I have decided to document our family stories that have become legends. It needs some editing - but here is one of the legends I am planning on doing...
The Shark...
Lynnette has not been in the ocean since September or October of 1974. It is not that she is scared of the ocean, you understand, but rather she sees it as trespassing upon the environment of our beloved, ocean-dwelling wildlife.
It all began in Hawaii. Lynnette was happily anticipating the birth of a baby in November and due to her increasing girth tended to swim in the early evening when tourists had left the beaches. She lived next to the KULA radio station at 830 Ala Moana Blvd and would walk over to the park, through the banyan trees, to enjoy some peace and quiet by herself. It was such an evening that our tale begins.
Magic Island Lagoon is a man-made lagoon with a rock barrier that protects it from incoming waves. Lynnette always thought it would protect the swimmers from various ocean creatures and felt quite safe floating in the calm waters. The bottom of the lagoon also had some rocky areas where the sand was not smooth, so it could be quite tricky navigating to and from the shore into the deeper areas. Not that the deeper areas were that deep; Lynnette could easily reach the bottom, though sometimes on her tippy toes. From time to time, she would sit on the edge and watch the tiny tropical fish swim around in the lava rock formations. It was her favourite place in the world.
On this particular evening, she had floated upright towards the center of the lagoon, bouncing her tippy toes against the sand. As she rested, enjoying the slight bob of the waves, there was a slight bump against her legs and she looked down into the crystal clear water only to see something slide quickly out of her sight. Soon there was another bump and this time, she saw, to her horror, a small hammerhead shark swimming away from her, only to circle and return to bump her legs again and again. Lynnette started the slow, difficult exit to shore, moving nothing but her cupped fingers in a tiny, delicate swimming motion, being sure to not move her legs at all, least the shark perceive them as a tasty treat.
Years later when telling this tale, Lynnette would remember clearly that it was the year Jaws came out and that it took almost an hour to swim to shore. In reality, Jaws came out in December 1975, a full year later and who really knows how long it really took to get to dry land. Perhaps it was ten minutes, perhaps fifteen, perhaps the full hour. The only thing we do know for sure is that there were reports of increased shark sightings in 1974, and one of those sharks had decided to bump her legs in the shallow lagoon where she swam alone.
To this day, Lynnette has never returned to the ocean. Very occasionally, you will see the waves touch the tip of her toes, but no more. It is not that she is afraid, you understand, but she decided, on that long-ago day in Hawaii, to respect the oceanic home of watery wild life, such as jelly fish, crabs and .... yes, baby hammerhead sharks.

OMG LYNNIE! What a great story!!!!
I want to do at least 31 pages. It's a big goal considering I'm in the process of scanning every paper layout and photo I have. We had a flood in our house in 2018 and then the passing of my daughter. I've learned that paper and albums aren't the best or at least the only way you should keep your memories. I'm so happy with my process.
My goals for each month this year are to get at least 10 challenges done. More pages or challenges are a bonus! And I'd love to have a page nominated for Baker's Best once a month! So far I'm 3 for 3!!
Wonderful goals everyone! I have an added goal of wanting to scan (a few at a time) some of my mom's old pics so I can scrap with them. No one ever looks at her paper scrapbook albums but if I can and create digi pages, the family are more likely to look at them. I don't have a time frame for this, I'll just do a few at a time, here and there. I know survivor is coming soon so don't want to overload myself with projects right now.
BTW....Lynnie....what an awesome story. When I come across some of my old cruise photos I'll have to tell my shark story too.
