my mom found this in a box of stuff that came from one of my grandmothers homes. Does anyone know what it is?

I saw one at a flea market one time and asked what it was (I couldn't imagine) and was told it was an antique crystal candle snuffer. I have no idea if that is right or not though. It was only $5.00 but I didn't buy it. Strange looking thing isn't it? I guess you extinguish taper candles with it ... maybe like a safety device to make sure its snuffed out?

do u have the apprx. measurements? i have another possible idea but depends on the size
You look so innocent as you say that Jacque, lol. You're thinking fancy rolling pin right?
:hysterical: This is a family friendly site so I'll say no more. :hysterical:

Datta good girl :) So, care to share the very very very family friendly guess?

ok this REALLY depends on size and the way the photo was taken its hard to tell...AND mine is a remake from medieval times...but thought thru the years it could change once glass was invented and people had more money...a BODICE COOLER...and they are AWESOME!

sorry no clue who the credit goes to...very old LO

You are such a renaissance woman Jacque. That glass one looks to be the wrong shape ... it's not conical, and it's breakable. Could be tricky. I think the clay ones are more practical (I can't believe I'm saying that about something so odd, lol). Who knows maybe the first ones were made of bull horns and they kept them in the icebox.

I still say candle snuffer, but bodice cooler is much sexier. :)

LOL they clay ones r very breakable...i broke mine...i actually thought the glass one looked stronger. I got mine thru an SCA event (which is like renaissance to an outsider but we do NOT reenact we live and speak and FIGHT due to history with no scripts and everyone must dress the part) they actually make much more modern ones today...specifically for hot flashes. it was just a thought lol. the only reason i would think it was NOT a snuffer is it seems it would weigh too much and squish the wax and wick...but i have no clue LOL

that's a great idea alrene...i truly have NO idea what it is...but looks like apprx. the 70's by the cut of the glass. again...i have NO CLUE LMAO!

So sorry......... i didnt get notified people were responding LOL Im a dork. hmmm I dont have the measurements it was at moms house and she sent me the photo. :) but i love the humor cause my thoughts were all over the place lol when she sent it to me... cause in person i dont remember it sparking such thoughts LOL.... I love the idea of the antique roadshow.... and candle snuffer --- must research!

Yeah most people say its a pie crust rolling pin... but i dont see what it would be so ornate. Granted to snuff out a candle you wouldnt need such a pretty thing either LOL

Here are two more photos she sent later in the day. I havent found one candle snuffer that looks even remotely close to this lol. I put in a message to the Antique Roadshow Facebook page. We will see.

Oh dear ... the new pics don't help, lol. I don't think it's a candle snuffer any more. It's probably part of something and the other part is missing or broken, :) Let us know if you find out what it is.

LOL...i'm sure its not that...but was my umm er second thought ;) however as funny as this seems...this actually helps cool the core temperature of the body quite a bit :) and if this is NOT what it is u will learn a lot about them :)

Jill, I'm dying to know what this is. I showed it to my mom and I'm sure you could guess her response.... it's not family friendly! LOL!

interesting thought....its hollow...but not sure if that would matter...i just wanna know what it is now LMAO

i think GS should have a contest for whoever can definitively tell us what this is ;)

i agree.emmm...this is the closet guess. i'd say perfect but we'd need to know if it is the full piece or if its missing a top. but i bet this is it!

OMG i bet sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo -- I was just about to put it up on the antique road show site... that makes A LOT OF sense --- my grand mother LOVED perfume!!!
