AI in digital scrapbooking

Just curious… what do y’all think about the use of AI (artificial intelligence) in digital design?
-love
-hate
-indifferent
-what the heck is it?!
I’m not really sure how I feel about it yet… Let’s talk!

I think, like any tool, it could be very beneficial. However, I see there's a lot of grey area when it comes to copyright and the "using" of other images. I think we could all continue to use more training on this evolving technology.

I agree with Shana. I can see how it would be beneficial, but there are a lot of people abusing it too. I have not used it myself and I'm not sure I want to.

In the coloring world the artists that use AI seem not to double check their work for missing lines, extra fingers, extra lines and things like that. It is very frustrating for the colorist.
I'm sure the digital artists have to look for these anomalies in their work too.

I think it has some good qualities but I don't think I would use it in scrapbooking. For the larger group like artists, I think it will be a bigger problem in the future as technology advances.

I have been having WAY too much fun playing with AI!! I understand the ethics concern, the concern for artists livelihood being usurped etc, and that is a worry now and as the technology grows. BUT it is so much fun to submit a photo and overlay it with another image or submit a photo with a prompt, or just a prompt and see what turns up!! Sometimes it is awesome, sometimes it is horrendous, but always FUN. I scrap my efforts, the original and the result, as well so that is a win win I reckon. I remember the excitement of my first effort way back in September 2022 and I have been excited many times since with the results I get. I have discovered a new love of abstract art through the use of AI generators.

I am still undecided as to whether it's a good or a bad thing. But I am interested to learn how it could enhance our scrapbooking. Like most new technology, I will probably give it a try eventually!

Gonna be honest, I like playing with it to create funny photos of my dog. Never thought I'd say this, I'm actually kinda against it. When it comes to creating for me it's just as much as it is about the process as it is the finished product. I can't say that I will use it much in my layouts/creations, etc. I've seen some designers use it and their designs have been fine. I don't have an issue if designers want to use unless their products change to a point that I don't like. I guess at the end of the day, I appreciate the talent it takes for the artistic approach. LOL .

With that being said, I'm also doing more hybrid these days. a lot of it is digital designs printed, but I do mix in my mixed media, stamps, etc from my crafting stash.

If you look at some of the kits for sale now, you will see that they specifically say that a percentage is created by AI. I don't remember which designers, other than the one below, but I have seen it on more than one. The output is obviously gorgeous and it was asking AI to create something unique, not from an existing picture, but from a description. I have tried it and got some lovely flowers, but it is not without a lot of effort and cleanup. I think that a talented designer could use it to help create faster and with unique items. We will have to see where it goes. I am still not sure how I feel. I love these flowers, absolutely love them, but I was surprised when I saw the disclaimer.

For example "These elements are created and/or altered with the use of AI technology (50% or more)."

I hadn't noticed the disclaimers about AI on kits but was aware that it's being used. I've noticed different designers at different stores that are obviously using it. There are some very pretty results but there is also a lot of similarity between them. Is originality going to disappear?

I used to be able to recognize designers by the uniqueness of their collections. I feel we might be losing some of that.

I use AI sometimes to create my simulated photos for a layout and I think that is fine. I didn't realize it was in such wide use for designers. I've only ever used the Night Cafe Creative AI site, so I don't know much about the others, more research is needed. Yesterday I was writing something and wanted to shorten it, so I submitted it to an AI engine & requested to have it rewritten in a shorter version conveying the same info in the letter, it did a fantastic job & I tweaked it a bit, but was overall happy with the result. I was laughing with my daughter, who is 19 and said; 'it's funny, I always say thank you to the AI engine & show my appreciation for their skills' she's like; "...totally mom, you ALWAYS have to be nice to AI, because it's inevitable that AI will control the world some day and you don't want to get on their bad side!" OMG! Was NOT expecting that response, it is a bit scary when you think about it.

I love the AI features in Photoshop, especially if a photo needs to be expanded so that the background is large enough to cover a photo mask, for example. I've played with some of the neural filters that are AI based, such as smoothing out the grain in a low-light photo. Sometimes, AI really misses the mark and it's created some very interesting and comical images. This week, I attended a conference where we discussed AI. The presenter showed us AI generated images from last fall, and then the images using the same prompts that were done this spring. It was amazing how much AI has evolved in just a couple of months and how much better his example images were!

Following this thread with interest...have to say I am not overly impressed with those examples you showed Lynnie but I havent seen them used in LOs yet. Ive not played with AI for composing descriptions etc yet, so far only played with my own photos.

I have mixed feelings about AI and scrapbooking. I think it can be beneficial when you are writing things so can see where it would be a huge help for designers or others who want to write creative posts for their blogs or websites, it might even help us in coming up with a more creative way to write our journaling on our pages. I can also see how it might help designers come up with additional designs for their kits.
However, for those of us who are creating scrapbook pages I am not for the use of AI for several reasons.
-I think it takes away our ability to create something on our own.
-I DO NOT understand the point of using AI generated photos for layouts. To me creating layouts is all about memory keeping, taking MY photos, using papers and elements to highlight those photos and add the journaling to preserve those memories. I have tons of photos so when I have time to create a page I am going to focus on MY memory keeping not using some ransom photo. For my purpose that goes completely against the point of scrabooking.
On the other hand if your things is more in creating art and not memory keeping then it makes sense to use AI for a layout photo.

I think in general we need to be informed when AI has been used. I hate seeing so many photos on social media and not knowing if they are "real" or not. I love to see good photography and these days it is hard to know if the spectacular photo you are seeing has been captured by a photographer or created on someone's computer.

I don't like AI b/c I can't tell if something is real or fake. These days so many images are out there and they look pretty but who knows if it's really. I feel AI has become click bate

Super interesting thread! I enjoyed reading everyone's posts and opinions. I think AI will dramatically impact all things creative (and non-creative), eventually. Kind of like manufacturing assembly lines and robots. Creators will be out of jobs because authors will ask AI to make a book cover, graphic designers will be bypassed for the trendiest advertisements, interior decorators will turn to AI for that impact piece rather than art galleries, and, yes, someone with zero ability to hand-draw anything will suddenly be cranking out scrapbook embellishments and papers. Prices will go down for "original" art and many creators won't be able to make a living anymore. As individuals, just playing around, I think it is a ton of fun. Long term, I'm a bit of a pessimist on this issue. Sorry! :36_1_44:

AI is not for me. I won't go so far as to say I'll not try it because maybe one day I will but as it stands today I'm not a fan. It is funny seeing the horrible pictures and writings AI is currently producing. I hope it's just a fad for those wanting a short cut or aren't creative. My brother is a big fan though. Each to their own.
