Non-PS/PSE how to punch a hole.

Does anyone from the old DSS site, remember this? It was taught in one of the LAD's they used to have over there, and I'm the kinda person who has to do stuff a few times before it sticks in my brain and I has just learned this, right before they closed down and now i can't remember how/what work around I used.

like if you wanted to punch a hole in a tag or other element, anyone have any thoughts?
