And still lose weight? I am trying to cut down carbs without cutting them out completely. Will that totally derail me?

You don't have to do strict keto. There are other low carb options. I lost the most weight on keto but continued to lose weight and now maintain on my own version of low(ish) carb with some days higher fats and other days higher carbs. I generally give my body a rest, doing a (dirty) 10 hour fast overnight and into the morning(I drink coffee with cream during the morning). I don't usually have more than 20 or 30 carbs/meal but occasionally I splurge and eat a high carb day.
I never eat pasta and very seldom wheat or beans but will have an occasional burger with a wheat bun if no GF bun is available. I stay away from white sugar except for an occasional treat. I eat a lot of veggies, moderate meat and healthy fats.
You should check out Trim Healthy Mama or Paleo. They allow more carbs than keto does.
When you do eat carbs, have brown rice instead of white. Whole wheat instead of white. Sweet potato instead of white. Low carb tortillas. Quinoa, Old Fashioned Oats, beans. Eat fruit in smaller quantities, but remember that berries are fairly low carb anyways. I was about to say "look into Trim Healthy Mama" and then I went back and read what Rae said! I follow it sporadically but do really well with weight loss when I am eating on plan. I don't think it's a good idea to completely give up all carbs because I believe our bodies need some balance, but there are definitely much healthier versions of a lot of things! And, who wants to give up bread when there are good low carb alternatives! (Pepperidge Farm's Whole Grain Sprouted Grain is an amazing option for store bought bread if you don't want to try making your own with sprouted wheat.)
