Mac vs PC

LOL! Yes...I really am going there hehe

I've always had PCs and have been very happy with them. My mom is talking about getting new computers for both of us & she wants to buy Macs.

I've only used a Mac briefly & really struggled trying to figure it out, so it's a little scary to me. I'm more inclined to get an upgraded PC laptop.

Do you use a Mac?
Do you like it?
Did you switch from a PC?
If so, how was the learning curve?

Any opinions either way?

I always have an opinionhehe.

I've used both and several different operating on each. I've never had a problem working on one or the other.
Our computers are PC at home but we also have an iPAD and iPHONE.

Things are just in different places, but it's all good.

I have used both in Photoshop and in scrapping and I will choose the Mac hands down every single time. I used to exclusively be PC, but once I started using a Mac, I can't EVER go back. When I use my Mom's PC, I'm so frustrated I stop using it. The other benefit to a Mac is that you can get Windows (if you have to...LOL) and you can run every PC program and every Mac program natively on the computer. You can't get that anywhere else.

You asked how the learning curve was. I had none. It's simply that things are slightly different. For instance, on a PC you click the X and it closes the window and the program. In the Mac, you have a red, yellow, and green circle. Red closes the WINDOW. You still have to close the program. It's on the left side of the window. PC's are on the right side of the window. Stuff like that.

Oh, - and PC's have an ALT key - Macs use the option key.

I love my MAC!

Do you use a Mac? Yes, since 2010. I bought it originally to be used for Scrapbooking when CM was releasing their sbcStudio software for MAC. Well, we all know how that worked out.

Do you like it? See above! lol Love it!

Did you switch from a PC? I bought my MacBook Pro early in 2010. I've since upgraded to a 1T HD and 8GB RAM.

If so, how was the learning curve? Not bad at all. My youngest daughter still lived at home at the time, and she already had a MAC, so if I had a question, she was there to answer it.

Any opinions either way? It's true what they say, you can never go back! I tried! 2 years ago, I won the grand prize in a month long scrapbooking contest - a 17 inch PC laptop. It was beautiful, but I could not figure out Windows 8. I tried and tried. I'd download things and couldn't find them. (MAC has Finder and that's where you find things)

I love that my MBP and my iPhone are synced together. When I take photos on my phone, they are automatically uploaded to iPhoto when I open my computer and there is a wi-fi signal.

I started in the computer world with TV graphics and worked with Comodore Amiga back in the tech stone age. hehe That's my graphics background that eventually lead to digiscrapping.

My first home computer was a Mac. I had a couple Power Macs and 2 iMacs; I ran Photoshop 3 and 5, then Photoshop CS on the last iMac. I switched to PC when I went back to school to add a networking certificate to my degree as all of my classes were windows server classes. I used Photoshop Elements on the PC but still used the Mac for a lot of my scrapping. I got Photoshop CS5 deeply discounted for a graphics class I took with it. (Seriously, I saved $600 AND got 3 credits for it!) Now I have the monthly subscription Photoshop CC, currently 2015 release and I love Photoshop that way.

The coolest thing about Photoshop CC? It won't cost me a dime to put the software on my next computer, which will be a Mac. My PC has a nasty virus called Windows 8.1 and I can't get rid of it. The virus even updates itself! :)

Truth is I loved my Macs, IMO much more user friendly, and I've growled about PCs when I had to use them for work and only slightly less at home because I have a little more control. But the bottom line is that I have to have Photoshop and MS Word to keep me happy. (And I'm happiest when my most used software is on a Mac!)

One of my favorite subjects :)

I was a PC-er for many years. Then I got a Mac.
My opinion, PC's are okay as long as they do the job. But what a difference! First of all because the main users are PC, so getting a bad bug or virus and the like are less likely to happen. But lately the bad stuff's are also getting into Mac's so safety is important no matter what computer.

Do you use a Mac? YES

Do you like it? YES

Did you switch from a PC? Yep

If so, how was the learning curve?
I felt like I was in a different world, took me a while to understand but once I got it, no way would I go back to a PC, with all due respect of course. I was told forget everything I knew from a PC and that was so true! Everything is different.

Macs are strong monsters and can hold up heavy grafic works. Or games. In our case, Mac's are perfect for what we do.
Fast and strong.
As long as maintaining a Mac properly, things should always be smooth. [same goes for PC's].
And soon there is a new Mac upgrade which I hear is awesome!
I would say Mac's. For what I do, promoting, I can have four windows open, with 100+ tabs and my Mac doesn't skip a beat hehe
And CS5 works like a gem!

I'll chime in with the pro-Mac camp. I married a Mac guy and he converted me. I really hope I never have to go back to PC's. Being visually impaired, there was maybe a bigger learning curve for me than most, but once you get used to everything being on the other side of the screen, you should be okay.

Everyone has addressed the power and general awesomeness, but I have to say that for me as a scrapper, the photo applications on a Mac are so great. I've used iPhoto and Aperture, but haven't touched the newest Photos app yet. Things are so smooth and pretty and intuitive, finding the photos you want to scrap is SO much easier on a Mac. That's one of my very favorite part of the whole ecosystem.

Other than iTunes (which I hate with a deep fiery passion) I love everything about my Mac. I'm on my 3rd or 4th Mac laptop, and they've all been great.

Edit- I would highly suggest that if you have one nearby, check out the Apple Store and play around with them there. I probably made ten trips to the Apple store before I finally decided to take the plunge and switch. They have a lot of free classes for new users you can sign up for too.

Thank you all for your opinions & insights! It seems Mac lovers are very passionate because no PC lovers have chimed in! LOL! hehe

I just looked at Macs & wow! They are expensive!! $2000 for a 15" laptop! I may be staying with a PC :(

You get what you pay for. We just bought my stepson a (way too expensive) gaming PC a couple weeks ago and we're STILL working to get rid of all the garbage that comes installed on there. His first four year old laptop is virtually unusable. On the other hand, we're still using my eight year old Mac laptop as a media server. It still works, we just can't update the OS anymore. It's a very big initial investment, but they do last a long time. Try checking out an apple certified refurbished machine. We always buy refurbs.

So funny, Jen, because when I was telling my youngest about the cost, his reply was, "You can buy a good Alienware gaming PC for that!" hehe I'll look into refurb. I don't think mom looked at the prices before offering to buy Macs...Hehe! She was a bit taken aback at the price.

Tammy, they're expensive, but they last and last. You won't be replacing it in 2 years. I've had mine for 6 years. My husband has had 4 PC's in those same 6 years.

You ou really do get more bang for your buck. I still use a laptop from 2001! They outlast PCs and have less repair bills.

I use a PC, however I learned the ropes while having a Mac & I'd rather have a mac. Swing with it, you will learn the ropes: L.O.L.!!

It sounds like if we could get Macs to come down in price, the world would go Mac! LOL :)

It's the old argument - Volkswagen Bug vrs a Ferrari - you absolutely get what you pay for. The money is worth it for a better product.

Well, we ended up getting PCs... we just couldn't afford to get Macs at this point. They came last night & I've been working on setting everything up.
It has much more RAM than the older one I was using and so far, so good!!
Thank you all for your input. At some point I may switch over to a Mac...when I can save up for it!

That's great Tammy!! I need to get a new computer, will have to be a PC, can't afford Mac right now...lol.
What did you end up getting?

Em, I got a Dell. It was only $449 on sale from Costco online - 8GB Ram, 1TB hard drive, 15.6" touchscreen, Intel i5 processor. It's really nice so far! Super fast! And, it was delivered in 2 days from when I ordered it!! Let me know if you want the link :)

touchscreen...cool! But will you also use a mouse when making layouts?
that's a great deal for a touch screen!

The important thing is that you get what works for you and your budget. I can't do Windows...so I am saving for a new Mac.

Em, yes, I'm mostly using the mouse...I haven't figured out what I will use the touchscreen for...maybe when the mouse isn't being as detailed as I want? I didn't really buy it for the touchscreen - that was just an added bonus :)

Susan, Windows 8 sucks big time! I totally hate it! I'm really hoping 10 (which comes out on the 29th) will be more like 7. ...we'll see!

The last time I tolerated windows was Win 98 - believe it or not! LOLOLOL

When we were poor students and newlyweds my husband used our savings for a computer to bring home a Mac. I was so upset! School started the next day and I didn't know how to use a MAC! I laugh now to think about how mad I was... once you go Mac you never go back :). It only took a day or so of playing with it to figure it out. And 13 years later we have never had another PC!
