Creating Beautiful Pages

When you create your beautiful layouts, do you have a set order that you scrap in? I'd love to hear your tips and tricks!!! :)

In all of the years that I've been scrapping, I've very seldom strayed away from the order in which I place items on my pages. I always start with a background paper and work my way "up" the layers … papers, then leaves, then flowers, then photo(s). I may add more flowers and misc elements once I have my photos in place. When I'm in a creative slump I sometimes try to change things up as I am making a layout, but it almost gives me anxiety! LOL!

When I do not use a template or maybe even when I do, I will start with the the photos and then the papers followed by embellishments. I like to have the photos on the page first so I can decide on the right colours for everything else.

I almost always start with photos because I think the photos should be the focus of the page, not piles of embellishments. Next is generally paper and then I will add elements to compliment my photos being sure to leave space for the journaling. Last is journaling and typically finishing up with adding the date of when the photos were taken.

I usually pick my photos first than the kit (unless I'm working with a particular kit for a challenge). I usually place my pictures in the template first than add the papers making sure nothing clashes and keeping a balance of color. Than I add large elements and foliage than flowers. Sometimes I have to change a paper or two if colors clash or the colors of the flower clusters are too close in color to the paper it is on top of. I add themed elements as a small cluster or sprinkled in my clusters.

Most of my pages are for CT work so the kit I'll use is already determined, so I will then choose my photo(s). Then I choose my background layer and add a bit of paper stacking or frames to give structure to my design and then go from there. I almost always have clustering so I start a cluster or two and then I start adding and rearranging paper/elements around my page. Brushes, overlays, ribbon, buttons and string are part of the finishing touches to my page.

Oooh, I'm not in the majority here. I usually start with the kit/template. I generally have a theme, so photos are dumped in a folder easily accessible. I build my page and once I have my paper patterns and layers set I add my photos. Most of my photos are enhanced and colored to match the color scheme. Then add ellies and journal.

Anne-Marie, do you always know exactly the photos you are going to scrap with? Sometimes I do, but other times I really have no clue.

I totally agree that the photos should be the focal point!! I think journaling is so important too - !

Isn't it awesome that as digi-scrappers, we can "try out" different colors, elements, etc without having to start from scratch everytime!! :-)

For me, it depends. If I'm doing my own pages, I start with the photos then match a kit to them. If I am doing CT work, I start with the kit and match photos to it.

Jill, If I am wanting to take part in a challenge that will help determine which photos I would like to use. I do Project Life weekly so the photos I have taken that week determine what goes on those pages.
This year I am trying ( not very successfully ) to create pages about my childhood to eventually have printed into an album. In the past I have had three albums printed about special vacations I have had in this past. One album was about a Cruise I took way back in 1981 and even further back I did an album on my very first trip I took after starting work so I was 17 years old for those pages.

My mother died 8 years ago and I am still sorting through her albums and photos - scanning the ones I want to create pages with. It is from these albums that I am finding photos of my childhood.
This is a page that will go into the album about my childhood:

Totally random here, no set plan, complete evolution. I guess, after self analysis, the photo comes first most of the time. My trouble is knowing when to stop. I am usually having such a good time, I don't want to "put the LO to bed". Like not wanting a great book to end.

I guess I do have to say after reading other's comments that sometimes I do start with a kit or some other element for inspiration if I am doing a challenge, but when build my layout 99% of the time the photos always go on the page first. I think it would be hard for me to build a page any other way.

I understand not knowing where to stop! LOL! That's a good trait to have I think!

It's funny how we get into a routine!
