Soda or pop- or soda pop! We do call it by its name too. When I lived in Texas I was scolded by a friend. "It's not soda, it's Coke. If it's Sprite, it's Coke. If it's lemonade, it's Coke. Always Coke!"

That happened to me at CHA in Atlanta in 2005. I asked for ginger ale. Waiter said "ok coke" I said, "no, not coke, I'm allergic to caffeine, I want ginger ale" Waiter says again "Yes ma'am...coke" I was getting frustrated and my friends said "OH she is from Canada, they don't call ALL soda "Coke"

I was like "HUH?" If everything is called coke, how do they know what to give each person! LOL"

Here it's pop. And coke is coke, ginger ale is ginger ale and root beer is root beer! :D

Soda - but growing up in MN they called in Pop, but even then I usually called it Soda.

I'm from Montana too, where they all call it pop. I grew up in Idaho where it was interchangeable :)

Another Californian...it's soda :) If you said "pop" here nobody would know what you were talking about!

That is so funny. I have lived in GA my entire life and people call it soda or the name of the actual drink. I have been told that us southerners are known for calling it all Coke. I've just never heard it that way. :-)

A typical conversation before going into a convenience store around here:

Person 1: Want me to grab you a coke while I'm in there?
Person 2: Yes, please!
Person 1: Sure! What kind?
Person 2: Mountain Dew/Pepsi/Sprite/Coke/etc.

Soda, pop = just sound strange! :P

I call it a Pop, which isn't normal for the area that I live in. Everyone thinks I am a Northerner because of that but I was born and raised in the south. My parents are from the north though.

In my house if we are using the generic term we say pop. But usually we call it by it's brand name. In this area I hear it called both pop and soda.

Pop here in the midwest. After 5 years in California I had finally started calling it soda at least half the time (so as to not be gently mocked) then we moved back here and I went back to pop :)

Both, I grew up calling it pop but after moving to a few other states, I have found myself calling it soda as well.

I'm from the south- 'coke' is usually it. Sometimes it's soda. But I don't drink any of it anymore.

Soda is something different here, it's just water with gas. It was strange for me for months, that ladies on diet said, I can't drink soda, too much calories. :D
We call them by their brand name, and there is a generic term also (of course in Hungarian :) )
