SHUTTERFLY

I have been experimenting with Shutterfly photo book online editing platform. My LOs are all 8x8 @300ppi. When I drag some of them into the book I get an alert to say "Photo has low resolution and may not print well". Any thoughts from those who have used Shutterfly?

Here is what I found online :)

Check the File Export Settings

Even though your layout is 8x8" at 300ppi, double-check that:
  • You're exporting the file as a flattened JPEG (preferred for photo book printing).
  • Resolution is definitely set to 300ppi (not 72ppi) during export.
  • File size is reasonably large (usually 2MB+ for an 8x8 300ppi JPEG).
If you're dragging the layout onto a full-page spread but it’s being interpreted as smaller than the full 8x8 page, Shutterfly might think you're trying to enlarge it, triggering the warning.

Try placing the image manually, resizing it to exactly fill the 8x8 page area without cropping or zooming in.

Sometimes their system misreads DPI if the file’s metadata is stripped or misconfigured. You could try:
  • Opening the file in a photo editor (like Photoshop or Affinity Photo).
  • Checking that it's set to 300ppi in the Image Size or Document Info.
  • Re-saving the file and re-uploading.

Try a Test Print or Upload

Try uploading a layout that gave you a warning and:
  • Order a single print or preview with zoom in Shutterfly.
  • Or use a layout that doesn’t trigger the warning and compare export settings.

Community Insight (from scrapbookers and photographers)

Many Shutterfly users have reported false positives from this alert, especially when uploading perfectly fine 300ppi layouts. If your export settings are correct, the actual printed result is usually fine.

Jill, are you uploading as JPEG and I assume in your program you are using RGB and not CMYK for colour?
Are you uploading the layouts to your account in Shutterfly before adding to a book?

Another question...... is Shutterfly an Australian company as I thought by their website it was not ?

@A_M Thanks for the input Anne-Marie. Yes to the first two questions. Don't know about the next one. At the moment I am experimenting with Snapfish and Shutterfly but havent committed anything yet.

@Jill I have sometimes gotten that message and don't have trouble printing them. A couple of things I do: when I choose the book I choose CUSTOM and not any of the speciality books (vacations, birthdays etc. Once you are in custom you do have the ability to change the placing of the photo (layout). if you click on layout on left hand side it will open a list of different placements, you can fill the whole page, middle, left side....I think there are 30 different settings, and you can change the background of the page (not the layout, but the page.
