Hard Drive Horror Stories

I've had two prior incidents of crashing hard drives and lost some very precious family photos in that dreaded scenario. Retrieving can be extremely costly, and who is ever ready to spend money like that? Because I have lost my firstborn daughter at age 37 unexpectedly, the loss of family photos was particularly painful and personal. I finally got to the point (because I collect so much) that I had my own monster desktop custom built for superior graphics and superior storage capabilities. My screen is a 23" 4K Samsung TV (again for superior graphics). My desktop has a solid state hard drive and a 1 T, 2 T, and 4 T hard drives.

With all that said, I used to use Carbonite as my online backup service, but I did some research and found that Backblaze better serves me. I agree with another comment in this thread, it's the best $5/month I can spend. Think about how we used to all pay for magazine subscriptions annually just for fun things to read. Paying for a continual backup service online gives way more peace of mind to scrappers and digital artists like us. (And digital hoarders such as myself!) And, thank goodness, I don't have to justify my expenses to my DH who has his own hobbies and expenses he enjoys.

Another convenience I own is a Western Digital 4 TB "cloud" backup attached to my desktop which is continually making a mirror image of everything on my system.

I have several forms of external hard drives that I eventually move things off to when my desktop system gets too full.

Lastly, I subscribe to Dropbox Pro annually, and I absolutely love how it works. We do so much photography these days with our updated upgraded cell phones. Once the app is put on each mobile device and synchronized, it will automatically upload any and all photos taken on any device. These are easily viewed, retrieved, shared, etc. They are always available, never to be lost.

I will not suffer another loss, and I (and my creativity) are totally worth it!

I am so sorry for the devastating loss of your daughter and your photos.

You are right about the magazines as well, often times they piled up unread. To preserve those memories in those photos is priceless, as are you AND your talent.

@emscraps.....have you initiated your plan yet?

I lost a son 22 years ago when he was 23 and another 18 months ago when he was 41. Every image of them is so precious. My heart goes out to you.

And yes, you and your (fabulous) creativity are TOTALLY worth it.

Yes we have a triple back up system where the 3 drives are mirror copies in my hubbys computer but it crashed one day without warning & the triple back up drives for some reason didn't record so we lost a whole heap of the kids baby photos. He now has the triple back up going as well as amazon & google photo storage. Otherwise I am terrible at backing up

I haven't experienced an EHD or computer crash but I lost an ehd. A 2 terabyte ehd with only 70gig available. So imagine my emotions when I lost my photos and kits in a single ehd. We went back home in February but I never had the chance to look for it. My daughter and I travelled to the US in 2016 and I forgot my ehd on top of my computer. My mil went to our house and rearrange our things against my will so now nobody can't find the ehd anymore. I feel lots of emotions whenever I think the missing ehd. The photos I have for when I gave birth to my daugter are there... :(

Bumping this - more hard drive horror stories reported and there are good recommendations in this thread.

I do, and I decided to stay with them. I tried Carbonite and discovered that they only keep deleted files for 30 days and then they are gone for good. I've had things that I've deleted accidentally and discovered it a long time later. After comparing for me the cost was worth it. I forgot to mention my "art gallery" of scrapping supplies, don't want to risk those either. This is going to sound crazy I know, but they are based in Minnesota and somehow it gives me comfort knowing my files are being taken care of here. While I've only had to use customer service twice, they are also based in Minnesota and I had a terrific experience.

Well, you sold me on it. I signed up today and my computer is in the process of backing up. Makes me happy.

I haven't had any crashes, but back in 2013 my husband ETS'ed from the Army. We were living in Germany at the time, and when the movers packed up all our stuff to move us back stateside, they lost my EHD. I was heartbroken, as both our kids were born in Germany and it had all my pictures of their first years on it.

Right now I have everything once again backed up to an EHD. I also have a Dropbox account and have it on my phone as well as my computer at home and my computer at work. As soon as I'm within wifi range my phone backs up all my pictures automatically to dropbox and therefore both computers. Once a week everything in dropbox gets backed up to the ED.

We've only had one HD bite the dust. It was a main one, too. But we've learned to back up. I have everything automatically syncing to Google (mainly because we all have Android phones, and soon, my account will allow even my family to use the account ;))
I also upload every picture, no matter what, to Flickr. So, double-back-up.
Reminds me I need to back up to the external HD as well.
I used to use CDs, but my laptop doesn't have a CD drive, and that's a USB slot I need :D
