The place I recently moved into, the former owner is a Gardner at a local public garden. Soooo there is a lot of plants and flowers that I no nothing about. We have a backyard with everything from ivy, tulips, juniper. The front and side of the house as stuff as well.

Anyone have any basic gardening tips or point me to resources, people you follow etc.

Hubby and I do not have a green thumb. We just want to maintain what is currently here. TIA.

I would advise you to decide on what plants you want to see on your site and read about each of them on the Internet. Junipers and ivy need pruning, tulips need to be dug up periodically and young bulbs need to be planted.

Good tips Nellie. I have a small garden and my best tip for you is to clean and prune all the dead stuff off before the winter season, makes for a cleaner spring so you can just enjoy the beauty.

Our state has a really great site for native plants and general gardening tips that's run by one of the colleges. Try googling your state + garden zone and that can help you know what to do when for each season.

Pruning dry twigs and shoots is a matter of course. But there are a number of plants that, for example, need to be transplanted annually, planting young shoots, rejuvenating the plant itself. There are plants that need active feeding. In general, it is better to study all these subtleties for each plant individually, if there is a desire to get, albeit a small, but lush blooming garden.
