Scrapping "Non-traditional" pictures

I have a problem. I tend to scrap a lot of "Non Traditional" pictures. Most of the time I find my self scrapping pictures of race cars, ships (sail boats, destroyers, subs and such), camping trips and those kind of odd things. Not a lot of people pictures.

With the odd things I scrap I find that a lot of the more frilly embellishments won't work with them. I mean my Eagle Scout son would shoot me some pretty nasty looks if I put flowers and ribbons on his scrapbook pages for his Boy Scouts, Sea scouts or OA pictures. No room for much of them on my racing pages either.

Does anyone one else have this problem? I mean I love the kits on here. I have bought a lot of them but I feel a lot of the embellishments in them are more frilly then I would ever use. No flowers on my Pearl Harbor pictures.

Guess I'm just having a pity party here.

I can't imagine anyone having a problem with that, after all they are your layouts and you should do what you like.

I have some non-traditional pages: off-roading, motorcycles, and a boy stuff. My thought process is... if it's outside, outside has flowers, throw a few - not a lot - in. My Midway page has a few, along with other nautical elements...

This one has a few flowers too but they aren't froo-froo flowers and I like the added dash of color...

...but that's just my way, you can do yours anyway you choose - do what makes you happy and don't worry about what others think!

Thank you for showing me how I can use more "frilly" on my pages. I love your work. You have inspired me.

There are so many styles that can be accomplished using any kit. I scrapped Pearl Harbor and many historical places. I often do not use flowers on boy pages either. Pocket scrapping style works too.

I just wish I had a nice Remembrance Day kit or Canadian military kit to scrap all the Canadian military memorials and battlefields. American kits just don't work. :(

I have a hard time scrapping my car/racing/cruise night photos too.

I dont one think there is anything wrong with ribbon on boy pages ribbon and stars go together well. I use stars a lot. Even the odd flower gets on my sons pages.

Pearl harbour our I would have to look at what I did. It was before I found GS and I really don't remember.

Because I just scrapped with it...Aimee Harrison Designs- Heroic collection comes to mind.

go with colors. go with word art.

Thank for the suggestion. I guess that's part of the problem - I can't find a kit with the colours and word art I'm looking for! I need rich forest greens, maple leaf reds, CADPAT tans, bright and dulled golds, etc. I need wordart that says things like "Ubique", "honour" (note the "u" in there), "Vigilamus Pro Te", etc. Everything in the "military" category here at GS is far too USA-centric to work. There are no poppies there, no poppy wreaths, no maple leafs, etc.

I find that a lot. Maybe it is having only boys, maybe it is that I am a minimalist at heart, maybe it is because I am soooo not girly myself. I do a lot of pages with not many flowers. I think that is why I tend to gravitate towards "themed" kits. I use those elements like most people seem to use flowers. Stars too.

Here are some of my recent ones!

This one has zero elements. Seems weird, but I like it.

Looking through some of my LOs, I realize I that if I use flowers, I often tuck them in a corner. Then again, I do that with many of my elements, I like for my pictures to be the focus and for the elements not to take away from them!

Diane, I love your layouts. I'm so not a "froo Froo" girl. Not in my real life or in my scrapping. I too like a clean line and minimal "extras" on the pages. I'm finding that I can sneak a few more frills into my pages with the digital stuff. I drop it in and am able to play with it. I'm not stuck with buying pieces I hope I can use.

My boys aren't into my crafting and the youngest is now 20.
Frills don't work for them so I use my little Chihuahua Kiki as she is the only girl I have lol
