A gal i talk to on facebook recommended this site for learning how to digital scrap. I am getting super frustrated there is so much to learn! In the last 24 hours I think I spent about 14 of them, watching youtube videos, and i do exactly what they are doing, and can NOT get the layers to work correctly. I am using the trial elements for 30 days (I believe it is version 18?) but a guy I work with said he has elements 9 I can have. Not sure if that will be compatible on my computer even, as I just updated my mac. I just want to create and not having ANY LUCK AT ALL!!!! I don't want to go back to scissors and glue sticks... HELLLLLLLLLLLp.... :)

hi there Tracye and welcome to Gingerscraps. I don't use Elements so don't know how to help you but I am sure glad you found your way here. I hope someone with more knowledge than I will be along soon to set you on the right path. I remember my very early foray into digital scrapping and the euphoria I felt when I figured out how to do layers. I was using Paint shop pro back then. Good luck, don't give up...digi is so much fun...and heaps less messy than scissors and gluesticks:)

Hi Tracye

There is a bit of a learning curve to any new thing but after a while, you will LOVE digital scrapbooking....You get to reuse items, place an item and then move it/delete it with ease, just pile on the ellies without too much extra cost (lol) and then post all your layouts for us to ohh and awe over!

I personally use PSE version 6 and layers are a bit tricky. my advice would be to make sure the layers pallete is visable so you can see everything and how they are structured. Then start with a paper, add a photo, add a frame, and then add all the elements. Once you add one thing, a new layer is automatically created :). And if you want to put something under the frame layer for instance, just put an element on the page on the top layer, go to the layer pallete and point your mouse over it, click and drag it down till it is under the frame or whatever you want it to be under.

Just start with 3- 5 layers to get the hang of it and pretty soon you will realize that you will get up to 58 layers of more for most layouts lol.

Good luck, do not even stress about it and have fun!!!!!

All of my tutorials are free. Have you found or tried them? I'm always willing to help if you get stuck. Sometimes just having someone nearby to cheer you on helps. Course 1 is here. Lesson 5 is a hand-on, do your first layout tutorial.

I went from PSE 5 to PSE 2018. Wow, what a huge difference. It is a very frustrating journey you have started but so rewarding at the same time as you learn. Michelle Stelling on youtube might be a good place to start. She tends to have a focus on using PSE for digital scrapbooking. Most of her newer videos are using PSE 15 but it looks very similar to the newest version.
Here is a link to one of the videos that might help to get you started but I also recommend watching others. I love learning on you tube!

Best of luck and don't give up!

Hang in there! I switched from PSE 9 to PSE 12 or something and it took a little bit of learning. However, once you get it, it moves a lot faster. Don't get too frustrated. We were all there once!

I am new as well, and I've been learning a lot from the beginner classes from www.scrapaneers.com. Sometimes I can't get it to work and I have to watch the video over and over. I'm usually missing a tiny step somewhere. If you are completely brand new (can't open files, save, etc. and really need some basics then I recommend www.mycorneronline.com. In her older videos her version of elements doesn't match mine (mine is 14) but you can usually figure it out.

I did re-do Lesson 5, the most important one for beginners, in PSE11. That is the latest version I have purchased, especially since I have no income to support getting a newer version any longer and I use the CC (full version) now. You are correct that one can usually figure it out. I teach everyone that the basic tools are all the same in every version, you just have to learn your interface (where the tools are located). Once you learn where the tools are in your version, you begin translating the tutorials without thinking into your version.

Also important is to never ever sit and be frustrated. Ask for help. I and many others are ready to help you.

Thanks for helping others!
