Albuquerque, New Mexico
When I was 10, my 12 yo cousin and I got on a Greyhound bus from Fresno, CA to Sallisaw, Oklahoma (as a parent now, I can't imagine putting my kid on a 3 day bus journey like that! But it was 1980, not now). They took us to the grocery store beforehand and we got to pick out 3 days worth of food. We had 1 small cooler and a grocery bag. We really couldn't take much that would go bad, so we had mostly junk food & juice boxes (don't even ask me to have another Vienna Sausage - how did we eat those!). I mean, what will a 10 yo & a 12 yo pick anyway?
Anywho...after 2 days on the road eating nothing but the junk food from this bag & cooler, I had made a friend of a lady sitting next to us. I chatted with everyone and I helped her with her crossword puzzle. Now, we did not get off the bus at any stops - that was a rule from our parents. We stopped in Albuquerque for a break and she got off the bus and bought us each a foot long chili dog and cold milk. It was the BEST, MOST AMAZING FOOD EVER! I will always remember the kindness of that lady.
