Let's talk about intentional photography

I really want some studio-like photos of my children. But there is literally no where in my house where I can take some fun photos with them with a decent background. Either the light is not right, or there is too much clutter, or whatever. Has anyone set up a corner of their house to take pictures?

I always did it in the garage with a white or grey sheet in the background. Hung it between two ladders at the front of the garage with the door wide open. Enough light gets in but no shadows. :)

If you have a garage this works. Otherwise, I once did the same in my living room with all the windows open wide during the bright time of day (3pm) I hung the sheet on the TV and sat them in front of the sheet. :)

Not right now, because we are living with my parents while my husband is deployed. But in the past, I've always placed those removable 3M hooks on the wall (higher than a doorframe) and then got two $2-3 camps from Home Depot. Every once in a while I go to JoAnn's or another fabric store and buy thick quality material. When I am ready for a photoshoot, I get those clamps and clamp the fabric and hang the fabric on the 3M hooks that are on the wall for awesome photo shoots with my children.

Like I said, I haven't done it here at my parents house, but I do plan on doing it when we move next year because it's easier than building a PVC Pipe frame for your backdrop. That and the material folds up to a small tote with the clamps that can be placed in a closet!

My cousin uses the PVC piping frame for her photography business too. I'm too lazy to build one, hence the draping over things. LOL...;)

We recently put in wood flooring and painted the walls a lovely taupe color. We have a corner where the lighting is perfect and we can rearrange to make the photos perfect! On Father's Day we did photos of the grandkids there for my dad.

I can't get decent photos in our current apartment to save my life. The walls are a creamy yellow and it screws with my color balance every time. I will never live in a place without white walls again, LOL.

When we took pictures for my best friend's wedding, she hung up a white sheet and that made a nice backdrop.

It might not be practical now, but something to think about if your family travels, you can get great family photos in hotel rooms! They're clean and uncluttered, and the lighting is good if they have big windows.

I've never had a really good camera, so all of my photos are candids. Looking back, it's one of the things I wish I had done differently. I wish I had figured out a way to do some more "formal" portraits.
