There's been so much great stuff coming out in middle grade fiction in the last couple years. Here are some of my favorites:
Firefly Summer by Morgan Matson - About a girl who goes to spend a summer with her mother's family that she has never met and discovers clues that lead her on a scavenger hunt to learn more about the mother she never knew. Adorable, charming and full of heart
The Blackbird Girls by Anne Blankman - about two girls living in Pripyat, Ukraine whose fathers work at the Chernobyl nuclear plant. Although one girl is Jewish and the two did not get along in school, they end up evacuated together when disaster strikes the plant and their families. Wonderful look at a historical event we don't see much of in children's fiction, and deals with so many other issues as well.
The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman by Gennifer Choldenko - After Hank's grandmother dies, his undependable mother skips town, leaving him (at eleven years old) to try to care for himself and his baby sister. They seek out a stranger listed as an emergency contact and try to stay together and out of foster care by keeping a lot of secrets. With 1 in 4 children in America living in a home where an adult has a substance abuse problem, we desperately need more stories that accurately represent these kids' stories and the foster care system.
Hilo by Judd Winnick - a graphic novel series perfect for elementary age boys, but don't let that deter you. The humor is suprisingly non-toilet-y, and as a non-graphic-novel person, I still fell in love with everything about this series. Hilo is an alien boy who crash lands on earth and isn't sure how he got there or even really who he is. His new friends DJ and Gina are there to help him adjust to life on earth and unravel the mysteries surrounding him. The more the first arc of this series went on, the better it got.
