Scrapbooking basics

Okay so I have PSE11 (I think).....Since I do hybrid most of the time, I don't get to scrapbook much. I really want to put both my boys together a book with stuff from when they were younger to now....I have a old school book with actual photos that I never finished that I need to finish.

So my question is....what is the easiest way to get started and finish in a somewhat reasonable time? I think pocket scrapping would be easier. Like start to finish the steps for a "quick" layout. Do you always do layers and do you always shadow. I don't know if Im making any sense at all....lol. :(

Thanks in advance

You're making sense. I didn't know anything when I first started digiscrapping, I kind of just watched what everyone did and asked questions here and there, just like you're doing.

Pocket pages are a quick way to get going. The layout is already chosen for you and you just have to plop in pictures and paper. Me, I normally scrap with templates because that way the layout is already decided for me. I just have to replace the papers and elements on the template with stuff from the kit I'm using.

With PSE you can't really get away from layers because each photo/paper/element comes into a PSE document as its own layer. You wouldn't have to shadow but I think you would be a lot happier with the end result. With pocket style scrapping which has several layers devoted to paper like products (paper, photos, journal cards, word bits) you could set the shadow for one of those layers, copy the shadow style then select all similar layers and Paste the style- poof- lots of shadows done. Then you would only need to make shadows for thicker element types or those that in real life would be farther away from the bottom. For the type of project you would like to do- pocket or blocked style would be a good place to start because those typically are geared to preserving lots of photo memories. Also learning photo editing in PSE can allow you to salvage some less than perfect out of the camera photo captures.

Try a few different things, find what works for you and enjoy! I don't use templates much. I do use them, particularly when I am feeling uninspired, but I often find it is quicker for me to scrap without templates. So try using templates, try without, try using templates for idea, trying using other layouts for ideas. Just do a page and decide if it felt good that way, then follow your 'style!'

Oh good....Sometimes I just ramble and don't even understand myself...lol. I think I will do just that and start posting in the Gallery in hopes to get some good feedback!! Thanks for you help :)

Thanks Rochelle....that sounds like some great info. I'm not sure how to copy and paste a style.....but I think I have an idea. I may try it tonight and see what happens....be ready, I'm sure I will have more questions :)

I have tried templates once or twice, but I tend to delete a lot of the things that are there because I'm not 100% sure about clustering!
Thanks so much for the tips....I really really need to get on this. I have all the stuff and the programs, there is NO reason I shouldn't be doing this for my kids.

Yes, I believe pocket scrapping is the easiest way to do this since they require few to none elements, just photos and cards (or a card where you type their funny sayings or words) and you're all set.

What an exciting project. You know that you have lots of help from here. Post a layout and ask for advise. It takes years to come up with what works for you in scrapbooking. Your style will evolve over time and it gets easier and easier to create a layout that you love. I remember back in 2009 working on a page for days. Now I look at it and could probably do it again in under an hour. Hahaha. I also spent lots of time browsing galleries to find what I liked and what I wanted to learn to do. I'm excited to see your pages.
