Making Ants March

I only know the directions for PC computers so if you have a Mac the modifier keys will be Command or Option. I don't know which of those is the same as Alt or Ctrl on a PC. I found the tutorial but couldn't understand the selecting the edges
bit myself- couldn't find a menu command. So I will tell you how I do it.

1. With your text or merged alpha layer selected in the layer palette. Press the CTRL (CMD on a Mac) key and click on the little icon on the layer. This should give you the marching ants. This is the standard keyboard shortcut to make a selection the exact size of whatever you are trying to select.

Now you should be able to follow the rest of the tutorial. But since PSE has a variety of ways to complete a task, I will share the steps for how I do this type of skill.

1. CTRL+ Click on the icon of the layer you want to select (the layer actually doesn't have to be selected or highlighted first but as a new learner I recommend you make that the active layer) to get your marching ants.

2. CTRL+Click on the New Layer icon (the first icon at the top of the layers palette- it looks like a square with the corner folded over) This should create a new empty layer beneath your alpha-text.

3. Go to Menu Commands Edit> Stroke (Outline) Selection A dialog box will pop up.

4. Set the Stroke Width you want -( try the 20 pixel Jan used for Modifying the selection.) and set the Location to Center - (Changing the stroke color isn't important for what I am explaining) press OK.

5. If the stroke isn't the size you would like press CTRL(CMD)+Z to UNDO and try a different stroke size.

6. Once you have the size of stroke outline set, bring in your glitter paper so that it is above the stroke layer you just created but below your Alpha/Text layer.

7. Press CTRL (CMD)+G to clip/group the glitter paper with the stroke layer. Once it is clipped/grouped the glitter layer should have the same shape as the stroke layer you created.

8. If the glitter sparkle pattern is too large or small for the look you want you can resize it by pressing the letter V for the Move tool or CTRL+T to get the transform tool. Drag by any corner handle to get the size/appearance you like.

Hope this helps!

I did it!!! You such an amazing teacher! I always get things on the first time because you write everything out so well. I really appreciate your help. Did I mention how amazing you are :):):) Here's the new siggy. I think I could have went bigger with the glitter looking at it now, but that's ok, I'll know next time. Have a wonderful weekend!
