Crashed!

Most of us have probably gone through this one time or another, but today my hard drive crashed. Then, I realized my EHD also quit working. Heartsick and sad (and a little angry). I back up everything @ Backblaze, but the hassles or restoring it will be a huge deal - and then there's not knowing if I should get the hard drive replaced or just get a new PC - the warranty has been expired for 11 days on the PC!! 11 days!! Grrrrr!!

If I were to get a new desktop - I'd be glad to hear recommendations! Thanks in advance!

I don't have recommendations because I only have a laptop, but I so feel your pain! I had mine crash the day after the warranty expired before. I wanted to cry!! :/ Good luck with your restoration!

So sorry for your loss. But BackBlaze will restore what you have. I've had to restore mine through them.

I can't recommend a desktop since I only have a MacBook Pro laptop. I like to take it with me everywhere I go.

I had to replace my desktop just a month ago, and I went with the Dell Intel Pentium Core i7, and it's SO FAST! I'm loving it! It wasn't cheap, but I'm on this thing many hours each day, so power and speed are important to me.

Avoid Windows 8 if at all possible. Hate it with the fire of a thousand suns!

So sorry you're having to do this under these circumstances.

I feel your pain! I'm currently using my old Windows XP. I set it back to a factory restore and have downloaded a few kits from my Backblaze backup, but I can't do much until I can afford a new one. I tried to restore the hard drive on my Windows 7 Acer computer, it worked once, but a few months later, after I had downloaded everything from backblaze, it quite again and I wasn't able to restore it.
I'm hoping to be able to get a new computer soon, too. Why exactly is Windows 8 hated so much? What other options are there?? I haven't bought a computer in about 7 years, and I've never owned a laptop. I'll be following on here for suggestions, too. Specific brand names you recommend?? Or purchase from a certain store?? I love digi scrapping, but I honestly don't know anything about computers ;)

I have a laptop, and what I did was I saved the monitor from my previous desktop since it was large, and now I just attach my laptop to the monitor and WAH LAH! I have a big screen and still the portability of my laptop, too.

The computer doctor is coming to my house tomorrow - I hope he will have a hard drive to pop into my computer - after doing some checking, I think I will keep what I have - HP Pavilion - quad core processor - core i7 ... it really was quite fast - and as long as it will stay that way I'm good with it.
As for my EHD - I hooked it up again yesterday, just for grins - and nearly fell over when all of my files showed up!! YEA! I don't know what happened Saturday night ... but - I'm so very thankful the files are there. I didn't really want to go through the hassles of a restore, though am grateful it's there just in case!!

As for Windows 8 - our neighbors bought a new PC and hated Windows 8 - so much so, that they returned the PC and had their old one updated.

Yay Jill for the EHD. Get'em copied one other place [another ehd for example], as I had one that would pop in and out.

Crossing fingers for you today.

As for types/brands of computers, most are really good. Get one with the amount of RAM and space you want to store your stuff.
My computer was built for me. I have an SSD -C drive plus 2 separate 1T each internal drives. Plus 2 EHD [one of which isn't working often again]. All windows computers clog down over time because of little artifacts and left over bits that really never clear out.....[it's been like that forever].
DH's new home computer has windows 8. He hated it at first, but it doesn't bother me at all. to me, some things are just in different places.

Other option....buy a mac. I would love to have one, but DH is a PC guy..........

I'm actually starting to hyperventilate thinking about my EHDs crashing - I have one for photos and another for digi kits - but they are only very sketchily backed-up. Better bump that task higher on my to-do list. Yikes! SO glad that your EHD was working fine the next time you checked it. Good luck with your computer doc.

I would definitely go with a computer with and I7 and maybe look into a computer that is made more for gaming. I don't game but that means your graphics card can support lots of use with programs such as ps and pse.

There is (was for me) a big learning curve to become comfortable with Win 8 interface. It's "built" for touchscreen type interaction, but it doesn't flow well with nontouch screen devices (my laptop). The tiles cascading interface is annoying. I fumbled for months with the swipe feature to pull up the shutdown menu.
It was poorly designed and slowed me down, not something I want when I'm trying to get a task finished quickly.
Windows issued a shell to give Win8 a start icon in the bottom left corner of your screen and basically make it more like past OS. But updates and patches for the shell frequently cause more problems. After an update I had multiple problems, like the internet connection was constantly having to be reset. Or blank screen and had to completely reboot and lost programs and apps. It's been one thing after another and to me Windows 8 feels like an obstacle to be overcome, not a tool to help me achieve my goals.

I'm worried that when we go to buy a new desktop; the only thing available will be Windows 8; I DO NOT want a touch screen.

I use win 8 on Dh's newer computer. It's ok, not touch screen, although I'd be ok with touch...more like the iPAD.

Jill- how is your computer...mine is not back yet.

I think you're smarter than me and will be proficient with the new computer very quickly with practice.
Our dd "needs" a new laptop but we're holding out for the next Windows OS.

Ack- I''m sorry Michi - :(!!

I ended up having a different hard drive installed - and it is actually quite fast now - not so much "bloatware" is what I was told!

Good luck with your Michi!!!

I just checked Backblaze, since everything has to be re-backed up - 26 days and counting!! LOL!
