Dinner plans?

We've already celebrated our Canadian Thanksgiving so this is not a celebration for us today. So, dinner as usual....something fast and easy. Ground beef/turkey has been fried up, cheesey rice for hubs is ready to serve and I just need to heat up a bunch of veggies (beans, corn, peppers). I'll steam some cauliflower for me and add butter and cream cheese to it (my low carb version of mashed potatoes). I'm going to bake a pumpkin loaf to snack on later.

That actually sounds yummy Rae.

We had traditional US thanksgiving dinner - turkey, stuffing/dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, yams, brussel sprouts, green bean casserole and Frog Eye salad. Dessert was pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, banana cream pie and chocolate pie.

It was fun to have 3 out of my 4 kids and their spouses here along with my little grandson. My daughter and their 3 kids live in AZ so we don't get to spend holidays with them very often. Maybe next year when we are empty nesters. We played a game, some took naps, some watched a bit of football....... All in all, it was a fabulous day.

Now lets dash through to January before I lose all sanity. :)

We had the traditional US Thanksgiving dinner... turkey, stuffing/dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, sweet potatoes, peas with pearl onions, a green jello salad (its lime green jello, whip-cream, cream cheese, pineapple and walnuts) and pretzel salad (its a delicious casserole with pretzel crust, a layer of cream cheese/whip-cream/sugar and a layer of sliced strawberries in strawberry jello.

It was so nice that everyone was able to come for dinner this year! With a police detective and a NICU nurse in the family, we never know who will be working or home. And my parents were home this year too! They are avid travelers, they have an RV and drive all across the country about 50% of the year, however they missed a few holidays last year, while on the road, and my mom hated it! So I don't think they will be missing any more.

My daughter and my mom cooked everything for the dinner this year and it was all delicious!!
My sister and I were responsible for appetizers and desserts, we have a full day of snacks and playing games, then dinner, then some people (usually all the men) play poker and the rest of us watch the Westminster Dog Show and visit.

Sounds wonderful, Ginger :)

We had Thanksgiving at my son's for the first time. They have a new home and were delighted to host it. It is the first year we have not hosted for at least 25, maybe 30 years. The intent was that I would do nothing (at least mine was!). I forwarded the recipes, etc. but THEN:

My daughter got really sick (emergency room sick!) and I had to pick her up from Northern California last Sunday.
My daughter in law had to work (she is a nurse)
I ended up buying most of the groceries, except for the turkey and the pies.

Thursday, Karen was feeling a little better. She and Steven called to ask how to cook everything. When I said I had sent the recipes, she said "Yes, but we would have to READ those and the turkey has TWO PAGES of stuff to read!"

So I told them to pull out the bad with the neck and gizzards and she said "Well, it is still frozen!"

Yes, it was quite the adventure.

Fortunately, I had peeled and chopped most things Wednesday night. We transported it all to Steven and Nessa's and cooked up a storm. The turkey was part way frozen, and ended up taking a little bit longer to cook. The bag inside was not plastic and we used an electric roaster, so nothing melted and we couldn't stuff it, but that was relatively minor.

Well, except that the insta-pots blew the circuit in the kitchen, so we had to string extension cords all over the place :) It was a story to scrap, that's for sure!!

At the end of the day, Nessa had to work extra hours, so the delay in the turkey worked in her favour. She was able to be there for the Thanksgiving meal.

And it was the tastiest turkey we have ever had!!

We had:

Turkey
Mashed potatoes
Gravy
Roast Potatoes
Mashed Carrots and Root Veggies
Gulliver's Sweet Corn
Corn on the Cob

Pecan Pie
Pumpkin Pie

It was wonderful.

Oh - and one of our traditions is that we have a clear table cloth over the top of the linen table cloth. Under the clear cloth, we put family pictures of us all as children, of our grandparents, great grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. ALl the people the kids need to get to know. Our family history :) So, this year, in honour of Vanessa, since it was her new home we were blessing with our THanksgiving, we added her parents, grandparents and great grandparents to the mix! We included her mother's side of the family - all twelve children! We put that by Steven's plate, since he has a terrible time remembering who is who :)

Nessa was THRILLED.

I have been thinking of creating a table cloth with their family trees ironed on in the center and the pictures all over it. That way they don't have to do the pictures every year. I go back and forth. I think doing the tree in the center would be lovely. One for each of them. Anyway, it won't happen this Christmas, I don't think. Maybe their wedding anniversary in April.
