12/27/2015 RQOTD Scrapping hurdles

What do you think you need help with in digi scrapping? Art journaling? Shadowing? How to make clusters? Share and maybe we can give each other tips. Here are my hurdles:
i have no clue where to place bows...weird, I know.
i cannot make a pocket page. It takes me twice as long to do this than a highly clustered page.
i am my worst enemy because I don't hit save until I am done, and then something happens to my PC and poof my page is gone.
what about you? Anything you wish you could do better or more quickly.
 
I struggle with buttons so don't use them. I also struggle with pocket pages but I think because it's just not my style.

I want to work on blending modes and brushes this year.
 
I totally struggle with art journaling- I just don't "get" it! Some things are horribly hard for me to cluster too.
 
I am still fairly new to PSE so everything is pretty new to me...and I get so excited when I figure something out all by myself!

My nemesis is not saving as I go along and have uttered many unladylike epithets:36_11_13: (but, on the flip side, the 2nd lo really comes together very quickly!)

yeah, ah, I have found out that as well. But oddly enough I am also not veery ladylike.

I enjoy art journaling. I find it a kind of do what you want, there are no rules. I started with a challenge once at a site. It was to make a photoless layout. I slowly moved into art journaling. I find it a lot of fun.

bows, I can't work a bow into my clusters. I either tuck it behind a flower, and then only half of it sticks out like a leaf. Which to me defeats the whole purpose of the bow element. And when I try to stick it on too of something, other than let's say a tag, it looks weird.

I think the "no rules" part of art journaling is my hurdle. I need structure, at least when I'm learning something new.

So I totally do my bows like that too. I thought I was doing it awesomely, LOL. I will ignore your bow statements altogether and continue in my ignorant bow tucking ways :)
 
I suck at blending. I'd like to get better at that this year.

An awesome clusterer once told me the secret to her fabulous clusters was repetition. She made a little cluster, then duplicated it a couple of times. Then you rearrange things a bit and vary the sizes and angles a little so it doesn't look all the same. Move things around in the layers palette so all the red flowers aren't on top of every cluster (or whatever) That advice was a great jumping off point for me. I'm by no means an expert clusterer, but maybe that advice can help someone else :)
 
I use GIMP, which I know most don't use, and I would love to learn to use some of the other tools in the tool box.

I'm okay with my cluster use--I use the rule of thirds and duplicate as well--and as far as bows and buttons, I try to think of them as a way to 'tack something down'. I use them in clusters as well to add balance using the rule of thirds, again. I like to stick bows in clusters to accent a favorite flower or other ellie. They look cute in titles, too.

As far as saving, I have gotten in the habit of saving after every few things I add to the page and always after I add a photo and get it resized to fit in a template since deciding exactly what photos I want to use always takes me the longest.

Art journaling really isn't my style. I do love the way some of you are able to produce these types of LOs--like Trace! I just prefer to scrap more traditional pages.

Pocket pages are not my strongest; but I must say, a good template (Connie Prince's and Ponytail Designs make some of my favorite) REALLY, REALLY make a big difference for pocket pages.

It's amazing how much my LOs have improved just from trial and error and doing challenges. Shadows are another thing I'm never sure about. I kind of use them just to make the ellies pop.
 
My scrapping hurdle is that I can't do it fast. It takes me a very long time to make pages. However, on a good note, my scrapping has improved because of it!
 
I think the biggest thing I struggle with is perfectionism! I futz with things and take way too long getting LOs done because maybe one paper is better than the other, or one flower than the other! :D Chelle recently did a short post about it and it really rang true... does it matter if the flower needs to be moved 1/4" over? Nope. I'm working on perfectionism this year.

I don't do art journaling...I think like Jen said, the lack of structure gets me! I see all these fabulous LOs and want mine to look like them, but they just end up looking like a mess. Plus, I'm not very good with blending so that doesn't help.

I've gotten fairly good at pocket pages. When I first started having to do them for CTs, I really struggled. Now, I kind of like them because I can get a lot on a page.
 
UGH! Lydia I totally didn't mean to hit dislike. My thumbs are fat and I'm on my phone! ;)

haha. I don't know about those bows. I look at other pages in the gallery and they are so carefreely placed upon another element looking still exactly like a bow, but like they belong...that is the look I want. But I sadly cannot achieve it. I just shove it under something else so that it is partially exposed not being used to its full bow potential.

All my shadows are actions. There is my secret. I don't have time to mess with them. Click shadow complete. :shh

I am molasses slow. I think I fiddle too much with what should I put here or there. and switch my papers like twenty times.

I am a one page per one hour or more girl. Not very productive or efficient.

Thank you Lynn for the lovely compliment! :)

I love the freedom of the artsy pages. I've only been doing them for about a year maybe now and to me, it equates just throwing paint up on the wall and seeing where it lands. :) I Love just playing without the structure but it does take a bit of structure to get them the way you want!!! I find I'm doing more art journal type layout than traditional with photos these days.

I love taking a "traditional" type kit and making it into a photoless artsy page. It's a challenge but so much fun!

I also am a fast scrapper. I can whip a page out in 30 minutes if I have to (and have on occasion!!!)

One thing I'm finding most is that I prefer to do my layouts with my own design and not reaching for a template each and every time. I do like a good template, don't get me wrong, but I love the design process too.

I think the bows are perfect in your siggy right now.

I think of bows and buttons as fasteners. Unless it's a curly ribbon bow, then maybe that is partly sticking out.

Me, too, Danica!! I wouldn't be anywhere without my shadow actions! My hour (or more) pages would turn into daylong projects without them.
 
An hour?? In my dreams. More like 2 hours. It takes me forever... particularly if it is a double page lo (which I love because they fit in my book better), but the downside is more time.

It took me a whole week to complete my first PSE layout. I kept quitting. Now, I'm so glad that I stuck it out.
