My computer is getting full...

I am interested in everyone's answers to this one, too! I have the same problem on my EHD! I have gone back and looked a little bit through some of my kits and deleted some that I didn't think I would ever use again; either they were freebies that I didn't love or things that I didn't love anymore for whatever reason. I rarely go back and re-use kits, so I have thought maybe I should delete a good portion of them, but I just can't bring myself to do it yet!

I would never intentionally delete any kits, but I lost an EHD that was nearly full, and lost everything on it :cryhard I do have a hard time using older kits too though, and I had so much for so many different stores, that I found myself purchasing kits I already had (rolling eyes), and my memory isn't getting any better, so I'm going to try to be more organized...somehow, lol. Hard drives are fairly inexpensive these days, so when this one gets full, I will just buy another one, because I just wouldn't be able to delete any of them. I'm not on any CT's right now, so i don't accumulate as many as I once did. You are both on CT's so I can imagine you have wayyyy more than you could ever use. What if you were to get another hard drive and put all of your favorites on that one. You could have a working one and a favorite one...
Also when I was an admin at a different store, I used to have a challenge monthly that would require you to use a kit you rarely get a chance to use, or perhaps haven't used yet at all. That would get you to look through your stash and dig up something(s) that you may have forgotten that you had.
That is all I have :)

Maybe we should have a challenge like that here:) Great idea!

I was thinking along these same lines/questions the other day. I was wondering how long have you been scrapping and how many EHD's have you gone through or are currently using? I started scrapping 3 1/2 years ago. I have a 1T that is about as full as it can get and starting to give me troubles. I am in the process of moving stuff on it over and deleting things I don't love as I go. I used to use CrashPlan but don't anymore. What other methods of back up/saving do y'all use? I have all my pictures saved in about three places, internal drive, EHD and online SnapFish so I'm covered with them. I don't like the thought of losing a EHD and having all my scrap stuff gone though!

I have two internal hard drives and two external, and I am running out of space too!

I recently started weeding out my folders, I save by the month. I'm (trying) to keep about 4GB per month then save them to a DVD. I save all my LO's and fav kits and delete the rest. And then, after checking the DVD about 9 times (to make sure it's all really there) I delete the folder from that drive. It's a slow process but they are saved without fear something will die.

Like Oriana, I'm a kit collector and have been around digi for a long time. Although I do occasionally delete some kits that I know I will never use, most I have. I often reuse kits too.

Last year I wrote a tutorial on saving Hard Drive Space. There are screen shots, plus 2 word docs in it.

hoping the linky is correct.

I was thinking the same thing recently!! I have to say, I do go back and use kits again, especially theme kits.
For sure, I do not delete kits from GS designers!!

Don't forget DVD's hold for only around four or five years!

Thanks for the link Michi!

Well, this is what I was told by my son, a computer freak.
I am sure it also has to do how they are stored.

I'm so glad I'm not alone! ;)

I too am a hoarder, I used to be really good about deleting the same number of kits off my hard drive when I put new ones on, but now I've been slacking at that lately, I should get back in the habit. I do go back and use kits again (if I need to, esp themed kits of themes that are hard to come by!) But that happens pretty rarely, usually I just get something new and make it work, sometimes pulling a piece or creating something for it to be part of the "theme"

I am constantly monitoring my disk storage :) I purchase a lot more than I scrap, at least right now. My husband suggested I get a blue ray burner if I am concerned. They hold about 25 GB. I haven't done that yet.

I should just delete everything I downloaded prior to 2012. I only downloaded freebies prior to 2012 and most of them aren't even unzipped. I've never looked at them. They aren't full kits. For many reasons I should just delete them. But I haven't yet.

I'm running out of space too! I lost my EHD and I've been looking in to cloud storage, so I don't have to worry as much. but I do re use my favorite kits, I made sure I grabbed those off of my EHD before it kicked the bucket, all my old MandyMade kits have been used nurmous amounts of times! Graham Like the Cracker too! Gosh I miss there stuff!!! it all really depends on what I'm scrapping but most of the time I'll get inspired by a kit for a layout or I get inspired by a photo and make a kit or look for a new one. I

Rachel... do not trust the cloud too quickly!!!!
I CANNOT stress that strongly enough. When 2 of my internal drives went amuck last August... DH says... no worries, in addition to the multiple EHD's we have CARBONITE-

What a JOKE! Enrolled in 'it' in June 2013. By August they had less than 10% covered...their excuse...I had too much stuff and too many files!!

Followed ALL their suggestions for faster UL and NO!

After many hours on the telephone, I gave up.

I will do it my way....
if you want cloud...have an alternative...just sayin.

I would NEVER delete a kit I paid for. Freebies maybe. I've been doing this a long time, and at this moment my computer has 3 on board HDs, and I have at last count, 6 externals. I do keep my kits by year, by store, by designer. It's easier that way. My biggest pet peeve is when a designer leaves a store and I can't use them on that site any more. I just move them to anyother site, or their own folder.

I am like Oriana. I have been at this for over 9 years and am a hoarder. I feel like this could be an AA meeting...

"Hi, my name is Jen and I am a digi-kit hoarder."

I don't delete much but as I peruse the kits (new or otherwise) the first time I open them, I always go through and throw out anything that just isn't my "style." I delete papers I don't like or won't ever use, same with elements. Maybe that's harsh but there are just some things that I know I will likely never use from a kit or papers with odd color combos that I don't like, etc. It's just my way of keeping only what I like and know I will use. I don't end up deleting much but I do end up throwing a few things. I have also started weeding out my kits I don't like or will ever use much anymore...old stuff from 3-6 years ago unless it's a great themed kit I might want to use again. I know my style has changed over the years and I don't have babies anymore so I don't need a hundred baby kits, I just keep my favorites for those occasions down the road I might need something.

Yes but it depends on a lot of things. I know Blue ray is the best, unless there is something new I haven't heard of yet. I know that DVD's last the least. A second opinion is always best :)

Yup- what Ricki said.

Any data you have can be data gone. Hence save it to more than one place.

my computer got really slow yester day so I decided to look up my computer and see how much space I had, I'm down to 41GB of free space!!! :O so I'm going to really have to so some cleaning out, and maybe invest in something for saving, what I really need to do is start printing more!!!

Oh, yes on printing more...me too.
Please look at my tut link - I think it will help designers not keep the abundance of 'stuff' y'all keep...esp word doc 2.
. happy to clarify / expand more if needed. ;)

There is also- disk clean up, delete temp files and a few others that get the 'dust' out.

When I read DELETE in the first post, my heart skipped a beat--no I don't do that!! :) I do have several externals though--remember--if it's only on ONE hard drive, you are NOT backing it up. You have to have things in TWO places. Hard drives, and externals crash ALL THE TIME!! :) I bought an external for my daughter for Christmas and put all the layouts I made for her family on it--so if something happens to the stuff here, she'll have a copy of them!! I plan to do that for the other kids for this year.
I have a few ct's so I get a lot of kits--and yes, I do go back and use some of the again if I remember!! I can't think of that "d" word at all!! It gives me the shakes!!

Oh no, Michi! You just burst my bubble :( I've been backing up to Backblaze (waiting for my 1.5 million files to be fully backed up-only 150,000 to go!)...thinking that if my 2 EHDs bit the dust, I would have a cloud backup. Now what?!

Sorry Tammy... I do not trust big brother...If if can go away ..it will. Plus I had a horrid experience with Carbonite! Grrr... Even with phone time for a long time.

their final answer was ... We cannot back up stuff like you create.

Now- How is THAT for professional speech???
basically they want a few word docs...and not much more. The whole idea of a psd, a tiff, a raw file ...does them in.
m

Thanks, Michi!
I guess I'm going to have to invest in another EHD. I don't keep any of my scrapbook supplies or photos on my laptop hard drive. I have a 1TB "working EHD" that holds my photos and most current kits and travels with me as well as a 3TB "backup EHD" that holds a backup of my photos, pages, kits-both current and older. These are both almost full.
