png file in template

I have an ignorant question: most templates come with a psd folder, a tif folder and a png folder. How do you use all those png files? I know I can open the psd and tif file with photoshop., but what are those png files for?

Thanks.

The PNG files are mostly for those who cannot use the PSD or TIF. Some scrapbooking programs do not work with those so the artist needs to use the individual PNG layers in their program.

Someone people if there is a special shaped mask in the PNG folder they will keep that and use it on its own on a layout.

Personally to save space on my computer I do not keep the PNG folder or the TIF. The TIFs are usually slightly smaller in file size to the PSD but for some reason my old Photoshop CS6 does not work well with TIFs.
