Decorating sugar cookies

Yesterday, my future DIL and a friend from work and I decorated sugar cookies yesterday. I made a batch of cookies and my friend made a batch. I got my recipe from pinterest. It was good, but not as good as my friends. I also got the royal icing recipe from pinterest. For our first try....they came out okay. As soon as I get the pics from them, I will post them. Anyway....today I noticed the brown icing bled on the white. I used wilton coloring. Does anyone out there have a recipe for me to try or some tips on decorating? We are going to give it another shot in a couple of weeks. Wish me luck.

I though I answered, but it vanished. I don't make particularly great decorated cookies, they look a bit of a mess when I am done, but they always taste great :) Show us the pics when they are done - I look forward to seeing them.

I can't remember the last time I made sugar cookies but I have a friend that makes really drop dead gorgeous ones that taste like heaven. She charges $1.50 per cookie. Want her number? :):D

Yes Heidi that would be awesome!! Does she have a fb page or email address?

I have been using Cathy Zielske's sugar cookie recipe for two years now. It's the best I've ever followed. She has tons of pictures with her girl making and decorating the cookies. I will be making them again this year, it's a good bonding moment for our family :)

That is awesome!! That is one of the reasons I want to do it. To make memories and just have a good time. Christmas has been hard and I want my kids to have good memories. They are adults now....but still!!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the recipe I am going to try this one it has been a family tradition for years to have a cookie/candy baking day in December so that we have gifts to give neighbors, co-workers, friends it started with my grandma, then me, my mom and my aunt and now it is me, my daughter and my grandkids.

We make butter cookies rather than sugar. The kids so enjoy the decorating part. I love it too. I don't sift the flour. That's my mom's recipe and flour comes pre-sifted now.

Beatrice,
Do they keep their shape when baking. I think I would rather the butter cookie instead.

I wanted to try to make sugar cookies for a long time and after reading the link to Cathy Zieske I just have to give it a try!

I love watching other people making sugar cookies with that perfect flat royal icing. When we make cookies at home, it's quite a mess. The younger boys are all about how much sprinkles can be on a cookie. I don't think we even eat them!

I'm baking mine today so that we can decorate them tomorrow. I've used the recipe on the back of the Wilton cutter box for roll out cookies for years. No chilling required. I also use their frosting recipe. It's not as stiff as royal, but it tastes good.

Good luck! I use a recipe that I've had for almost 25 years that calls for unsalted butter, and it calls for vanilla extract, as well as a few drops of lemon extract. I do not use royal icing or do any piping. I use a recipe for what I call a spreadable glaze that ends up with a luster-like finish. It's basically powdered sugar, vanilla and a little bit of light corn syrup.
