One Little Word

Does anyone do this? Choose one word to focus on for the year?
I hadn't heard of this until a couple of years ago. I've never done it, but have considered it. I guess I just feel like there are so many things I could focus on that it's hard to choose just one thing. :(

So, do you choose a word? If so, what is your word for 2014? And, what are your plans for focusing on it?

Last year was the first year that I did it, and wow! I am planning to do it again this year. I take my word and it is the cover page for my scrapbook for that year. I am leaning toward the word GREATNESS for next year. What about you?

Mine is "Capture" :D

I've even done a few layouts to highlight the thought.

This year was "Improvement" and I didn't do that great towards the end of the year, but I did get better with my video editing hehe :D

I have done this the past 2 years. 1st word was balance. I had a stressful job and I balanced my world by changing jobs. This year was organize. I made some great efforts so I am ok with that. I have not decided this year's yet. Maybe empower as I need to empower myself to get back on my exercise routine. I need to empower others in my life as well.

This is a great idea Tammy! I think my word for this year might actually be "Focus." There are a few things in my life that I need to focus on this year to reach my goals, both personally and professionally. So I guess that's my word! lol

I've not heard of this before. Sounds interesting.

Michelle, it's something that Ali Edwards started - you choose a word to focus on for the year. She even has a class at Big Picture Classes.

I've been contemplating it for this year, but I'm not sure which word to choose... right now, my thoughts are "focus" "listen" "give" "cherish" "refresh" ...this is why I've never done it!! I have a hard time choosing!

I know several who have done it but I never have. I'm thinking about doing it this year though and my word is going to be very simple.... ME. It's time for me to take care of me, time for me to make me happy, time for me to make me healthier, etc. The past 12 years I haven't paid much attention to myself due to suddenly becoming a widow and moving my kids and I across several states and raising them, etc. My focus has been them and now one is grown with his own family and the other is 13 going on 14 so much more independent. It's time for me now (not 100% of course since DD is still at home and needs me but at least 50% about me ;) )

I think your word sounds very appropriate after all you've been through.

Well, I decided on my one little word... it's "FORWARD."
I did a layout that I'll post on Thursday :)

A challenge based on this would be great. After reading this thread and thinking about it over the last few days, I'm still torn between serenity and acceptance.

I wasn't going to do this, but as I sit here thinking about the New Year dawning upon us, the word "Organize" popped into my head. So many things I want to accomplish in 2014 and they will all be more easy to obtain if I just take some to organize a few basic things in my life.

Those are two really good ones. I'm curious to know which you chose.

I've done this for several years now. The first was in 2011; I was going through some rather serious issues that had the potential to be quite disastrous so I chose Persevere. It was a good choice. I survived and outlasted the people who wanted to see me fail. In 2012 I was hoping for things to get better and chose Optimism. That was wasted effort. The things in my life I had control over didn't get worse, but none of the things outside of my control that I really wanted to improve either didn't or deteriorated. So for this year I chose Rebuild. That one was a minor success; I did follow through on my decision to certify in my nursing specialty and my relationships with several family members have gotten closer. I'm trying hard to decide what 2014 should be. I'm feeling like it should be Resolve.

I was talking about it with my husband. On one hand, can one achieve serenity without acceptance? On the other hand, serenity feels like a more positive word. Plus, serenity is a prettier word. And maybe you can achieve serenity without total acceptance. Maybe its just an attitude about where your life is, but without necessarily accepting the things you want/need to change. I think I'm going with Serenity. Bonus, Firefly :) Scifi fans know what I mean.

Jan, it sounds like you've done well with the things that you had control over. I chose Forward for a similar reason-2013 was a foundation year. 2014 is time to move ahead. Resolve is a strong word. I'm hoping for the best for you!

I've done this the last couple of years as well. It's easier for me to focus on a word or theme then a big group on resolutions. My theme for this year is going to be ROUTINE. It sounds odd, but I'm at a place in my life where I need routines in my every day for my sanity and for my kids progress. And it is NOT something that comes easy to me. I am NOT a routine type of person. So that's what I'm focusing on. Routines in our finances (like budgeting), routines in our house cleaning, routines in our school day, routine time to take care of my self. Routines.

Glad you asked, I have thought about it for a few years and every year I end up not doing it, but I really like the idea.

Last year, 2013, i didn't because I took on two P365's, crazy, I know!

This year I didn't because my word is "Focus" and the meaning is to simplify life, cut back on unnecessary things…both time wise and 'stuff/purchases' wise. Then use that extra time and energy to focus on the things that I really want in my life that I say I don't have time for.

So, in the end, doing the One Little Word project would be adding a commitment instead of cutting back, so I didn't sign up again. But I am still kind of doing it on my own, you know?

LOL

I didn't sign up for the project either, Jen, just something I thought I would do on my own. I'm like you - I definitely don't need to add anything to my list of things to do this year :)
Focus is a great word for the year. Best of luck with it!

Y'all have come up with really good words and I can relate to most of them. So does one scrap pages weekly that incorporate the word?
For 2012, I did a project 52. For my own personal goal I took all the photos on manual settings on my camera and on each page it said....thru my lens.
i think I will try a p 52 again for this year. I want it camera related yet I have a lot on my plate, so perhaps something along the line of just life. Or moments.

I did a layout with my word for the year - I browsed Pinterest for ideas. There is a class that Ali Edwards has on her blog, but I'm not going to do it...I don't need to add anything else to my year ;) I will probably just do layouts as they are warranted throughout the year.

Because my word is "Capture", I'll do a month-in-review of it :D That means pictures, journaling, maybe a QR code to a video, etc :D

Ummm…:blush I thought I knew what QR was until I read this…how does/would it relate to a scrap page?

I remember when Chelle wrote that tutorial. I did something wrong, will try again.
