Thought we could have thread of our own to chat about all things Potter or Rowling!

I am reading a fantastic fan fic called Professor Potter. It's really well written and continues from the day after the final battle.

let's dish HP!!!

Who's your fave character and why?

Me, it's Sirius. I just loved that he was so protective of Harry and not even his father. I loved how he wanted Harry to succeed. I loved Gary Oldman's portrayal of him. He was the perfect Sirius Black.
 
That's interesting. I never really connected with Sirius, but I know a lot of people love him.

I remember when he died my sister was just devastated and cried and it just didn't bother me that much for some reason. Now when she killed off Hedwig.... oh I can't even talk about that....

I always liked Molly Weasley, even more after the last book when she went after Bellatrix. She was strong and loving and the kind of mom I think we all wished we had.
 
I think Molly and I would be BFFs. She's cool and I love her in the books.

In the fan fic I'm reading, she is kick ass. She fights for Harry and pulls him out of depression. It's wonderful to see these authors keep the story going. I've read some really horrible fanfic, but there are some amazing ones out there too.

what's your favourite book of the series?

Mine in order:

Goblet of Fire
Deathly Hallows
Sorcerers Stone
Order of the Phoenix
Chamber of Secrets
Prisoner of Azkaban

The movies are the same except switch Dealthy Hallows and Goblet of fire. I loved the movie Deathly Hallows. It was so well done.
 
Goblet of Fire is my favorite too, then Chamber of Secrets. We watched Deathly Hallows again last month and it just blew me away how good they were. I don't think I've seen them since they were in the theater. I think I'm hesitant to reread the series because I think I'd be doing a mental death count in my head. I don't want to see them as young happy kids, knowing what happens to so many of them.
My sister is super into fanfic, she loves the fun crossover ones, like HP and Sherlock or whatever. (I'm not sure if that's real, I might have made it up in my brain)

Omg- Hedwig died after we had to put down my ferret Allie. She was only two years old and her little body was riddled with tumors. I lost it. I was sooooo upset. I cried and cried.


And this is pretty bad, but I used to paper scrap and was on two peas in a bucket all the time. They had a message forum and gallery to share layouts and what not. Well when Snape killed dumbeldore in the books some jerk posted as their forum post Snape killed dumbeldore as the subject of their forum post. It was terrible. I couldn't believe someone would do that! And then people kept commenting on the post what a jerk they were which kept pulling it back to the front of the forum... No beuno... So I found out what happened without even reading the book first.


I think my favorite character is Dobby. He was so loyal and brave.


And of course I absolutely detested Dolores Umbridge. I have never had a book character make me so angry ever. Pure evil she was.
 
I started the HP series quite a bit after it came out...I think it was around when Goblet of Fire was released, so I started at the beginning and read through to Goblet. Then when each book was released, I re-read all of the ones before it {just to be sure I was ready}. I cried when Cedric died, sobbed when Sirius & Dumbledore died and lost it when Dobby & Snape died! LOL! I'm a big cry baby.
I should get the series out & read it again!
I enjoy the movies, but the books have so much more feeling to them. When I watch the movies, I cry every time...my boys know I'm going to and hand me tissues.
There are so many characters that I love. I would have a hard time picking a favorite...it would be like picking a favorite child! I love Molly Weasly, Professor McGonagall, Professor Lupin, Dobby... Oh my, I'm just going to end up listing everyone! ;)

OH ME TOO! Even in the movie I was loathing her!! The actress that played her was fantastic.

Just goes to show you how wonderfully written JK's characters are for such emotion to come from all of us (and billions of others)

I loved Dobby too. She said she cried writing his death. The other one she cried was Fred. Did you know she was originally going to kill off Arthur but thought that Harry had lost enough father figures in his lifetime so changed her mind. Then she thought Ron but knew that she would be hanged. LOL..so Fred it was. She was even going to kill off Hagrid at one time but she decided he was too important to the storyline to do so.

Interestingly enough, the fanfic I'm reading, Kreacher is still with Harry and Ginny. He's free and Harry pays him 10 galleons a week. :) This is why I love fanfic. It's just amazing that people continue on the story and keep it canon to what Rowling said in interviews afterwards.
 
Oh I didn't know that about Arthur! I would have cried so hard if she'd done that. I think I was such an emotional wreck after the last one that it's the only book I haven't reread.

Have y'all read any of her newer books? I like her mystery series okay, but it has some issues.

You mean as Robert Galbraith? Yes. I've read the first two and am in the midst of reading the latest one. The first two I loved. The latest one is a bit slow at the start but it's picking up.

I read her adult novel too The Cuckoo's Calling. Didn't like it as much as her writing as Galbraith.
