How do you start a layout?

Hey,

I normally start with the photos and add them to the layout and after that the papers and then the elements... But I have heart from some friends that they finish a page and add the photos at the end....

How do you work??? Or depends it on the kit, the layout?

Hugs

I scrap a photo so I always start with that :). Then I add papers and then all the rest :).

most the time I have a kit I want to use and I match a photo to that :)

Great question, Claudi! I do the same as Dagi. I usually have a kit I want to scrap with, so I select photos that will match with the kit, then depending on the number of photos, I select a template, papers and then embellishments.

I do it like this too.... kit is most time the first thing I select :-)

Depends. If it's a CT layout, then I'll start with the template or kit, depending on who it's for. If I'm really lucky, the kit and template will release the same day!

If there's no CT involved, then I'll start with my photos. I usually know exactly what template and kit I'll be using when I take the pictures. But sometimes I take longer to find the right template than it does to actually do the layout!

I have done it both ways. I usually look at my photos and then find a kit and depending on the number of photos, I pick the template. Sometimes the kit will determine the photos and sometimes the photo will determine the kit.

I can ditto both Donna and Dogie.
Sometimes I have photos I know I want to scrap and how.
Sometimes I see a kit and I have the photo or I need to take one to make it work.

As as long as it is meaningful to me- I'm happy.

Most of my layouts are CT layouts, so I start with a kit and/or template and find photos that will go with them. I tend to get paralyzed when I have to pick a kit for something that isn't CT!

I start with the picture and then choose the kit that goes well with the colors or theme of the page. I can't just start with a kit. The picture is what inspires me.

More often than not I have a kit I want to use and search for photos that work with it. Photo placement is first for me though it might change a bit as I go... some elements next and testing of papers and then title and journaling and finally I would probably add a bunch more elements to balance it all out.

Most times I have a kit too I want to use or need to use and then I search photos for it.... As having not so much photos this is often the most difficult part of creating layout...
And then the creating fun begins... I really love to see a layout "growing" and as I scrap often in the evening I sometimes need to stop because I need to go sleeping and after sleep I do the finishing touch in the morning with my first coffee

Great question!

I am a chronological scrapper. So I typically sort out all of my photos for that months into folders - usually labeled 4thofJuly-16 then I can glance at the month and see how many LOs I need to make and if they are a one pager or a two pager. then when I finish the folder is labeled done_4thofJuly-16. So I can clearly see what needs to be scrapped and what is already done.

So I go and grab a folder, then I select a template (or make one! ;) tee hee). Then if I don't already have a kit in mind, I'll go searching for the perfect kit - usually first look in the store here, and if nothing is triggering motivation for me (rarely happens here, I almost always find SOMETHING ;) tee hee) then I look in my stash.

From there it depends, sometimes I "decorate" the template first, usually papers first, then ellies, then alpha. But sometimes I add the photos in first, then "decorate".

How's that for consistency!? ha ha!

Cool Trina, you seamed to be so organised!!! And you are always inspired by the photos??? I have photos I would love to scrap but I have no inspiration for them!! I really adore chronological scrapper like I adore all scrapper who do such long term projects like 52 / 365......

I like to think I'm pretty organized! ha ha - but sometimes that isn't so! Sometimes the photos aren't all that inspiring, just ones I want to scrap - like I do a "miscellaneous" page of random photos from that month. Then I just look for a fun kit that I haven't used and use that!

I also do p365 - I think this is my 6th year? But I've fallen behind in that as well! :p ha ha!

Ditto with what most say... I start with a kit then look for a photo. As for the layout, I'll start with the photo, find a template, paper, then elements. Title then journaling..

I'm a freak. I start with the photos, then I write the journaling/captions, then I usually make a rough template for my page. (If I'm going to do it as a blog freebie I create the full template first with the specific photos and journaling in mind.) By the time I have the photos and journaling placed I usually have a good idea what I'm looking for in kits or may even know which kit or kits from my stash or that I've put on my wishlist I want to use. Laying out the photos first is probably why I don't use frames often.

I would love to get back to chronological scrapping! I have photos back to 2001 (somehow I scrapped 2002 without doing 2001!). I was so paralyzed when I was a paper scrapper that I ended up not getting much of anything done. It's time to change that and get these kids' albums done before another gets married! LOL! My next is only 15...but time sure flies!

I start with kits, and pick photos after, if I have a set of photos I need to scrap then I will sometimes find a kit to use first, however, I design my page with papers, and design before I add the photos to it, then I place them and add elements.

Yeah, I knew going in that if I didn't do chronological I'd never go back and scrap some of them! So now I plow through even the "not so fun" pages and keep going. Very rarely do I pull something "current" and scrap - only if theres a super cute new kit that I just NEED to have ;) ha ha! But I try my best to avoid that. I'm about a year behind currently, so that is sort of fun to finally be scrapping the right time of year w/ the current releases!!

That's a really good point, Trina! I do that...never scrap the "not so fun" stuff. I think I'm going to make some changes after Survivor is over. LOL! Definitely not before!
