I have pretty much reached the end of my weight loss. It has been pretty stable the past couple months but still stick with the Keto diet just because I don't want to go back to the chronic fatigue I had on a high carb diet. I still have an occasional tired sluggish day but have learned that it may be due to low electrolytes so I drink water with potassium, magnesium and sea salt. It seems to help. There sure are a lot of foods I miss though - mostly fruits and the higher carb vegetables.

Hi everyone. The last time I was here was in 2015 and at that time I was about 75 lbs heavier. In late 2016 I went on the keto diet, lost about 50 lbs throughout the next yr but my cholesterol still wasn't where it should be (there is a subset of people that apparently their cholesterol just doesn't budge on keto, that was me) so my doctor suggested paleo (he is) meaning, cut out the dairy, eat less meat than keto and increase my carbs with more plant based meals. I lost the next 25 lbs, the cholesterol is super good now and I feel great. I think all the low carb plans are good, you just have to find the right one for you. I went from a size 16 down to a 3 which I never thought would happen. I don't count calories, just eat the right foods (for me) and get a bit of exercise (jog a 3-4 times a week with my dog). I've maintained the weight for about 1.5 yrs and not having any problem with this way of eating.

I've done Paleo in the past and now keto, and I'm really glad with the results and not feeling hungry

That is one of my favorite aspects of the Keto diet. I was "dieting" but didn't have to worry about counting calories and feeling hungry until it was time to eat again. Usually my quick easy go to food when needing a quick in-between meals snack is a chunk of cheese.

My daughter went on the Keto diet last year I think and her max weight loss to date has been about 69 pounds, which she says is like losing the weight of a small child off your body. She has a Keto blog page on Facebook where she has lots of her personal weight loss pictures but also points people to very good Keto recipes that may be helpful along your Keto journey. I'm very much into healthy eating and try all different kinds of diets. I read, read, read about diets all of the time and after many years, I've finally found a manner of eating that seems to be working wonderfully. I might say it's a more vegetarian/keto style of diet. I might indulge in some pasta, potatoes and starch in very small amounts and only a few times a week. After reading extensively about the Keto diet, I just couldn't get into the calorie counting and fasting. I get so darn sick when I fast and it seems like my body is telling me, that this is not a good idea. Just like when I tried vegan. My goodness, my stomach hurt so, so bad I couldn't take it. I eat mostly fresh food and equally as important as diet, I exercise very regularly. Diet alone just isn't enough. Especially, as ya get older! Hehehe...I totally recommend trying out any kind of healthful living.

I have adapted a lot of keto based foods into my routine. For example my favorites are bacon mac n cheese, but with cauliflower substituted and my spinach topped basted eggs.

WOW, you are a walking miracle! I know this because my sister had that same surgery about 10 years ago and at that time survival was low. Her operation at Mayo in Jax was done by a teaching surgeon and they had a bunch of them watching. And you are right to be careful...And you prob know not to drink water on an empty stomach.

This is me! I have been plant based for 3 years now and I feel GREAT! I don't think about anything other than eating plant based foods... no planning or counting or balancing, etc. I have so many cancers in my family and insane heart disease rates in my family and my doctor recommended it 5 years ago and I took the plunge 100% a couple years after that. I will never go back.

Thanks for all of these resources. Hubby and I have commited to a high-protien, low carb, low sugar diet. We've both lost weight and are maintaining.... but I would like like to lose more. I've been upping my physical activity (I try to walk 2-4 miles a day). It's nice to see others on their journeys to better health. :)

I have done keto diet for 6 months but it did not work as it should. I don't know what was the reason. Does anyone have any ideas about some other easy to follow diets?
