Any experience with Etsy and/or scrapping for others?

I am looking into setting up a shop. I really want to attempt to get a scrapbooking for others business going, especially focusing on wedding albums. Any advice to share? I need more income, and I've been contemplating this idea for awhile. I already have a 2nd job but would love to be able to give that up and work on my own time, doing something that I love.

Thanks for any suggestions/insights.

I've thought of doing the same thing, Lori, but have too many things on my plate right now. I'm looking forward to hearing from anyone who has done this!

I've some experience with S4H/S4O and would be willing to answer questions you may have. It was an enjoyable way to make some pocket money, but I've not found it to be a quick way to make lots of cash with a few rare exceptions. If you put a reasonable dollar amount on your hourly wages, you quickly price yourself out of many people's price range. The problems are similar to discussions I've read where photographers discuss their work/value/price points.

Copyrights for both photos and graphic designs are important issues you'll need to familiarize yourself with. You (generalized you to everyone interested in doing this ) will need to set aside time to read all TOUs carefully to make sure you understand.

I think what Linda says about "price range" is so true, with any craft!
Good luck though!!! Do report on your progress (and ditto about copyright! not enough people take it seriously).

Totally agree about the price/value comment, Linda. I used to sell stained glass at local craft fairs. I think anytime that you create hand made anything, it's impossible to really earn what your time is worth. You have to just do it because you love it and look at it as a way to get some extra cash. I have a full time teaching job, and I work a second job right now at a local gym. I would really just love to be able to get rid of that second job and instead do something that I really enjoy. Of course, if I do scrapping as a job, I might not end up liking it as much... LOL.

Thank you for the copyright reminder as well. I do look at that carefully with the kits that I have purchased. I agree that a lot of people probably don't. :(

Ha ha - about doing it as a job and then not liking it as much!

My husband and I have talked about this a lot over the years, it'd be fun...but MAYBE when I'm all caught up on MY scrapbooking I can look into it! ha ha! (I'm about 1.25 years behind, so making up ground! but still a long way to go!)

And I'm sure you already know, but any kits you get as CT kits can NOT be used to generate $$, you'd have to purchase them (and make sure they allow S4O, etc!) But just wanted to throw it out there!

I did know that about the CT kits Trina, but thanks for the reminder. :)

As for the being caught up on my scrapbooking, I'm much farther behind than you are! I should probably consider that hehe!

In my experience, people want more for less. By the time you put in the hours and purchase the kits to make pages/albums/framed art etc, it wasn't worth it in the end. Nobody wants to pay 100.00 for an album, never mind that it took you 50 hours to make and it's over 20 pages!!

People want to have them done but they don't want to pay for it! (mind you I was doing it with paper scrapping stuff, not digital, but the costs were WAY more than the reward for me)

I did two albums before I decided to stop. It just wasn't bringing in the money and I was spending more on the items than what anyone was willing to pay.

I have thought about advertising digital scrap classes, but then everyone would need to bring a laptop and we'd have to get them all to purchase the same kit etc. Not sure how that would work out.

Ha ha - I figured you did, but needed to say it regardless - part of my Job! Don't want Ginger to fire me ;) tee hee!

Trace, I'd love to be in one of your digiclasses!

Lori, you sound like a very busy lady whose a lot of fun to be around!

You ladies make me wish we could do a scrap meet like the paper scrappers. It'd be great to sit and chat with so many of the GS ladies here at the site.
