Man I should have written down dates with these, but I wrote this right after the Columbine shooting. I was in high school and remember watching it on tv in class. so it was probably 1999 or 2000. I was filled with so much dread for the future. This was the answer to my prayer that night.


Is There Hope?

There is hope I tell them. There is none they say.
There is love I tell them. Only active hormones they say.
There is peace I tell them. No, but there is pain.
Somewhere drugs are being sold,
Bomb threats are being told.
People are dying,
Children are crying,
Conspirators are buying,
Families are prying apart.
The world is sighing,
There is no hope!
I care I tell them.
They laugh and mock,
No one cares.

An hour of tears, I slide to my bedside.
I call out to the one up above.
Dear father, Is there hope?
A weary smile appears.
Somewhere a young man is shot,
Evil lessons are taught.
People are dying,
Children are crying,
Conspirators are buying,
Families are prying apart.
The world is sighing that
There is no hope!
Now do you care? He asks. I care! I wailed.
He smiled and nodded.
Somewhere a family kneels together in prayer,
Another child calls out, "God I know you are there".
There is love,
There is Joy,
There is virtue,
There is peace,
There is prayer.
Now, he asked again slowly, Do you care?
Through my tears I smiled, Yes I do care.
Don't you see? he asked now with a tear in his eye.
This is why we can cope.
You are my child,
You are hope.

I stand in the dark my discouragement broke.
I tell them all, there is hope.
