For those who mix and match kits

How do you do it? I see so many great LO's in the gallery where people have used bits and pieces from several different kits and make it look cohesive. I'm such a "one kit only" scrapper (except for buffets, where everything coordinates already). I'd love to hear the process you go through in making your LO's. Do you organize your supplies in a way that makes it easier? Tell me all about it :)

I used to mix/match all the time pre-CT. I would usually look for same themed kits... Like sports, travel, etc. That is probably the easiest. Or I will go for matching colors since most kits have flowers, ribbons. Sometimes I need a specific quote or word art, then I'll search for a kit that has the word art or similar, but it might not match the colors I need. Then I'll pull from other kits.

I am a one kit scrapper in most instances Jennifer so I am no use to you. Occasionally I will need that certain "something" and will search my stash to find it but on the whole, all of my pages are using just the one kit...and since coming to GS, I also use a template most of the time. I hope glee sees this thread, she is amazing how she mixes so many pieces from so many kits. Her credits list is always most impressive:)

Pre CT (about 8 years ago) I used to mix and match but I really don't now. It's not easy enough to make the colors match right.

I only mix now when the kit I'm using doesn't have something I want, like stitching or themed elements. And I make it work by recoloring most of the time. Sometimes I mix kits that don't work at all, but, you know, challenges ... I'll do anything for a challenge. LOL

I used to be the Queen of mixing kits. My top 'mix' was 28 different designers/28 different kits. But that was a long time ago and it was a challenge to see how many you could use. Giggle..it was a fun challenge too. and I recolored nothing!

However, since most of what I post is CT related, I stick with one kit for the most part. I will say I do add, change etc...when it comes times for printing.

Michi, me, too! I think I did that same challenge. I still mix and match with no problem, especially for challenges where you have to use something specific. As a CT, I don't. I think my method is hunt and peck . . . Lol. I know what I am looking for and kind of where in my stash I might find it. Then, I just start opening folders. My program (SBC ) has a tagging function which would help even more if I was better at tagging it as it came in. Then, I could tell it "only show me alphas from Magical Scraps Galore that are blue". Must.tag.more!!! Hahah

Oh Meagan...ME TOO on the MUST TAG MORE!!!! My 'new' tagging is in Bridge with Adobe CC. [I gave up on ACDSee].

ps- going to tag something now!!!

I'm a one-kit scrapper also unless I want something specific. I use Picasa for my kits so I just search for what I want by type of element or by color, etc. I don't have to manually tag a lot of things since most kits have basic tagging on the elements. I just type in "stitching" and quickly scroll through what pops up. I also have a separate folder labeled scrapping essentials which has folders for some things such as "office drawer" (brads, paper clips, staples, etc), ribbons, stitches that were bought in specific packs, alphas bought separate from kits, clip shapes, etc.

:D I have a separate folder called "stuff" in which I keep "go to" bits and pieces.

I never mix-and-matched much, just sometimes for a challenge, but now that I'm on several CTs, I don't find myself doing it at all. The only exception: a template from one designer and a kit from another.

When I mix kits and I do it quite often for my "personal" pages that are non CT related I just look at the colors of my photo I am going to scrap and then I get out my hard drive and type in "yellow flower" or whatever it is I need and then I drag in all the yellow flowers into photo shop and then just pull the ones together that I think will work and look good together and close the rest. Do the same with papers, ribbons and everything else. I haven't done it in awhile but I try to rename my products so they do say "yellow paper, red paper, Red flower, blue flower, etc etc" Makes it a lot easier to find them when you need them. Also I rename anything metal as "metal flower, metal heart etc etc. It works for most key words I use but it takes a really long time to rename everything. I really should get on that again! Thanks for the reminder!

Kim- Do you use a program to rename or just manually do it? For just single items, I just rename, but if I want to rename who batches, I use Bulk Rename Utility

I love to mix and match kits of different themes but from same designers.

I like to use Christmas and Easter for example lol...but only for challenges.

All my kits are organized by store and then inside that store folder is a list of designers. I do mix-n-match sometimes, but it's not my favorite thing to because I find it MUCH easier to create what I'm missing/needing if the kit that I'm using doesn't have it. However, I do it and when I do, I just go through my favorite designer's folder looking for what goes with my layout. If I find something that doesn't match, I recolor it so I can use it.

Meagan I just rename the pieces myself, but I should look into bulk rename utility!

When I started all I did was mix and match. I still mix and match (except where CT work is concerned). I also had all my kits sorted by store > designers and then spent several months sorting by items > flowers > ribbon > buttons > metals > etc. I also sort by theme > sports > fall > halloween > etc. I also delete things I know I will not use. I am not sure this is the best way to do things but it works for me... I think, lol.
