Purging kits...

I haven't been a digi scrapper too long, just the past 5 years. In this time I've accumulated almost .5TB worth of kits! WOW!! Needless to say, it was time for some serious purging!!

I'm pretty much exclusively GS so I'm going to SLOWLY purge non-GS designers this summer.
I just deleted 30GB, mostly from 2013....and it felt pretty good!! But I still have a long, long way! haha!

How about you guys... how often do you purge your kits??

I just recently did my first purge, and I started in 2011. When I first started I collected a ton of freebies, and I also did a couple "Buy My Stores", and so I recently went through and got rid of things I knew I would never use. Other than that, I have kept most things. I should probably do another purge again in the near future, but I think I am a digital scrapbook hoarder lol

I can relate.

I have a 1T drive dedicated to digi. At present there is only 370g free! So that means, 630 g of stuff??? AND I recently went thru using easy duplicate finder and deleted about 80g of duplicates. I need to run that duplicate finder again.

One thing that helps save space is to have your templates as TIFF instead of psd. I also delete any unnecessary items in kits.

I just had to upgrade to an 8TB hard drive(s) :36_11_20:

I need to purge again, but I just purged down from 5TB to 3TB (another 2.5TB is Photos since 2002)

So I have about 2.5TB left of space. Definitely need to work on that.

I just started in October and I'm already purging. Those freebies I started with. Bits and pieces that don't go with anything.

I try and purge as I accumulate. If there are elements I don't care for or never plan on using, I delete them right away. This helps me save a ton of space. I also tend to not use alphas (unless I totally love them) because they are just too annoying and time consuming to use so I tend delete them quickly too. I have been digi scrapping since 2007 so I have WAY too much stuff. I recently went through and threw out a tons of kits that were just too dated. The problem with being on a CT is that you save everything, even if it is a kit you weren't totally in love with from the get-go. I am trying to be better at tossing some of the kits out. Although I have a 12 year old who really wants to learn to scrap so I might hang on to a few kits just so she has some stuff to play and practice with.

I never knew that michi!! I always delete the pngs, page, and tiffs from the template packs..I might have to change my system.

I have known only 2 digi homes. I still have all my previous digi home kits on an ehd...(but I have the previews still on my laptop...just in case I need to find something:) ). I think I can put those previous home products happily to bed now that GS has become such a big part of my life. I don't think I will be using any of those things again:). I haven't purged anything so far since Ive been here, other than the template files that I mentioned earlier but the time is fast approaching I think:)

Jill the TIFF settings I use are:
LZW; Interleaved; IBM PC; zip

I also save my layered scrapbook LO's as TIFF too instead of psd. Makes a huge difference.

I once wrote a tutorial on saving hard drive space- another site years ago, now closed. I will look to see if I still have it around.

More tips off the top of my head:
1. When using a template, delete the bottom layer that says background [because you are going to place a bg paper there anyhow]
2. If a template is really big, clear the layer styles. All those add up.
3. Keep only 1 preview of a kit. No need for many of different views.
4. If a Tiff template, do not need the preview and folder as you can 'see' it.
5. Alphas or Alpha sheets- not both
6. I place all the contents of a kit into the folder and then delete the extra folders.
7. After pages are printed, I even delete the Tiffs.

You are very brave! I don't delete any of my layouts as sometimes I get the urge to tweak stuff before I print them.

I have been clearing out my stash, one thing that has helped me is that in my finished TIF files, I record what kit I used. That way I can do a quick search via finder to see if a kit has been used or not. If it hasn't and I don't like it, then away it goes.

I've also been sorting through old pictures & videos. Don't really need 10 copies of the same photo on my hard drive :)

AFTER printing I delete the TIFFs...
Most definitely do not need multiple copies of the same photo on the same hard drive.

I am new to TIF, so I was wondering how you record this information on the TIF and what is finder?

In photoshop: File>File Information > and options to record what was used on the LO.

When I have a template up, I drag the paper, elements etc onto the layer straight from the folder where the kit is. The data on that element is listed in the layers panel. It records however the designer named it. I will try to make a screen shot.

Michi, I have used what you have shared in the past for another site where that information on a saved layout can actually be accessed in their gallery which saves having to type out the credits all the time.

I might start using your suggestion of only keeping TIF for templates as PSDs do take up a lot of space so thankyou for that handy tip.

These are GREAT tips. I have one more...when you make a layout and if you save a non-flattened version, make one more layer ALL WHITE on the very top. Do this to dozens of files and you will be amazed at the saved space. As a designer, I do this to all my previews.

Thank you so much :)

I feel your pain... similar situation... But I have yet to do a purge. I always think I am going to but then I get overwhelmed at the thought of going through all my kits. :(

I totally agree!! Even if I figure I might never use it, there is a little voice in the back of my head saying... you might need it in 25 years! lol.. That's what I've been purging lately, lots of freebies, like QP or a cluster.. even if I don't have the collection, but it was free, ha!

I generally delete a bunch of the template files, except for the pngs since I scrap in Word, I can't use those other files anyway.

WOW Michelle! I think you won this round! lol... 8TB, wow!

I'm with you on the alphas, especially if they provide both individual and the whole sheet.

We are so happy to have you here, Jill!! Thankfully, the other places I used to visit, some of the designers are here as well!

That's so good! I used to be hoarder, but lately, especially with reorganizing and remodeling our house... I have been getting rid of lots of stuff! With the remodel, we gained lots of open space in our house, but lost lots of storage space. So now I have been just keeping the things we use on a frequent basis...

I haven't had the chance to go through pic/vid... but I have been getting rid of them on my phone since we have a bunch of major events lately. Even though I know the picture/vid is on a hard drive, I love to look back on some of the memories while on the phone or to show someone. *sigh* I just have to sing... Let It Go... Let It Go....

I feel your pain... similar situation... But I have yet to do a purge. I always think I am going to but then I get overwhelmed at the thought of going through all my kits. :(

I agree Cindi! It takes so much time. I think I spent a good 2 hours deciding which ones to purge. I get easily side-tracked, lol... and end up looking at other things while going through the HD. lol

At the risk of sending anyone into fits, I delete all copies of a layout except the JPEG ... BEFORE I even print! (I do however, copy it to a huge flash drive that gets put in a fireproof safe). Once a layout is finished then it's done in my world - I don't have time to revisit layouts and if there's an error then it shows I'm human. :D

Yup, that's it! Saved my butt a few times :)
