Welcome to my first time of hosting a Challenge here at Ginger Scraps. This is a member hosted challenge so it is not eligible for the reward system. Ginger has given me personal permission to host this challenge. You can read the rules about member's hosting challenges HERE
If you take part in this challenge you will share your artwork in your "Member Gallery" as there is no special gallery for this challenge. You must not share your link in your Cookie Jar post as this is not part of the rewards system.
Challenge rules still apply in that you need to use at least 50% of Ginger Scraps products on your artwork.

Now unto what this challenge is all about:

What is Art Journaling…. Simply put Art Journaling is a visual diary.

It’s record keeping combined with creativity. It’s a place to record your thoughts, memories, emotions through images, art and words.

To do this with digital scrapbooking software you mostly do not add deep shadows. You want to achieve the look of a flat piece of artwork. Maybe a slight shadow on paint blobs or a word strip or small tag. Stitching would require a small shadow. Now this is art and open to the creators interpretation as I have seen some Art Journaling on which the artist has used a large flower with deep shadowing.

For my challenge I will be looking for pages that DO NOT include photos of children, animals or other subjects unless the photo illustrates a thought, dream, emotion etc. Then it looks best to blend the photo into the background or use masks to help keep the page looking flat and arty.

Each month for the challenge I will give you just ONE word and you can use the word singularly or plural. You might like to find a quote, Bible verse, line from a song - any of these that have meaning to you personally. You definitely can use as much journaling to help share your thoughts, emotions, dreams as you wish to. Also to just use the word alone somewhere on your page with journaling would be good.
If at any time you feel lead to create something too private and emotional to share you can type out your words and then cover it up or blend it into the background. One time I did this and covered my words with paint strokes.

For this month the word is BIRD

Here is my page and I will share an illustration of steps I took to show how you do not need to purchase any special kits for Art Journaling. Have a good look through your stash and you might be surprised with just what you can use. Some of the designers call items – splatters, graffiti, scribbles, splash, stamps or grunge with all these being handy for this style of artwork. Also the brushes in your software are handy for creating arty backgrounds. With my page in the gallery is all the credits for what I used with links to the store.

Now here is how I worked with the different embellishments I have used:
( I know realise I used a different paint splatter in this and not the one I used on my page
but this one below is from the same kit)

I look forward to seeing what you all create for this and you are welcome to create in whatever size you want. Even an ATC can be a fun little piece of Art Journaling.

Alright... so this is my first ever try at art journaling so I hope I am headed in the right direction.

I realize I didn’t include the topic word. The original quote I had picked out had bird in it and then I switched the quote and didn’t even realize that meant I wasn’t following directions. Oops! I’m still happy with how it turned out, I tried one last night and wasn’t thinking I would be successful at all. It was frustrating how hard it is to go so far away from your normal habits! Probably a good practice for me!

Art journaling is so way outside the box for me but I so appreciate the excellent mini-tutorial example with elements and the impact of different blending modes - very cool looking technique that can be applied to creating our own stamps and graffiti grunges. Thank you Anne Marie!

Well here it is...my first go at Art Journalling. I have spent hours trying this, many versions, many discards. Reasonably happy but room for lots of improvement. I did enjoy the process though. Thanks Anne-Marie.

This was out of my comfort zone for sure! I like to highlight fonts and pictures, so not doing so was hard. Hopefully I followed the rules and have everything included that I'm supposed to.
