What do you do with old scrapping materials?

Hi ladies/fellow scrapbookers!

I have what some could consider a controversial question...

What do you do with old scrapping materials you used to use frequently in the past? Do you hang on to it in hopes of using it again in the future (and force yourself to create hard drive space for it) or remove it if you've used it excessively? Since this is digital content, it's hard to justify "weeding" old kits based on condition because digital stuff never physically deteriorates (or dries up, etc).

For context, I have a ton of scrapping materials from amazing designers who sadly have passed away over the years OR the kit was created well over ten years ago and the designers' styles have improved over the years. What would you do with this type of content? I have kits from some designers (including some who currently sell here who sold old kits under a different design name), but the style is definitely looking 2007.

TLDR: Do you "weed out" old kits or file them away for specific uses?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! ❤️

At this point I haven't gotten rid of any digital content, but have also considered weeding things out. Scrapbooking takes LOTS of digital storage so it would make sense to get rid of things I no longer use, but I never know when I might need something, so I keep it all. ;)
When I first started digital scrapping I relied on almost only freebies from all over the place and some of those are styles I am pretty sure I will never use again so probably should just get rid of them, but it also takes a lot of time to sort through things.
One thing I have started doing is getting rid of all of those "extra" files that come with kits, the designer TOU files and all things that are more "advertisements". I also don't keep any of the extra files that might come with templates, I only keep the tif and psd files and delete the rest. I will never use a page file and I don't need all of the extra jpgs that come with so many templates as I can always open the template the copy the element from there.

I have an external hard drive for "retired" kits and an external hard drive for "current" kits. That way, I don't accidentally grab a kit to use for a challenge and then realize after the page is created that the kit I grabbed doesn't qualify (yup... I've done that a couple of times). So if a designer moves to another site, I move those kits to the other EHD. That way I can still access the kits, but it helps me keep organized.

If its a case where I feel the kit is an older style and the designer has greatly improved, or my personal style has changed, then yes... I will go ahead and *gasp* hit the delete button. But honestly, that's pretty rare. However, I do find that I'm super picky about what kits I download and save from the beginning. When I first started, I grabbed every freebie, every FB hop item I could find. And now, I'm much more selective! LOL!

I have never weeded anything in my life, even though there are kits that are just so awful from the early days. I don't know why I can't hit the delete button, I know I will never use them....

Some of the older kits (pre 2009) from my collection have made their way to a separate external hard drive. That way I can find them easily if I ever need to use them again.

This last weekend I just went through a bunch of files and did some deleting of old freebies or incomplete daily downloads! Sometimes I kept a unique element or journal cards or templates. I went through years past of kits by retired GS designers (I miss some of them!) and put those in a different folder so I don't grab those to do the challenges. I am thankful some of my favs are still here at GS!

I do the exact same thing. I've collected for so long. Now, as I download I weed ads, PNGs, PAGE files, etc. Who needs 20 TOUs from the same designer?!? I save by designer so one TOU is in the designers folder.

Great discussion and ideas. I have not deleted many "old" kits even if I don't really care for the outdated style and I have alot of freebies and blog hops that I have never used but still hang on to them. I also delete the extra's and TOU's in the kit as I sort by designer orgainized by store. BUT...now that I have retired, I have set my mind to cleaning out the old and that goes far beyond just scrapbooking stuff. I will be busy this winter doing just that.

great discussion. I ponder this same question. As I use ACDSee for organization and can see at a glance I have 5,000 different flowers and know I will not use half or more why don't I just delete the ones I don't like.

Girl, I hoard them! I have been digital scrapbooking for about 15 years now. I have everything!! Now, most of the older items are in "storage". But I have actually been surprised how often I go back and dig something out to scrap with. Not something that ends up in the gallery, maybe. But that helps me complete a book.

I have an issue with thinking "I might need that in the future". And it isn't just with scrapbooking supplies. haha
