Which.....?

...scrapbooking technique would you like to be better at?

For myself, I would love to be better at arty LOs, I would love to become more skilled in the use of masks and blending. Even though I have never paper scrapped, my digi LOs are pretty much mostly paper style in appearance (which I love, and that style was my first love). Way back when I started scrapping, it was important to keep it "real"..ie anything that was not possible on a real paper scrapped page should not be done on a digi scrapped page. I think that these days, greater artistic licence is acceptable and we can do things "because we can" in digi form. I like the freedom of that, but I still find myself going back to my comfort zone.

Tell me your story.....

Jill, I think my story is similar to yours as I would like to improve on my arty style which I do dabble in a little.
But, I was a paper scrapper before turning to the "Dark Side" of digital scrapbooking. So my pages tend to lean more toward realistic. I prefer to not use very deep shadowing when creating clusters and I know that the deep shadows on others pages does look good but I just cannot do it!

Haha, Anne-Marie - "Dark Side!" I love it.

I would like to get better at artsy, too. I love the artsy ones I have attempted, but I need to work on the more freeform and funky ones. Mostly to free up my artistic senses... such as they are!

For me, it would be wanting to get better at extractions, especially hair and dog fur. I need to watch some videos. I can do a basic extraction but would really like to get better at fine detail extracting.

BTW....I use a lot of blending modes, brushwork, masking, etc so I'd be happy to answer any questions or help with techniques. I don't mind at all.

Minimalism is another style I would like to master...love the look of minimalistic LOs (Sylvia comes to mind) but I am compelled to keep adding a bit here and a bit there, I just cannot seem to stop. Of course it must be the fault of the GS designers...if they didn't put so many gorgeous goodies into their kits, maybe I would have half a chance to minimalise ...maybe.

I would just like to be able to scrap without using a template, LOL. It feels like I'm cheating when I do. :D The thing is, I don't really like my "style" when I go it alone. I used to scrap alone just fine, but that was before my digiscrapping hiatus. I admire all you ladies and what you do.

I never used templates until I came to GS, I thought the same as you Ane. Now I love them and almost every page I do at least STARTS with a template..often the LOs take on a life of their own and finish up nothing like the design I started with.

I love the work you all do with templates - it takes me so much longer to create with a template, so I don't often use them. I buy a lot though haha.

What a fun thread. I would love to learn how to do the artsy LO as well but then again, learning how to extract those fine details would be neat too. I am a self taught PSE user so there is a lot I would like to learn to do quicker and better. Maybe a video from Rae doing her artsy pages would be fun to watch and learn from!!

There are so many of us stating we would like to learn more artsy style so maybe one of our lovely designers might like to take up the challenge to host a challenge and provide an artsy template to get us started. I have seen elsewhere templates with paint splatter type layers that you can either recolour or clip papers to.

I tried a video desktop a few yrs ago and it was pretty lame LOL. I didn't know how to speed it up or edit it well so it was a mess. If I can figure out a free or relatively cheap windows video program to use I might try it again and show you all how I do my artsy pages. if you have any recommendations for a video program, let me know, I'll look into it.

um probably artsy & also journalling - I have never been good at it, mind you I could probably talk the leg off a piano but it just does nto translate when I try & journal.

I love extraction, when I owned my scrap & tube store I used to extract the artist images for them to sell individually, its just time consuming

I want to be able to do an artsy grungy style - I always keep coming up with something like this - it is pretty, but not as artistic as I would like it to be (not linked, no need to comment):

This LO jumped out at me from the gallery thumbs this morning Lynnie, I haven't opened the full gallery yet and didn't realise it was yours until I read this thread. It is stunning!

For those asking about arty is it like this page of mine that is a little grungy? I do enjoy playing with paint splats and brushes and using masks to clip plain papers to and then blend them a little.

I just commented on this in the gallery before finding it here, Anne-Marie, wondering at the time was it prompted by this thread. I love your work with the paint, the brushes and masks. And yes, those are some of the techniques I was wanting to improve on. The vision to create something arty is also difficult for me, I look at gorgeous arty pages and wonder...how did they even THINK to do that in the first place.

Jill, just as a tip for creating arty type pages..... pretend you are a child again and just add layers of colours and paints that you feel goes with the mood of the page your want to create. I have started to look in the store and so far the best products to use for pages like mine are by Lauries Scraps - kits like these that you could easily clips papers or colour layers to and blend them in more etc. I am sure if I keep searching there will be products from other designers that would work well for this style of digital art.

Searching through the store I found something to add to my wish list that I think would work great for art journal type pages.

Now Lynnie, I am not sure I really wanted to thankyou for this link as now I want them all !
I did not think of searching under the word " doodles".

Let me further tempt you!
Graffiti packs

Most of them are probably under doodles, but they eliminate some of the doodly things we might not want for art journaling :)

If you search for the exact phrase "Art journal" under the advanced search, it brings back this:
https://store.gingerscraps.net/search.php?mode=search&page=1

I think some of the designers are stretching by saying these are for art journaling, but it brings back some lovely suggestions!

Thank you Lynnie for all your great suggestions.... now I just need to find a rich relative to leave me some money so I can do some shopping.... :no
